Button Man by Andrew Gross takes place in the 20s and 30s of NYC. Family tragedy, three brothers who each choose a different path, the garment district, the Russian Jewish mob and one brother who stands up to them. This is an uncommon story but Gross does a great job making the characters come alive. You are fully invested by the end. Be sure to read the author acknowledgement to get one more twist to the story. I’ve had Everyone Brave is Forgiven by Chris Cleave on the shelf for a long time so when Kelli @amillionpages talked about a buddy read I was in. This is historical fiction that takes place in the early days of WW ll in London. The air raids, the rationing, the starvation, friends dying and the duty people are expected to have during war. This was a tough book emotionally but Cleave does a great job showing us the tremendous English spirit in a time of desperation. I did the audiobook and there’s a scene where the children left behind from the evacuation, the broken and damaged, are doing a Christmas play - I almost had to pull the car over. So much emotion in this story. I’ve been making a concerted effort to tackle my physical owned TBR books. I bought Newt’s Emerald on @bookoutlet (professional TBR makers 😏) over a year ago. I finally got around to reading it. And it was a fun little read! If you love Regency Romance similar to Georgette Heyer’s style, you will enjoy this. I love Heyer and have read almost all her regency books. Turns out, Nix is a big fan of hers and it definitely shows in this. I would say this is more of a middle grade/younger teen version of the genre mixed with fantasy. I really hope he comes out with more books like this one! 💚 . #QOTD: Do you like Regency Romance? I love it!! I read both varieties: Heyer/Austinish and bodice rippers. 🤣 I love reading the descriptions of the fashion and ballrooms best. . Working through my #unreadshelfproject2019 Audiobook version of An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir. Maybe you don’t normally read YA fantasy but Tahir has given us a nice story. There’s Laia the Scholar, who is now a slave and spy for the Resistance. Elias is in his final days of Mask training at Blackcliff Military Academy. But the Augurs have other plans. Tahir does some nice world-building. One issue with the audiobook. It took a few chapters to understand the narrator. The Breakdown by B.A.Paris is her follow-up to the buzzy Behind Closed Doors. And part of my #unreadshelfproject2019 “Cass is having a hard time since she saw the car in the woods. She didn’t stop to help and found out the woman had been murdered. And Cass had been friends with her. Cass starts forgetting things and getting calls from the murderer (she thinks) Can she pull it together? Then she gets something that makes her rethink everything. Now what will she do?” Book is a decent read. Cass’s breakdown gets tiresome. Too me it takes a bit long to make a point. You may guess some of the end. And there are several moments where you’ll yell at Cass.
