Okay Deltarune Undertale people I need you to chime in on something for me.
What exactly is fun values? Purely mechanically speaking like how does it work?
I always hear it thrown around but I've never grasped it. Is it just RNG?
Because as far I understand certain things only happen at certain fun values. Like the Gaster followers are tied to fun values right? Trying to grasp how this all works and it it's even possible to see these things on a first play through.
Muffet and her spiders
I don't know who ate the pixels XD
One thing I sure like about Toby Fox's games is how he don't need or relies on disturbing imagery, jumpscares or gore to create discomfort and fear on the player. All that happens is a change in atmosphere and the certainty that somethin that shouldn't be happenin is happenin.
On the genocide route in undertale, the only times we see blood or jumpscares are on the very end of these routes (sans fight and Chara scene respectively). Everythin else is you, all alone, with a slowed down version of incomplete flowey theme and the weight of your actions. The changes in text n dialogue that imply the presence of Chara and the sheer horror about the fact that you are killing all these people by choice and it's all deliberate to make you uncomfortable.
And then there is deltarune with the weird route (specifically chapter 2 only because I haven't finished seein chapter 4 yet, HOLD ON!!!) where, in my opinion, everythin is worse! The game gives you no indication that this route exists, and the more you indulge in it, the more everythin gets scary. Noelle starts to dissociate, the music gets weird, the city gets empty, the pitch black screens when you force Noelle to do somethin she don't want to, like the thorn ring or the lazer puzzle, everything and everyone getting frozen, the pure SILENCE (!!!!!) right after you kill berdly and most important of all: how all of these and all the other aspects of the route are made to seem like this route was never supposed to be in the game! It all looks like you is literally breaking the game and it makes you feel evil, uncomfortable and scared for it.
I don't know if these elements count as horror, but if they did HOOO BOY, Toby nailed it and I'm eatin this shit up!!
Mettaton WIP in which I think it's gonna look good I think I'll post it tomorrow yet I still have no idea how to shade latex
Low-key bad doodles I did at school except pick Addison and mettaton I actually did good on those drawings though the hand in pink Addison turned out a bit wonky. Also I've only been drawing at school so that's why I haven't been posting :/
So, it's undertales 10th anniversary, huh? That's genuinely mad, how has it already been ten years? Since it's been out for ten years now, I wanna write a bit about how this game has affected me personally. I'm gonna cut to the chase, Undertale as a game has saved my live. It's changed me in ways I can and cannot explain. It's helped me so much through the years and is a game I feel personally connected with. I first was introduced to under around when it came it by my friends friend in primary school, I was about 7-8 ish. I went home and watch Jacksepticeye play the game and I got really attached. It was one of the first formative fandoms I was in on the internet and it lead to many other of my interests (from the Undertale fandom I met people who got me into creepypastas and gacha, ect) and it taught me a lot. I love Undertale to bits and it's such a comfort game to me. All the characters are relatable, the themes are great, the music is perfect, the story is amazing and it has formed me into the person I am today. It taught me what being gay and trans was (which later I realised, hey, I'm queer too so, thanks Undertale.) I saw myself a lot in Chara and Alphys specifically, both pretty similar and sad reasons, but that brought me a lot of comfort which is still does too this day. Papyrus, Sans, Undyne, Toriel, Ashore, Alphys, Mettaton, hell, even Chara and Friskvthey all made me feel safe and seen. It made me feel less alone as a queer person, less alone in my self loathing. Hell, if the game didn't exist I'd probably be dead by now, I probably wouldn't have gotten out of 2020 alive. During COVID I was considering just not going on, kinda had the feels that had been building up since I was very little reach and boiling point, up until that point I hadn't played Undertale but I wanted too, so I got it for my birthday. I played it once. And then again. And again. And again. I just couldn't stop. The only runs I've ever done are pacifist since I got so attached to the characters, the idea of hurting them made me physically sick. I still go back to this game and it still helps keep a lot of the issues I have at bay. Every time I play this game it gives me the determination I need to keep going and it helps me so much. Undertale has changed me permanently as a person, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
Thank you Undertale, thank you Toby Fox, for saving my life
