Chemists, I love y’all. But as a linguistics nerd by heart. The newer names are just, a bit too on the point.
like tungsten is literally just heavy stone. Like yeah, it is a heavy stone. But it doesn’t even use any cool Latin. there could be a new element discovered called “helicopterkillium” because it is used for helicopters but it can kill you.
whats that new 'room temperature superconductor' everyone is talking about?
The benefits of a true room-temperature superconductor are phenomenal. From magnetic levitation to advances in nuclear power, such a substance has been sought for ages.
Unfortunately, the only known substance with that trait exists not on Earth, but on the forest moon of Pandora where it is known as "Unobtanium." Pandora is inhabited by a people called the Na'vi, who have every right to live in peace despite the encroachments of RDA, who sell the substance for millions of dollars back on Earth. Though this makes sense from an economic standpoint despite the cruelty of it all, the weird thing is that RDA has shifted to harvesting whale snot, which is stated to be far less valuable an even more difficult to obtain, but whatever, the fight scene was awesome and I hope they still get to make a third movie.
Unobtanium searching herself on google to find out alien whale brain juice knocked her off the list of "most valuable substance known to man"
right on the nose
I don't understand critics getting upset over writers calling fictional metals unobtanium, at least when the main characters are from English speaking countries.
Unobtanium is an old engineering meme, I can absolutely see somebody naming a newly discovered metal that if it had desirable properties for engineering.
This is why we’re here. Unobtanium. Because this little gray rock sells for twenty million a kilo. No other reason. This is what pays for the party. And it’s what pays for your science. Comprendo?
