Friendly reminder of a thing that most maybe don’t realize but it could really help us
Young people make up the largest group of potential voters in the upcoming US presidential election. There are a lot of us. We have an opinion, we have a say in who has political power, and we have the most at stake since we have to live with whatever happens.
How many politicians degrade us as ignorant youths who don’t know anything and don’t care to educate ourselves? They know a huge percentage of us don’t vote. These candidates that bash us young adults actually count on us not voting. They rely on us not using our voices. That is not the kind of person you want running the country that you’re living in. That is exactly the kind of person that we let step right into power if we don’t do something about it.
If you want something to happen, go make your voice heard. If you’re legally qualified to be a voter, register as soon as you can. Go cast your vote when the time comes to do so where you live. This is how change happens.
Ranting online can only get you so far. All that talk needs to be backed up with action. When enough people act towards a certain goal, that’s when things start happening. That’s when there’s a chance that things will go in the direction you hope. What I say here doesn’t matter if I don’t do something about it, if I don’t cast a vote, if you don’t. I am only one person. Each of you reading this is only one person. Each person you know is only one person. We, all together, are an impact.
How many people can vote but choose not to? It’s not only young adults, by the way. My mom has never, in her whole life, voted. When I was a kid, I always thought, “She’s just one person. Probably figures she doesn’t make much difference. Guess she’s probably right.” But that’s not right, because it’s not just her. It’s a million people thinking just like her, thinking their votes wouldn’t make a difference. A million votes, wherever they’re put, definitely make a difference.
Find out when to vote and do it. Vote in the primaries, not just on the Big Day in November (Tuesday the 8th). Primaries determine who’s gonna be on that final ballot.
Date of the primary election varies by state. Make sure you’ve registered in time. Sometimes, you can only vote for a certain candidate if you’ve registered with a certain party preference. Again, that varies by state, so look into that.
This post is about the presidential election (that’s kind of the big thing right now), but it’s important to remember that there are other elections as well. Congress is the law-making body in this country. Who we choose as President is important, but a president’s power only goes so far. Veto power is a thing. Congress can shoot down things that the President wants to do. But we vote for them, too! Congress seats are up for election every two years (including this year). So check that out, too.
