#repost • @mvrdv When we design large new buildings, can we create sustainable structures that sequester carbon while merging with the landscape? Our proposal for the Timber Headquarters would be the largest timber building in the world.⁠ ⁠ A carbon-neutral building that stands 28 meters high, it is supported by a forest of 119 wood columns. #repost • @mvrdv How can we combine urban density, biodiversity, and comfortable living? De Oosterlingen is a block of seven sustainable residential buildings, prominently located in a formerly industrial area rapidly developing into a lively residential district! ⁠🌿⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ Real estate developer @beingdevelopment and @stadgenoot wanted a green, people-focused street that would form a striking entrance to the emerging Oostenburg neighbourhood. MVRDV designed seven adjoining buildings, each with its own identity, its own living style organised around a collective space and rooftop, and its own contribution to greening the city.⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ The buildings are stepped, with terraces leading up from the lowest buildings to the tower at one end. At one end is “the greenhouse” and then, in order, are “the beekeeper”, “the lump”, “the garden”, “the house”, “the rock”, and “the birdhouse”. Together, the seven buildings comprise a green lab, or green expo.⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ The roofs of the lower buildings will be activated with gardens, an apple orchard, urban farming, or a rooftop forest. In addition to these “low-tech” solutions which help generate very low emissions, there are also numerous practical interventions to achieve a holistic sustainable vision.⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ The human dimension is a central consideration in the scheme; walking routes have been designed so that residents can easily meet each other, promoting a sense of community. #repost • @mvrdv Can we design spaces that bring nature into the city, and the city-dwellers closer to nature? Our project Ilot de l’Octroi is a residential development with multi-level curved façades that take inspiration from rock formations – playing with geometry, colours, and materials!⁠⁠ 🌿🪨 ⁠⁠ The project is part of a shift in emphasis from the centre of Rennes to the city’s outer areas, connected by the pedestrianised Mail François Mitterrand. This move from a rural to urban context has meant denser developments occurring at the edges, to prevent encroachment onto the countryside.⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ The design makes the river its focal point, with all apartments possessing outdoor spaces - a mix of balconies facing the waterfront, loggias, and terraces. Trees and greenery from the public square connect upwards to the green rooftops following the façades.
