Pairing: Yato/Hiyori Theme: first date

Yato seemed awfully happy to be helping Hiyori with her groceries, but as long as he did what she wanted, she didn't have anything to complain about.

Hearing the cart rolling behind her, bouncing a bit on the uneven parts of the ground, a hand reached out to make sure Yato didn't push it into her. Eyes scanned the shelves and saw what she needed on the top shelf, frowning as the list was pocketed.

"I've got it!"

But before she could even be on her toes, Yato's body was against hers and Hiyori gave a small 'huh?' as she found herself pushed to the shelf, overwhelmed by Yato's smell as he brought down the crackers her father liked. He pulled back too soon for her liking and she cleared her throat, hands smoothing her coat.

"What else?"

Yato seemed to be floating along, so deliriously happy by grocery shopping. Every plastic bag was twirled and knotted closed, every bag of rice placed into the cart, even nodding to pay when she said that if he wanted beer he'd have to pay for everything. Eyes narrowed but she pulled him to the bakery where she found the cake Yukine seemed to like the best, putting it in carefully. "Mm... that should be it."

"Okay!"

"...You realize this costs a lot, right?"

"Yeah!"

"...And that you'd basically have to restart your shrine fund!"

"Uh-huh!"

Staring incredulously, Hiyori sighed and pulled out her purse, taking out enough bills and pressing them to Yato's hand. "And after this, I have letters to mail, the pharmacy to stop by, and videos to return."

"All right!"

"What's the matter with you?!"

Her sudden snap broke Yato out of his happy daze and he stared at her, head tilting as fingers were stilled curled around the handle of the cart. "...Hah? You get mad when I don't help you with your groceries and now you do? Women really never change..."

"It's weird! I'm mad because you're being weird!" she huffed and shook the cart. "You're not supposed to enjoy errands! You're--!"

"But this is a date!" he argued and Hiyori found her breath stilling, staring at him. "Usually you make me and Yukine come out with you but you only asked me! That makes this a date, right?"

"..."

"..."

"...You think this is a date?"

"Yeah! ...Isn't it?"

Staring, Hiyori wondered just what kind of dates Yato had been on and stepped around the cart. Slender fingers tangled in his hair as she pulled him down a bit to kiss him right next to the jars of jams, lips lingering on his for several moments longer than necessary and pulled back with a small blush and smiled.

"...Guess it is."

How did you learn to read and understand Japanese?

Starting about a year before I went to live in Japan for a few years, I spent a couple of weeks on hiragana and katakana (aka “kana”) and then began kanji at home while doing beginner-level classes for grammar/vocabulary and speaking practice. Living there helped reinforce a lot of what I learned.

In the end though, being a terminal introvert, I’ve always done best with drilling stuff from books/written materials (including such illustrious learning aids as product packaging or restaurant menus), and downloadable or online learning games for drilling vocab/kanji. Watching anime and Japanese movies has continued to help with listening comprehension (as did the recorded voices they have in public places like on the train). Eventually, a lot of manga aren’t too bad to read for practice, as long as you’ve got your basic kana down and you’re starting to get a grasp of the grammar.

(From what I’ve seen, for extroverts, the best thing is probably to get out there and mix it up with people who speak fluent Japanese. If not in Japan, then at a Japanese cultural centre if you live near one, or perhaps online.)

Now that xxxHolic will return in February and in the last previous chapter it was revealed that Doumeki was dead, do you think that now in coming up chapters Doumeki will appear in Watanuki's dream like Haruka-san is doing?

It is a posibility, but I really fear some plot twist where Watanuki is actually caugh in a time cyrcle and Haruka was actually the first Doumeki he had met, but then he forgot, and it all became a mess we won't be able to understant and mess up our heads like Tsubasa.

Let my fears aside and let me reply to your question. I am so-so about it. At first I thought it would be most likely that Doumeki would start appearing in his dreams like Haruka. I still think it's not impossible (neither would I be too upset with it...?). Although I don't know how it would turn out. Haruka said things to Watanuki that he needed to know, Doumeki was beside him and probably had said most of the things he had to. Maybe it would be late now.

Another posibility (very much CLAMP like) would be to have Doumeki reincarnated. After all his great great grandson looks too much like him. And we have seen such things happen in Wish and Kobato. But xxxholic isn't the same style... So again I don't know how much likely this is.

Going back to my fears: Another posibility that scares me (I am sorry for those who ship Watanuki x Yuuko out there! But I don't ship it so I am sorry, alright?) is that once Yuuko is back, we will learn something like... That Watanuki is actually Clow Reed's reincarnation or something, which would possibly mean that his destined one would probably be Yuuko (after all he did chose her, since he left everything to wait for her).

I am both excited and really stressed with the comeback of xxxholic, I must admit.

No. Don’t expect it until in 6 months…so like in June. That’s when the movie comes out in DVD.

Wow there, it just hit the theathres in Japan, do you really think they would be available with subs? You’ll have to wait a couple of months.
