All Mine

Juan Hinojosa Installation at the Schaffer Library at Union College in Schenectady, New York, USA through Fall 2020. Hinojosa finds inspiration from the glamour of fashion magazines, television, and the lifestyle associated with New York City, but he questions our desires to be part of this world. He collects discarded items such as magazines, advertisements, postcards, and toys to arrange and play with, as a painter might arrange colour with paint. Hinojosa then uses these found objects to create what appear to be symmetrical compositions, although because he prefers not to alter or reproduce any of his collage material, they are, in fact, often asymmetrical in both his small collages and larger wall installations. 4.10.23 Extra drawing: Sometimes you see a building that you just have to make a painting of! The Nott Memorial at Union College fits the bill with its "High Victorian" architecture, 16-sided structure (one of the only buildings anywhere like that), and a dome in Schenectady, New York. It's named after a long-time president of Union College Eliphalet Nott who held the position for 62 years (1804-1866). This building is on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places and a U.S. National Historic Landmark.

Undeniably in the worst shape of my life. Undeniably in one of the happiest places of my life. Getting to play 25 years later on the turf that was home to me for 8 seasons through college was amazing. Having my daughters along to see mommy have fun, and kick some underclassman butt, was the icing. Even though the body is softer and slower, and the lungs are wheezier, having photos of myself playing one of my favorite sports, on my favorite home turf, taken by my own offspring... means more than I can say. We didn't have sideline photographers at our games, we didn't even have team pictures in our yearbooks. The only proof we have of our teams are the random photos we took on our old film cameras, and the paperwork filed away somewhere, not online, not google-able. Our accomplishments and failures were not emailed or tweeted, but they remain in my heart like it was yesterday. I am forever trying to psychology my 'why I do what I do' and maybe this is the answer. Because being an athlete was always something that brought me pride, something I worked very hard for, and felt accomplished as a result. It was goals I set and achieved, and felt so darn good about. As a photographer, I have no photos to show my kids what I once was, once upon a time. Until now, thanks to kiddo number one wielding the big camera. It will forever be one of the happiest days, being able to share that with my kids. I know, I'm a sappy old has-been, but I'm a smiling one! Thank you to the team and much younger alumni who put up with my slowness, and here's to #unioncollegefieldhockey for hosting this game every year. Now I have a new goal - to get in shape and come back for more! Decreasing Amounts of Oxygen Lead to Adaptation in Salmon Eggs

According to a study conducted by the University of Southhampton in the UK, Salmon populations have needed to adapt their eggs in order to survive in Rivers where there is a lack of oxygen. The study shows that the membrane of salmon eggs have been evolving in order to survive in places where there are harmful sediments that reduce the amount of oxygen available for the eggs. In addition, it was discovered that in many European rivers, including the Dorchart River, the Tilt River, and both the North and South Tyne Rivers that there has been a decrease in the quality of water due to sediments being washed off the land. Essentially, this change in water quality has forced Salmon populations to change the way in which their eggs are formed so they can better survive in these conditions

In class we learned about the Safe Drinking Water Act and how Water Treatment Facilities are responsible for managing the quality of water of certain bodies of water. As taught, a lot of their problems come from the runoff of sediments and chemicals that catalyze the growth of algae, which in turn eats up the amounts of oxygen in the water, which has a harmful effect on the organisms that live there. As the article stated, this is likely the reason why the Salmon have had a hard time laying eggs, and have had to form an adaptation.

Ultimately, the study shows that the membrane of the salmon eggs have been becoming thinner, so the embryos can get a better flow of oxygen. Many populations are still experiencing this transformation, which has resulted in the loss of many salmon. In conclusion, this study shows how the harmful effects of the actions done by humans can have a negative effect on wildlife, as well as the environment
