After receiving word of the fighting inside the colony, the Falmel begins attacking Side 7's spaceport. White Base's captain, Paolo Cassius, is critically injured during the bombardment, and most of his senior officers are likewise wounded or killed.

The attack is a cover for Char to infiltrate the colony, ordered by Vice Admiral Dozle Zabi to investigate the remains of the V Project. Cassius sends Amuro to destroy the abandoned materials with the Gundam, forcing Char to escape. Char returns to the Falmel in time to deploy his remaining Zakus to bar White Base from leaving.

The Gundam is launched to confront the Red Comet, and while Amuro is hopelessly outmatched by Char's skill, the Gundam's lunar titanium armour makes it invulnerable to the Zakus' machine guns. After his wingman is shot down, Char withdraws, and the Falmel retreats.

White Base evacuates from Side 7 with the salvaged prototypes and countless refugees in tow, heading for Luna 2. Ensign Bright Noa, acting captain, officially assigns Amuro as the Gundam's pilot.

En route to Side 7, White Base is spotted and followed by the Falmel, captained by Lt. Commander Char Aznable – Zeon's Red Comet.

Char dispatches a squad of Zakus to investigate the ship's presence at the civilian colony. Discovering the EFF's long-rumoured V Project, one of the Zaku pilots goes on the attack, hoping to destroy the prototype mobile suits before they can be loaded onto the waiting Federation carrier.

Amuro Ray –a citizen of Side 7 and son of the project's head, Lieutenant Tem Ray– commandeers the RX-78-2 Gundam and eliminates the attackers.

During the fighting, Lieutenant Ray goes missing in action, sucked out into space when a destroyed Zaku blows a hole in the colony wall. Many civilians are killed in the chaos, and the rest begin evacuating onto White Base.

Under the command of Lt. Colonel Paolo Cassius, White Base launches on a test flight to Luna 2. Once there, she is dispatched to Side 7, to retrieve the V Project's prototype mobile suits and return with them to Jaburo.

The V Project produces the RX-77-2 Guncannon, a mid-range support unit based on the earlier, long-range Guntank.

As the Federation's first fully humanoid weapon, it represents a considerable leap forward in their mobile suit designs. The Guncannon also features a strong enough reactor to power beam weapons.

Final testing of the RX-78-2 Gundam begins at Side 7.

Already impressed by the RX-78's performance, the EFF order the creation of an even more advanced Gundam, based on the untested but cutting-edge RX-78-3 G-3 Gundam. Development of the new project is assigned to Augusta Base, where the Federation has begun its own research on Newtypes.

At Jaburo, the EFF commission the first Pegasus-class assault carrier, SCV-70 White Base, which began life as SCV-27A before being completed under the V Project.
