Transcript (Utterson speaking to Hyde): Mr. Hyde, I presume?
Transcript (Jekyll talking in thought bubble): My dear Utterson, would you mind testing this for me? I trust your opinion, and I would be forever grateful.
Transcript (Utterson thinking): Such professional hands...I should hold his hand shake his hand more.
The line art w/o color and the color w/o line art:
Here's my Utterson design! I really love how he turned out! He was surprisingly easy for me to design (well, from the shoulders up). Unlike Hyde, he only required one design ref. He was a lot of fun to draw! I also really enjoyed coloring him! I struggle a lot with picking color palettes that go well with each other, but I think the colors work really well here. Not only that, but the colors are distinguished enough that they can do the shaping without line art being necessary.
I really love how this looks with just the color alone. It makes me want to do more lineless art. It's been a while since I've tried lineless art, so it'd be fun to return to. Also, with just the color, the thinking Utterson doodle reminds me a lot of the art style from the game Night in the Woods (I still need to finish that game).
For the glass effect, (since I work with only three layers) I redid some of the line art for the eye on the color layer, colored the glass area a light blue on the line art layer with some white highlights, and, after erasing the blue (+highlights) at 50% opacity, fixed the line art outside of the glass area that got affected. I think this does a good job at telling you that there's glass there without it being in your face about it (aka making it hard to see the eyes behind them).
Now I need to design Lanyon. I do have a design in mind for him, but I haven't properly draw him yet. But for now, I need to go to bed.
