Fandom: Hunger Games series written by Suzanne Collins, films directed by Gary Ross & Francis Lawrence

The University of Arizona Wildcats broke my heart when they lost to Buffalo. My beloved Cats lost the tournament in the first round! So, in honor of that loss, I’m writing about the Hunger Games series: losses, many losses.

It was a teacher friend who recommended the Hunger Games series to me; she said her teenage sons loved the series. Then she read them and loved them; she urged me to read them.

“It’s the kind of stuff you love,” she gushed. She was right. When I began the books, Suzanne Collins had already published the entire trilogy. Fandoms have a way of magnifying a finished work. I wish I could remember when I read the trilogy the first time. It was well before the first film came out. I recall seeing the cast announcement and marveling at how the trio of actors portraying the key protagonists could possibly convey the presence of characters I’d come to love.

Fast forward from two-thousand-something to 2012: I had nothing to worry about. Jennifer Lawrence and the entire cast had me buying the videos, watching, and re-watching. I confess that as a fan, I reread a series before any release of a film for the series. Since Mockingjay was cut into two films, just my prerequisite film reading had me revisiting the book series four times! Each time I read them, I find something else to love.

When the second film came out I was teaching sixth grade. I held an essay contest to host two winners at a movie premiere. At that premiere I won a framed movie poster of the first film. It still hangs in my classroom. I feel like Katniss Everdeen watches over us as we learn.

In 2014 I used part of the money my dad left me to buy a class set of the first title, Hunger Games, to read with my eighth graders. I was thrilled to learn our school district had the book on our list of approved titles for literature studies. My class was broken into “Districts of Panem” and we extrapolated meaning from the dystopian tale. In turns we were horrified and inspired by story events. For the first time, I was looking at the story through the eyes of fourteen year olds. Different. My sixth graders hadn’t studied the book with me; a few had read it and entered the contest. My eighth graders read and discussed the book. You see things differently when you look at them with a group of teenagers. The losses are more keenly felt. Think: the emotion of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet; they were fourteen year olds. Everything is extreme drama.

I’d say that taking twenty-four 12-18 year olds annually to sacrifice all but one is pretty extreme.

For anyone unfamiliar with the back story, know that Suzanne Collins was also horrified. In interviews she spoke about how the idea for the series originated. She came across a reality television show that pitted contestants against each other. I don’t think she ever named the show. I imagined it was something along the lines of the initial Survivor television show; each week someone got kicked off the island. (I never watched it, but a friend from my writing group did; she was hooked and talked about it often.) The brilliant Suzanne Collins had been raised with history and mythology; she imagined the Ancient Roman practice of putting captured warriors in the Coliseum and having them fight to the death for the audience’s entertainment as the precursor for this century’s reality television. She named the fictional country Panem in honor of the Roman poet Juvenal’s admonition of panem et circenses or “bread and circuses.” Basically, those in power stayed in power by assuring that the masses had plenty to eat and something to keep them entertained. The catch is that in Collins’s world, the masses don’t have enough to eat; they barely have enough to survive. She ratcheted up the literary connections by tapping into Ancient Greek mythology. The annual Athenian tribute of 14 youth to the Cretan Minotaur became the 24 Tributes from the twelve districts who are forced to fight in a televised “Hunger Games.” Unlike the fourteen youth in Ancient Greece, one tribute survives the “Hunger Games” and becomes a symbol of hope for the masses, the Victor.

Sixteen year old Katniss Everdeen volunteers as tribute to prevent her twelve year old sister from entering the games. While this is not much of a spoiler in and of itself, it is a foreshadowing. That’s all I’m going to say about that. (Please pronounce that last line in true Forrest Gump style. Thank you.)

Even now, in 2018, after the dust has settled from the release of the final film, my students will call out, “I volunteer as tribute!” when it is evident that I need some task performed in our classroom. It warms my heart.

The line spoken by President Snow, played by Donald Sutherland, encapsulates the series for me:

“Hope is the only thing stronger than fear. A little hope is effective; a lot of hope is dangerous.”

Here’s to the dangerous concept of hope! Like all parents, like all teachers, like all humans, I hope for a brighter tomorrow.
