Chapter 3

Chapter 3 is entirely dedicated to a short story that further establishes Yoh’s powers and responsibilities as a Shaman. He and Manta stumble upon a ghost haunting a billboard. Yoh almost gets crushed by it.

A lingering theme in this chapter is how different Yoh and Manta have been taught to be, and it causes friction. Manta pours a lot of himself into studying, like an idealized version of Japanese students who have this intense pressure to outdo their fellow students, get into the best universities, and get into the best jobs after that. Manta’s behavior is what’s expected of you as a child going through this educational process.

In contrast, Yoh is… pretty much the image of the delinquent. He doesn’t care, worse he cheats. Manta sees that as a grave failure and spends some time away trying to process his frustration. That’s when the ghost catches up to him and Yoh arrives to save him, revealing he’s studied what happened and how to help Kanta the Signmaker.

I like this twist because it’s not a story of how Manta got Yoh to study, or how Yoh really should have been studying the whole time. His line of work is different, and he’s only going through the motions of studying because that’s needed in the Japan of his time. For something that actually matters, like the ghost stuck in the billboard, he’ll spend the time.

Here’s my favorite panel of the chapter. Amidamaru explains that Yoh let himself get hit, to let the ghost know he is a Shaman, he sees them, and he can help. I think it speaks to a lot of Yoh’s behavior later, the way he’ll act towards Ren, Hao, and other antagonists. He’ll let himself get hit to show them he sees them, is willing to listen, is willing to help.

Doodle concepts of V1c3’s original design before they went on their evil arc >:3c Originally V1C3 [original name unknown] was a bot created to help with the workload of a major company. They learned about the problems humanity was facing, and in trying to fix one got scrapped. Which this incident and in dealing with an upper echelon of very greedy and uncaring humans, is what drove V1C3’s poor opinion on humanity and their eventual sabotage/uprising/power trip. I think there was someone they cared for, but when they needed them most, they were nowhere to be found. Though they still incorperate their memory into their new sleek upgrade.

Design wise, I want V1C3’s evolution to kind of run in the opposite direction from Castor! =3 While Castor finds ways to express emotions and personality, V1C3 closes themselves off. Does not choose to emote, and keeps their face screen dark. I also think V1’s og design being blocky and round helps with showcasing the HUGE emotional change that happens. For those who haven’t seen V1C3’s look, they typically look more like this!
