Second, on the "trend" of headcannons, do you have any headcannons for Rosie, whether before or after she betrayed Sun and Moon? That whole thing was so, so interesting to me, and I wrote an analysis about it on my Tumblr!

One of my favorite things about working on TSBS has definitely been watching my characters develop alongside the others’ pre-established characters as I am very passionate for this series - again, I’ve been a fan from the start, so getting to work here has been a dream - I’ve become attached to all of my girlies and am very grateful to get have some small influences here or there on their lore/mannerisms, and I wake up every single day excited to record, even if I’m only body acting, because it’s just so much fun to be on these teams!

As for Rosiebell headcanons, I’ll send my updated list for both pre-betrayal and post-betrayal. As always, please regard these headcanons as non-canon unless otherwise specified in future episodes!

Original headcanons:

•She is likely programmed to be very flexible/agile as a DCA (bouncy, energetic, dancy, can climb/ crawl/scale quickly yet...unnervingly quietly) and this also translates into a love for aerial arts, specifically trapeze, and she can juggle

•She can also likely sign some ASL and read braille

• Has a soft spot for "weird" animals like rats/ snakes/frogs/lizards etc., and would likely have a jumping spider in a terrarium on the front desk as a "class" pet in the daycare; may also work with local organizations to bring in some of these animals to teach children how to care for them sometimes

•Her DCA candy would likely be a gel-filled sour grape-flavored gumdrop (still packaged like sundrops/moondrops), and would likely be a creativity booster

• Favorite bands would probably be London After Midnight, Blutengel, VNV Nation, Depeche Mode and Faderhead; she's heavily into gothic music, doesn't really care for other genres too much but won't complain if something else plays

•Doesn't watch TV or consume much media outside of books or music on her own; most, if not all of her knowledge of modern-day media/games likely comes from listening to children infodumping in the daycare, or whatever the Shamrocks show her after-hours; this is also where she learns about popular references that she makes in conversation

•She'd likely be a plushie hoarder, not of the pizzaplex's merch but more of if a child brings her a gift or never returns to reclaim a lost item (a bunny, a little bear etc; she would also keep drawings the children make for her and make little collages in a photo album, since she doesn't have her own area to hang them in out-of-hours

• Her favorite child age population to work with would be babies and toddlers. She finds them absolutely adorable, and takes every chance she gets to dress them up in cute little outfits. She's probably gotten scolded by the other animatronics for being too stubborn to immediately give a baby back to its parent on more than one occasion (just five more minutes, please!)

•When she does find a show she enjoys, she will binge the whole thing all the way through in one sitting, neglecting to charge herself until she finishes

•She's an infodumping vampire - she has to be invited to talk about her interests, and as soon as she gets the green light to do so, will not shut up until her head is empty

Post-betrayal specific headcanons:

•She likely feels extremely bitter about being trapped backstage for so long, especially given that she eventually realized that she was manipulated by Andrew and was going to free Sun and Moon had it not been for Gomer; she likely knows it was too-little-too-late, as she still did choose to go along with Andrew, but probably feels like the consequence outweighs her crime and wishes someone would give her a chance to prove herself

•She obviously missed her first Christmas and her first New Year’s because of her situation; she probably saw her first New Year’s fireworks only as glowing lights on the sides of the backstage curtains/walls, alone in the dark and silence since the ‘Plex was closed and none of the other resident animatronics are happy with her enough to spend that time with her; she also likely had gifts planned for everyone, but they stayed hiding and are collecting dust somewhere as she never got to give them to anyone

•NovaFrost are probably the only two that would acknowledge her regularly besides Monty who only does maintenance checks, and NovaFrost would likely only be interacting with her to readjust her headphones for her if they fell off or make small talk; she would have to wait for them to come by or hope anyone else backstage would take pity on her enough to put her headphones back on

•Rosie is likely afraid of Monty now, as she overheard Monty telling Sun about considering dropping her in another dimension and leaving her on Christmas Eve

•Rosie has likely been thinking a lot during her time of solitude, and likely thinks if she were ever able to return to being a daycare attendant, that she should put her old uniform and makeup back on/start using her “customer service voice” again as she likely doesn’t feel like she deserves to dress how she wants anymore, because she associates her true/comfortable self with being a monster

•She probably really, really misses her daycare kiddos and wishes that she could return to her duties, even if it means staying out of everyone else’s ways from now on; she’d likely become more of a hermit and rarely leave the daycare out of fear of upsetting others

•Though she likely feels hurt about Sun never answering her when she admitted her feelings to him, she probably doesn’t blame him for the rejection and respects him enough to not push him on that, even though it hurts her; Rosie still likely cares for those around her, even if they make her feel sad, and still wants to see Sun happy, even if she’s not apart of that

•Rosie has probably been silently grieving Andrew as well, and has complicated grief; she now knows he was manipulating her, but he was her creator and she was attached to him for quite awhile, and has had to cope with his death while completely isolated; she is probably feeling very lost about it and is trying to suppress her feelings

•Her joints are probably VERY stiff from being stuck in one spot for so long, and if she gets to stand up again, it will likely hurt her a lot at first

•When the other animatronics have settled for the night, Rosie probably hums or softly sings her favorite songs out loud, alone in the dark backstage, as it’s some of the only times she can hear her own voice anymore

It is 1am and I just reread and annotated the snippet Brandon Sanderson read at London Comic con last week, which is set thousands of years before Alendi and Rashek's time. So, obviously, spoilers for it if you haven't read, but here are my notes if anyone's interested because. Just. Holy shit.

Silver is apparently important, so - COPPERMIND RESEARCH PROLOGUE: Silver is allomantically inert and has no known feruchemical or hemalurgic effects, but electrum (what Elend calls "poor man's atium" in HoA) is 45% gold and 55% silver. It has disruptive effects on many forms of investiture (not to be confused with aluminum, which has blocking effects. They are different, somehow.)

Creatures called the Midnight Dead appear after dark. They can be hurt by silver weapons, repelled with a specific variety of pressed and dried flowers, and their whispers might be detrimental (Landrith mentions using wax to block them? He might just not be able to sleep through it though. No clue.) Their attack patterns at night can be influenced by waist-high fencing.

These Midnight Dead form from a black smoke called the Murk, which manifests at night. Sanderson specifically mentions that this snippet involves the Deepness, so I think it's pretty safe to say this is some early version of the Mists. (BUT. Why is it black smoke? Is it Ruin and Preservation's powers combined? Is Preservation corrupted right now? Ashrhtjgkgkrkf???)

There is a creature/person of some sort called the Ageless, who is either the Iratrian leader or in control of the Midnight Dead. Regardless, whoever does control these zombie-skeleton-vampire guys - their "master" - was once "bit" by the Heritage Sword. (For whatever reason this is really funny to me. Reminds me of Nightblood. Chomp.)

There are also other creatures/people/whothefuckknows called the Chronocrash, who nonmagical blades cannot hurt.

The Heritage Sword was passed down through Landrith's family. It is made of bronze and a quarter of silver, is ineffective against the Chonocrash, but can hurt the Midnight Dead because of the silver. Sometime before Landrith was eleven, his parents went through a lot of trouble to recover this sword. Kiddo Landrith seems to think his family's "curse" will be lifted because of the sword; his mom says otherwise.

Landrith's people are called Gwit, or the Gway Fiatelle, and by tradition due to some past failure they aren't allowed to hold weapons unless employed until they are redeemed. This and the apparent prejudice against them is likely the "curse" kiddo Landrith refers to.

Somewhere on the slopes of Mount Dominant, there is a city named Iratrid, whose buildings are said to be golden. (Does this sound familiar to anyone else? The emphasis on gold + with the city's name makes me think Iriyali. But they're also mostly present in Stormlight, and if you've seen pretty much anything on this blog you know that is not my specialty. Like, at all. Hehe.)

There are four peoples who, before the time of this story, used to live around the foot of Mount Dominant and respect each other. (My note for this section says "but everything changed when the fire nation attacked". I wrote this half an hour ago, I didn't forget it or anything. ....I just think it's funny.)

At one point, Landrith's mother says "weapons do not redeem", which is very Preservation, if I do say so myself.

& This is further backed up later, where Landrith prays to Sethoweth, the old god of his people: "May your stable hand hold this to your heart until I return." (And HOLY SHIT PEOPLE. WE JUST GOT A LERAS REFERENCE. Well, we don't know for sure. But if it's not, I'll eat my hat. ....Chomp.)

Speaking of Preservation (as always, with me): I have very little supporting evidence for this, but the emphasis on Mount Dominant makes me think it might be the one Alendi eventually travels to. AKA the one where the cavern and Well of Ascension is originally placed. (Which just might be important to me, for no reason at all :)

I gotta blabber for a sec about how much I appreciate how unique and SO not-simple of an antagonist Olrox is.

like he's introduced as the Vampire Who Kills Richter's Mom, and it was a straight-up murder. Like he fully sought her out, she was in the process of sending her kid overseas most likely because she knew he was coming - even before we fully get Olrox's side of the context, we can tell that shit was personal. Right down to the vivid green eyes, he's giving weirdly chill disney villain vibes. But the entire rest of the show? He's the dude in the bad guy car of the villain train just sitting and judging (OH is he judging) every other person there.

Olrox tracking down and killing Julia Belmont is the most confrontational we ever see him get. Every other scene he's in? He's watching, assessing, sometimes philosophizing, and eventually pulling his own chess moves, but fighting? Rarely! And the additional context of his character makes him even more fascinating!!

Olrox is really one of the only vampires in both Castlevania and C: Nocturne that seems to hold onto a connection to a human's life - even after he's no longer one. He reminisces to Mizrak about being a human during the fall of the Aztec Empire, he chooses to spend his time more like a human than any vamp since Lisa sent Dracula traveling like a human way back when.

Homeboy crossed the Atlantic by fucking ship, at a time when the trip took literal weeks and weeks and he can't even leave his quarters except at nighttime (granted, idk if he *has* a faster way to cross the ocean but it kinda seems like he'd do the ship trip anyways) he chooses to rent a room at an inn instead of staying at the chateau (and boink a cute human in said room, cough cough), and really seems to avoid other vampires - although I'm not sure if that's cuz he just doesn't vibe with 'em in general, or because he really doesn't vibe with the current hot vampire philosophy of the century, which seems to be very heavy-handled colonialism + elitism

I kinda wouldn't be surprised if it's both honestly - given that the only other vampire we meet besides him who spent time in the americas/new world was a literal plantation owning slaver (and unless I misremember, Annette says there were multiple vampires among the rich in St. Domingue), it seems pretty likely to me that whoever turned him was probably a vamp who had a direct hand in the downfall of his nation - coming to the New World specifically for conquest and to seize resources seems like it would be hella appealing for vampires. It would make a LOT of sense for Olrox's standoffish behavior around the other vamps to go back to him having been turned by someone very similar to them, who was probably not just an enemy to him, but part of this massive wave of destructive change in his human life.

like he really gives an impression of actively disliking and withdrawing from every other villain's motivation in this show - and it makes a lot of sense if my speculating is even a little bit close. The vampire's goals in Nocturne would be very nearly the same thing that drove the fall of the Aztec Empire - desire for power and control, justified by some """""natural order"""" hierarchy which really just boils down to 'we want all of this and we're going to indulge in making up a dramatic jerk-off reason why we're entitled to it, since you can't stop us taking it anyways and we've got time'

Dude seems to make little effort to be vampire-like - we rarely see him revel in his power like many other vampires do, as well as seeing him nonchalantly rubbing elbows with humans. He speaks fondly of a man he loved, who he fell for while said guy was still human, TO the other human he is currently crushing on! And I do mean crush, like he doesn't react to or treat Mizrak like a plaything, almost every time we get an Olrox lore-drop it's because he's talking to Mizrak sincerely about things that matter to him. He LIKE-likes this human, to the point of jumping directly into a fight to whisk Le Crush to safety in front of a vampire so powerful he won't directly oppose her! Absolutely fascinating behavior all around.

MAN but I want to see some flashbacks from this guy - as far as we know, vampirism is completely an Old World thing - Europe, Asia, Africa, every other vampire we've seen in both Castlevania shows has been from these continents. Were there even any vamps there at all before europeans landed on the shores of the americas???? I mean, I've heard of one of the old religions in mesoamerica having a suspiciously vampirelike god, but how would that connect to Olrox getting vampirized as a 30ish Aztec man?

MAN OH MAN but I am looking forward to seeing what Olrox gets up to in s2 -I'm burning to know if he's gonna survive the series or not, because despite him being the first villain we meet in Nocturne and doing a deed that usually gets villains the 'karmic death' ending, overall he's not really being written like a bad guy the audience wants to see go down. especially since he's not actually in opposition to our protagonists and has a vested interest in keeping one of Team Good Guys newer members alive. My guess is he's either going to get a similar ending to Isaac, a villain that we root for who actually catches a break and doesn't die, ooorrrrrrrr he's gonna get a Highly Tragic sort of death

Last Book: Uhhhh that would have to be The Wretched of the Earth (1961) by Frantz Fanon bc I referenced it in the job application statement of research interests I was just writing the other day so I pulled out my copy and got engrossed in reading it again

Last Movie: Sidhi (1999) by Joel Lamangan, which is a Filipino-language film that unfortunately doesn't have English subtitles for our non-Pinoy mutuals on here. But essentially it's a grossly underrated film about a mute provincial woman who gets matched with a man who has another secret wife but instead of it turning into a love triangle, it's a very tragic but triumphant story about women overcoming the patriarchy in their own ways. Ended up watching it bc my mom and I are on a binge of all the award-winning movies by Nora Aunor, the best actress in the Philippines (by national consensus) who just passed away

Last Show: I'll be honest, unless Dropout TV and Netflix comedy specials (*cough* Matteo Lane and Gianmarco Soresi *cough*) count, then the last time I watched TV was What We Do in the Shadows last year. Or that pilot episode of Interview with the Vampire that I raved to @anababy-chimid about and then......didn't have brain space to continue watching after that :P

Favorite Color: Most shades of purple! My favorites are royal purple, amethyst, and lavender/lilac that leans on the cooler or true purple side.

Current Obsession: Upcycling clothes. I'm on an extremely thrifty bend rn and there are many clothes in my closet that are either too worn for work or no longer fit me (lost a lot of weight after I became happy again with my new job and new medication), so I've got a seemingly endless queue of things to alter hanging in my sewing room. The next one which I'm v excited about is a chambray A-line midi dress that looks matronly on me now the way it is, but imma hack it up and make it a bias-cut maxi-skirt with a basque waist and faux shirring in the back. It has pockets!!!

Sweet, Spicy, Savory: Savory! Occasionally I get the craving for sweets, but I'm pre-diabetic and diabetes runs in every single aunt and uncle on my mom's side (plus my mom), so I gotta steer clear of them.

Something I’m looking forward to: Finally getting the energy and focus to watch Superman (James Gunn) so the bestie @notaparty-trick and I can yap about it! I've just got a very specific checklist of professional responsibilities I have to attend to first...

CNC is fun. I write DubCon, be it Fuck or Die, Arranged Marriage, Sexual Slavery with Enthusiastic Consent etc. (In my book, DubCon does not existing in RL, but it is a useful tag to differentiate between fics you might enjoy reading and fics you want to stay away from).

class relations and thomas hutter in nosferatu 2024

i think this is all the nosferatu thoughts i have in my head for main.

thomas' character neatly explores ambitions and insecurities of the emerging middle class in 19th-century europe, specifically (and im paraphrasing @cafeleningrad here. tysm for the added context!) the characters live on the northern german coast, in a fictional city that appears to be a swedish colony. during this time, sweden’s overseas holdings were in economic decline, creating financial strain for many. friedrich, as a dock owner likely from old money, remains stable, whereas thomas, burdened with debt, must secure an income in a struggling town.

politically, the region is in turmoil. germany, as a unified nation, would not exist until 1871, and the decades leading up to unification were marked by instability. in response, many middle- and upper-class germans withdrew into domesticity and romanticism, deliberately ignoring the broader chaos. friedrich embodies this mindset—his rigid adherence to patriarchal structures and his fixation on an idealized home life reflect a widespread desire to impose personal order in the face of political uncertainty.

economic anxieties permeate the domestic sphere is thomas' mind too though. see, something interesting about thomas and ellens relationship is that it looks like ellen comes from money. her family home looks like a manor house and her childhood bedroom even looks larger than the apartment her and thomas share. the script also says they have a topiary garden which is definitely fancy.

it is kind of sweet in the way it implies a love match since ellen's marrying "below her station" in that regard but i also think this class disparity informs his insecurity in their relationship. he strives to take on a provider role and attain the same idealized domestic life and financial independence friedrich has. its not like that desire exists in a vacuum though, as vi pointed out friedrich does ask when they'll be having kids and is very generous with his money and loans to thomas which emasculates him as a provider since he hasn't reached those "benchmarks" like his friend has. there's also herr knock. "a new husband needs new wages," knock leverages thomas' financial insecurities as well as his precarious financial position to lure him into accepting a long and ultimately disastrous assignment.

until he comes face to face with ellen's tormentor, thomas struggles to balance economic realities and his desire to genuinely care for ellen. and you can see that when he initially dismisses her nightmare and sends her off to the hardings' to carry on with his assignment which he believes to be securing their future and maybe even what he expects ellen to value having come from money (nicer lodging, a midservant, the ability to support children).

thomas' interactions with orlok similarly reflect his precarious social and financial standing. thomas enters the vampire’s domain thinking he is the agent of commerce, the man negotiating the sale of an estate, the professional wielding the authority of paperwork and contracts. but orlok immediately undermines this dynamic. from the moment they meet, the count does not engage with thomas as an equal in business; instead, he toys with him, positioning him as prey long before any overt supernatural horror is revealed.

money, which has defined thomas’ sense of self and security, becomes meaningless in orlok’s world. thomas’ attempts at maintaining professional decorum fall flat against orlok’s eerie disinterest in the transactional. there is a perverse irony in how thomas, a man whose livelihood depends on property and ownership, finds himself trapped in a place where all pretense of control is stripped away. his financial ambitions, his carefully curated aspirations of upward mobility, disintegrate as he realizes he has been lured into an arrangement in which he has no power. the estate sale, which once represented his economic salvation, becomes irrelevant. the true exchange occurring in orlok’s castle is not about land or money, but about life itself—thomas’ life and ellen's life, which orlok has already deemed his for the taking.
