Unsounded's first book just finished after about 15 years of updates and I knew I wanted to do something Fun to celebrate, so thought I'd share the animatic I whipped together for the final fanworks contest!

It's got some Significant Spoilers in it so go read Unsounded here before you watch it! It might take a couple days but the read is Well Worth it if you've never checked it out~ :))

I threw some other little bonus thoughts and comments under the cut just for fun, enjoy!

I’ve been reading Unsounded since whenever chapter 4 originally came out (maybe 2012?? horrors abound thinking on it too long) and couldn’t be more thrilled to commemorate that decade plus reading experience with this little tribute animatic!

Song is King and Lionheart by Of Monsters And Men (Straight up when I realized how well this song fit I ended up pacing my workplace for 30 minutes just listening to the song on loop and working the animatic out in my head like a prophet experiencing visions haha)

All animation done in Clip Studio Paint (over the course of like 4 straight days ha h a procrastination is a hell of a drug)

Fun fact: did you know I've actually made something for each one of unsounded's now 6 fanworks contests? They read like a bit of an artistic time capsule stretching back nearly 10 years now hahaha - I admit many of them I whipped together fairly quickly, so it was nice to sit down and actually spend some real time on a piece - given the number of hours of entertainment the comic has provided seems only fair!

actually while we're going down memory lane I found this from 20fuckin13?? This is an impressive one because this Must have been from my old bamboo tablet days and I'm 90% sure this was drawn in pen and then scanned in to be colored haha, it's like an archeological relic - I have the fuzziest memory of struggling a lot with drawing a sitting pose I liked and I feel like there's a Real chance I had one of my friends in high school hold that pose while I sketched or something 🤔

Unsounded is an amazing comic with wonderful characters and dialogue. I have read it one and a half times now, and I think I have found satisfactory answers to a very important question. What are the characters' opinions on trans people?

Duane Adelier: I think he would be supportive of trans people if he met and talked to one. He would still need a bit more convincing to accept non-binary genders though, and he'd probably still be casually misogynistic.

Sette Frummagem: She would probably be supportive but would also make transphobic jokes occasionally, no matter what boundaries any individual trans people have set. I'd put the rest of the Frummagem family in this category, with varying degrees of disrespect, except from Anadyne, who i think would be just supportive, as she is not interested in petty bouts of one-ups-manship.

Mathis Quigley: I don't think he cares for trans people. But only because he is generally misanthropic, not because he is particularly bigoted. Nevertheless, I wouldn't expect any allyship from him.

Matty: He's a sweet baby boy. He would definitely be supportive.

Jivi: He would be supportive, but he would be prickly about it initially. Like he might get one's name or pronouns wrong and when they correct him he'd get mad, but I think that eventually he would get over it and be normal about it.

Emil Toma: There is a point where Mathis debates Duane's humanity but Emil is like "you say your name is Duane and I accept it and that's how I'll treat you". So I think he would be supportive of trans people. If a trans person committed crimes against the crescian queen, Emil would definitely use their correct name and pronouns as he arrested them.

Elka: She would be generally positive, but she would misgender a trans person she thinks did something bad.

Bastion Winalils: Supportive, but he may or may not be a chaser.

Queen Sonorie: Of course she is supportive of trans people. However, her plans as a politician do not include them, as she believes she has much more pressing matters to attend to.

General Bell: If Bell lived in the current real world he would be a youtuber that made videos about being an alpha male, so I'm pretty sure he would be a transphobe.

Cutter: Transphobic, but only because he hates everyone already.

Starfish: Transphobic. He would commit hate crimes.

Murkoph: Supportive. He would commit hate crimes.

One of the things that I infinitely respect and enjoy about Unsounded (even when it makes reading it hard for me) is how it delivers its worldbuilding. It's all done through the politics and opinions of the people who live in it, which naturally means that it's going to be biased and often wrong. So all the worldbuilding is presented through the dialogue of unreliable narrators. This can lead to some amazing reveals and insights into how it is to live in that world, along with individual characterisation. It also makes rereads feel rewarding, because the reader has extra context and can glean further details.

Shout out to Duane for being the wise, learned man who loves to talk and teach Sette many things about the world; only to have the comic slowly reveal that he's a close-minded nationalist whom we should not always take on his word!

Unsounded's worldbuilding has been one of the most engaging to me. Its magic system, called pymary in the world of the webcomic, has been written with a lot of thought and consideration in the ways it could affect it, and it's obvious the way that world was written has informed the way pymary should be written. The webcomic reasons that if a magic system like that were to exist, a pertinent use of it would be to create talking hologram boobs and buttcheeks that advertise the services of a brothel. This makes the world feel authentic and real, and the comic is very astute in not only including them, but also using them in a brief action sequence.

Duane Adelier is like a really cool uncle that is eloquent but also fun, has interesting stories to tell, is great with kids, but then is also racist against albanians and romani people.

Sette Frummagem is what if Andrew Tate was a little girl.
