What’s one of your most cherished books? . I know this copy may not look it but Spindle’s End is one of my most cherished books. I’ve had this one since Borders was still in business (it still has the price sticker!) It’s moved across the country twice with me and has been in all of my apartments. . I have to be super careful when I read it now because it’s starting to fall apart. I discover new things every time I read it and I’m not even sure how many times I’ve read it cover to cover. What was the last book you’ve read that surprised you? . Thank you to @albertwhitman and @netgalley for my eARC of Descendant of the Crane!! This is @joanhewrites’s debut novel and I absolutely loved it. I’d expected to like this one but this surpassed even my high expectations for it. . I finished Descendant of the Crane last night and I already want to reread it. I thought I knew how the story would go but at almost every point I was wrong. Joan He does a fantastic job of taking fantasy tropes and adding a dash of magic to create something new. Plus the world-building was good (with the potential for it to really expand in the future books). The plot was this great mix of murder mystery and coming-of-age tale that kept me engrossed from the very first chapter. It started off a tad slower but that really worked since it allowed the author to lay a solid foundation for an intense finale. . The characters were also all so vibrant. Hesina really jumped off the page for me and I loved seeing how she grew and changed throughout the novel. We mostly see the other characters through their relationship with Hesina but I thought that added an interesting element. I was never 100% sure if how she saw/interacted with the characters was actually representative of who they are. So it was fascinating to see how everything unfolded. . I’d recommend this one if you’re looking for a YA fantasy that feels fresh and new. What’s a cover you just couldn’t resist? . I originally bought the US edition of The Queens Of Innis Lear but then I saw this beauty 😍 After months of debating, I finally caved and bought this edition. I regret nothing, this is one of the most beautiful books I own. . Plus the book is one of my favorites! It’s a King Lear retelling centered around his daughters. It’s immersive, the world-building is fantastic, and there’s some incredible female characters. What was the last book you couldn’t put it down? . I’ve finally processed my thoughts about Aurora Rising to write a (semi)coherent review! Thank you so much to @getunderlined for the eARC ❤️ . I went into Aurora Rising with sky-high expectations after The Illuminae Files (and all of their other amazing books). And yet this book still somehow still exceeded them. So here are my top five reasons to read Aurora Rising! . 1) It blends science fiction and magic in a brilliant way and the world-building is FANTASTIC. 2) #SquadGoals I just adored every member of the squad and how they came together. It was such a joy to watch! Plus all of the characters were so well-developed. 3) Excellent pacing. This book just flew by and it was a struggle to put it down. 4) The humor! I love when a book can make me laugh and then make me tear up a few pages later. 5) Just read this book, I promise you won’t regret it. (But if you need a real fifth reason, there’s a sassy AI and some truly excellent world-building notes in between chapters. Which include a princess bride reference) . In case you couldn’t guess, Aurora Rising gets a full five stars from me! Happy book birthday to When We Left Cuba by @chanelcleeton!! Thank you to @berkleypub for gifting me this copy ❤️ . I started this one last night and it had everything I loved so much from Next Year in Havana (which was a five star read for me). There’s still the gorgeous writing, the realistic characters, and a story that just leaps off the page. There’s also intrigue and romance and history. Who is your favorite villain? . I’m on the blog tour for WICKED SAINTS by @glitzandshadows today! I met Emily last year at Yall West and I’ve been looking forward to her debut since then. I received a super early copy of the book (thank you @wednesdaybooks for the ARC!) and I loved how dark and magical it was. Q: Who is your favorite character? Who was your favorite character to write? . A: Malachiasz Czechowicz hands down no question as an answer for both. He is a nightmare to deal with and I absolutely adore him. What’s a book you’ve picked up because of a recommendation from someone on bookstagram? . A while ago, Where The Crawdads Sing was the @reesesbookclubxhellosunshine book of the month. Highly recommend both the book and the narrator. It was so thought-provoking and beautifully written . Also, I spent some time yesterday cataloguing my shelves to help me track my unread books. While I was going through them, I found a few series, including this one, that I’ve loved but haven’t finished (probably because they were buried under other books 🙈).
