so idk how many remember this little disaster, but i’m finally working on the sequel! yes, you will soon find out what happened to elizabeth during the independents war, and why mel and ban are the way they are, i guess.

2019, the year fics are written and followed through, lol

warning: a character gets shot, characters get violent, and while it’s not graphic, there is blood. there is also some gratuitous chinese phrases/words. i can’t really translate atm because i lost some of the translations, but i hope to become better when this hot mess is finally finished.

She didn’t feel the shot, not at first.

There was this moment where her body felt numb, all sounds of the battle in Serenity Valley turning into a drone, and her vision becoming blurry—

“...Liz?”

— except when she turned and saw him. His face was dirty, his uniform of browns and reds and leathers all kinds of messed up, and there was still splashes of blood on his chin from when he’d gone hand to hand with an Alliance soldier. He came out clear, while everything else blurred, and for a moment nothing else mattered. He looked as wonderful as the first time she saw him, hard and worn from battle, the gaze in his eyes like ice but hinting at a glow, even when they’d met as enemies on the battlefield, so long ago (or so it felt).

No, wait. Something is….wrong, she realized, still unable to process what was happening to her body, not even realizing she was tasting her own blood; she could only feel the worry for him, a worry on top of so many others. Meliodas’ face was drained of color. His eyes, like emeralds, like green leaves blooming in spring, were wide and full of something that made her heart thump painfully. She’d never seen him like that before. Like his whole world was destroyed in an instant. She hated it. It was such an awful look on him, so awful, after seeing him smile around her—

And then Elizabeth was falling. It felt like such a slow descent, yet she wasn’t given enough time to process what was happening, or how fast it was happening. She didn’t even understand it, truly, until she felt the ground beneath her, dirt gathering like a cloud around her body. Her head didn’t feel the hit, but Elizabeth still felt a wave of nausea as her vision grew blurry, a ringing sounding through her ears until everything went black.

“…Elizabeth!”

“Oh, shit—”

“Ban, get her medbag!”

“Cap, that’s a lot of blood. Way too much...”

“That’s why you gotta move your gorram ass before we all get shot up!”

“Got it, got it~”

“How ‘bout you suck on this, fucking gòngzei—”

Movement, very subtle, and then hands. Familiar, friendly, like a brother but also more than that.

Eyes, not open. Everything hurting, even speaking.“B-Ban…”

“Shush, Mei-mei. I’ve got you, we both do. Just stay with us, okay? We’re still waiting on our cavalry, y’know! You gotta wait until then, at least.”

“I’m so...so tired.”

“I know, I know, kid. And I hate to ask, but you have to try, okay. Please, try.”

Feels a lot to ask for, compared to the awaiting sleep.

War is tiring. Losing blood and energy is tiring. Living can be just as tiring, even if there’s an after, even if the war ends.

(“I actually want to set up a bar somewhere on the outer planets. Maybe on Whitefall, or Persephone…I was thinking maybe you could join me.”

…

“I promise that I’ll do my best to, that we both leave here alive….And maybe Ban, because we could use a family pet.”)

But not too much, not enough to give up.

“...O-okay. Okay, Ban. Okay...”

When Elizabeth woke up later, she could still hear gunfire and war cries— but it all sounded faint, far away. Her eyes fluttered behind lids for a moment before she dared to open them, her vision blurry before becoming focused.

She was now surrounded by rock and dirt, in somewhere dimly lit by a campfire—a cave, or something like it. It was now dark, the night sky alight with stars, from what she could see from the little opening in the cavern wall just off her periph. It would be beautiful, if people weren’t dying outside.

Blinking some more, Elizabeth was able to process the murmured voices around her.

“Any news?”

“Nothin’ from HQ, Cap. Not yet.”

“What about the other platoons?”

“Barzard and his boys are still holding. Sergeant Reynolds is getting antsy, though.”

“Yeah, well, he can get in the gorram line,” muttered Meliodas, his arms crossed over his chest, his repeater strapped to his back. When he turned toward the window, his green eyes were molten as he growled lowly. “Ta ma de, where’s our humpin’ back up?”

“Somethin’ ‘bout this don’t feel right, Mel,” said Ban, hunched near a radio, his hands clenched. “We should have heard from them by now…”

“Yeah, I know...but you know our orders. We gotta keep hold, give our boys time to bring the fire. Dong-ma?”

“....Wǒ míngbái, Captain.”

Meliodas clapped a hand on Ban’s shoulder, and the two men shared a look before leaning their foreheads against each other, a gesture that was brotherly but also meant so much more. Now that she was sitting up on her elbows, the cushion under her clearly a stretcher, Elizabeth could see how morose Ban looked, his face smudged with dirt and bruised and his blood red eyes beginning to dull. Meliodas didn’t look any better, being the type to also throw himself into a fight with little thought, but there was still that fury smoldering his eyes, a defiance that refused to be snuffed out. Despite the bandage wrapped around her chest, the tender wound from the gunshot flaring, Elizabeth felt her heart thump, then swell with warmth— and then, with an amused smile, she cleared her throat.

“Wow, Ban,” she rasped, making her cough briefly. “I-I’m not even dead yet, and you’re already trying to steal my man? Bastard.”

Meliodas’ breath hitched, while Ban’s eyes went wide, his mouth twitching. They whipped their heads to throw stares of shock at Elizabeth, expressions that melted into pure relief. Meliodas was the first at her side, dipping his head down to kiss her mouth first — a sensation Elizabeth welcomed with a sigh — and then trailing warm kisses along her cheek. Ban was there next, on her other side, leaning his chin atop Elizabeth’s crown and letting out a deep sigh that nearly became a sob. A pressure building behind her eyes, Elizabeth bent one arm up to grasp Ban’s hand, while leaning into Meliodas’ kisses.

Probably not the best thing to do, all things considered, but things didn’t look too shiny at the moment. They deserved this at least, before leaping from the pan and back into the fire.

[ARTEMIS TAU] Old Turian Colony Discovered, Looted By Humans

via The Acryx Human colonists from Athens system in Artemis Tau have reportedly discovered ruins of a turian colony dating back to the Unification War-era. The ruins were discovered on the distant planet's lone moon during a survey by colonists from Proteus in search of exploitable resources for the isolated region, Proteus representatives wrote in their QEC communique from last week. The colonists took artifacts from the ruins with them to Proteus for further analysis and contacted archeologists outside the cluster for assistance. The age and origins were confirmed when Hierarchy legion historians got their hands on the sent information, revealing the colony to be one of the Unification War-era holdouts that were not integrated with the state. The Hierarchy has sent the Proteus colony an official diplomatic note demanding them to leave the colony ruins in peace and not disturb the dead's rest, in accordance to Hierarchy laws and customs. Elsewhere in the isolated cluster, formerly Council-protected zeioph catacombs on Armeni have been already looted by Therum’s surviving fiefdoms.
