the difference between how flame and wemmbu have been treated by "authority" figures is very notorious and honestly kinda sad

like, flame has always been praised and all of his mentors so far have been like "you have a lot of talent, you surprised me" and have complimented him. from swight to itz to mane and now theo too, they all admit he's strong. even his enemies have said it

whereas wemmbu was called weak over and over by zam and a lost cause by mane. both of them had a huge impact on his character and what they did to him became his motivation to become strong, so he'd never be treated like that again

thinking about wemmbu’s slow deterioration from flame’s perspective. wemmbu first tracking flame down to his house, spirited and quipping and playing with flame’s dogs after they fight. wemmbu fighting flame in the tournament with a determination to win, and a determination to get stronger after the loss. wemmbu running away in the farlands, more interested in gaining power, more obsessed with chasing it than actually fighting flame, that’s odd. wemmbu finding flame at the old mafia outpost and there is no joy for fighting in her voice, no anticipation to test her blade against flame’s; there is only madness and a complete belief in her superiority. and then there is their reunion after getting unmasked, grim resignation and exhaustion. this is no longer fun. flame found wemmbu, but where is the rival he used to know?
