UtD question! Tell us everything about Sonic's werewolf form plz~
I’d be happy to! But I must also explain a few unique circumstances if you want to understand Sonic’s unfortunate transformation in Unleash the Dark.
Here are some similarities and differences between Unleashed and UtD!
✅ Dark Gaia splits and disperses upon awakening: Consistent with the canon, Dark Gaia is awoken too early and breaks down, spreading its pieces across the world. It’s important to keep in mind that every piece isn’t a minion, it is Dark Gaia itself.
❌ Dark Gaia is only a threat at night: This is one of of the bigger divergences from the game. In Unleash the Dark, Dark Gaia’s essence is present anywhere where light is not present.
✅ Dark Gaia’s pieces can possess multiple hosts: This is largely consistent with the game canon, the only alterations to this rule regards the scale and method.
The scale of Dark Gaia’s influence in UtD is much larger than in Unleashed, to the point where it is labeled a kind of supernatural pandemic. Those who are affected are called The Afflicted. Anyone can be possessed, and symptoms lie dormant whenever a certain amount of light is present.
The method is slightly altered from the game too. In Unleashed, NPCs who are possessed tend to act loopy, manic, or despairingly depressed—in UtD however, it’s a little more personal to the host. An afflicted person can expect their behavior to uniquely reflect the deepest, darkest parts of their psyche. It’s also important to note that Dark Gaia is unable to lie about its host.
❌ Dark Gaia can be exercised from a host with a flash of light: A fun gimmick in Unleashed is that you can expel and battle Dark Gaia’s pieces by flashing Chip’s camera light at a possessed NPC. It’s not so simple in UtD; it is possible to free a host from Dark Gaia’s grasp, but it seems the only way to do that is to bring all of Dark Gaia’s hiding spots to light…
❌ Dark Gaia can manifest without a host: In Unleashed, there are hundreds upon thousands of Dark Gaia’s pieces roaming around the night, but it’s not the same in UtD. Dark Gaia is too weak to manifest on its own, thanks to its early awakening. If enough pieces come back together, that does increase the chances that Dark Gaia can physically appear, but nobody has seen that happen yet…
In the context of the Afflicted—when a piece of Dark Gaia is expelled from a host, it simply moves to another. I mean, so long as that person is currently possessed.
In UtD, is Sonic a werewolf?? Not technically—he’s among the Afflicted. He is possessed by Dark Gaia, and altered in the dark. Sonic is the only case to undergo a physical transformation, though.
Huh… I wonder why Dark Gaia chose that form for him?
Anywho—since you’re so curious about his affliction, I can list a few more fun facts about Sonic in this AU and how he handles the curse:
✅ Yeah. The transformation is agony. On the bright side, Sonic has a lot of opportunities to keep Dark Gaia at bay—so long as he remains in a decent amount of light, he won’t undergo a change, regardless if it’s nighttime or not. If he happens to slip up, it’s a quick change.
… So long as he lets it take him.
❌ Nobody knows Sonic is Afflicted. For a while, Sonic doesn’t know either, so it’s not exactly his fault. But, when it inevitably dawns on him, he’s already too deep in a lie he never knew he told. Can you blame him for keeping his mouth shut? He’s got it covered anyway…
✅ The circumstances of Sonic becoming Afflicted are similar to the opening cutscene of Unleashed. There are still differences—but it’s not my secret to tell.
❔Too strong to lose himself? That’s a spoiler. Sorry.
Thank you for the ask darling!!! I’m happy to clarify or answer more whenever!! :D
