Vanity Project

She loved mirrors more than mornings kept them like altars hung on every wall little gods reflecting her back to herself

I learned quickly there was no room for two people in her reflection

She spoke in angles and good lighting in the language of "good sides" tilting her face toward anything that might make her glow brighter than she already believed she was

I became background a shadow holding the camera a pair of hands adjusting focus while she rehearsed perfection like it was survival

Compliments were currency and I paid in full overdrafting sincerity just to keep her smiling at me instead of past me

At night when the world dimmed and the mirrors lost their power she'd ask me softly "Do you still think I'm beautiful?"

And I would say yes even as I wondered if she'd disappear completely without someone there to say it

Loving her was like loving a flame that only ever burned inward hungry for itself untouched by the warmth it promised

I left quietly so as not to disturb the image she was building

And even then I swear she only noticed the empty space where I used to stand behind the lens
