The metal buildings loom around them, and Kurth is reminded of the dream from what seemed like ages ago - though it had only been a mere few nights. The wind blows through the empty streets and Kurth shivers, wondering why the dream had given him such thin clothes to work with in a world like this. Perhaps it was simply the idea that this was all he could find, he had no way of knowing.

He glances towards Cecilia beside him, her long green hair billowing in the wind that whips around them. As they walk, scanning the streets for... something, he isn’t exactly sure what, pebbles scatter among the cracked and broken streets. It feels haunting, the way there is truly nothing around them at all. Silence echoes louder than any sound they make, the quiet settling over the city like an uneasy blanket.

Kurth clears his throat, lifting his head from where it hung observing the road before them, focusing his gaze solely on his companion now. He smiles awkwardly, his entire being put off by the unsettling vibe the entire city emanates.

“So... what exactly are we looking for...?”

Once when she was little, as prone to sticking to shadows then as now, Katarina had heard the older children trading superstitions: you can never die in your dreams, for if you did, you wouldn’t ever wake up. 

“Uh...” A hand rises to her temple with a ginger touch, as if any amount of gentleness might alleviate the pounding in her skull. ...Well, it does somewhat seem to, in truth. Pushing herself up off of the ground, the mage cannot decide whether to marvel at the unbroken bones or the second shift in the arena. Both, she decides in the moment after, are not as important as ascertaining the status of her allies. 

Her head whips around, and she wobbles slightly-- does she? Or is it the ground that is shifting, just slightly? As though she stands on the underside of effulgence, shaded and unsteady -- before spying them at once... as well as the beast behind them. 

“Ce--” She coughs, forgotten smoke in her lungs. “Cecilia! Everyone! Look out!” 

Katarina attacks Poison of God: Chosen with Halahala! Roll = 6+6, hit! -3.5HP (Chosen 6.5/10) ; Katarina regains 1.5HP with Lifetaker (Katarina 6.5/10)  Poison of God: Chosen counters with Mauling Strike! The attack comes naturally this time, thin coils of smoke growing to smothering plumes that stick to the monster’s skin. There comes a quiet hiss, and on its heels a rush of wind as their foe surged forward, seeming almost to glide. 

Wings? On its feet? She has no chance to confirm, pushed stumbling backward by a vicious strike to her shoulder. Even as it makes its own retreat, Katarina feels a nameless sort of unease, as if the tremor of the impact had yet to leave her, still dancing within her bones. 

“W-watch out... It’s...” What, fast? They could see that; they didn’t need her to make a fool of herself stating the obvious. The once-tactician lapsed into shy silence, an arm braced to her stomach. “Gh...”

"Lilina!?"

Cecilia's usual composure is broken when Lilina enters the medical tent with puncture wounds to the shoulder and abdomen, no doubt inflicted by a volley of enemy arrows. (And yet they deliberately avoided any vital areas—this was an expert.)

She knew this event was supposed to be the simulation of a battle—back in Ostia, they had done such exercises many a time—but it does not stem the worry that seizes the instructor's heart upon seeing one of her dearest students harmed.

The mage general wraps her arms about the girl's shoulders, gently guiding her to a cot. "Come now, sit. Let's get these wounds healed..."

"If this were real, I'd be dead," she says with half a chuckle, echoing her own words from one of the earlier tactics lessons. Did she learn nothing? Her opponent was a professor so he at least knew where to hit so she wouldn't be too poor off, but she couldn't help but frown.

Lilina allows Cecilia to guide her as always and sits when prompted. The medics are quick to begin work and offer a bountiful of snacks and drinks.

Hands in her lap, she sniffles. "I am grateful for this opportunity, but I wished to last a little longer... I probably deserve a D... Or a F, even..."

If there’s one thing his travels have taught him, it’s that danger is the best deterrent. 

The dragon-infested keep of Dolhr, winding dungeons of grand Valentia, and tripped-up kitchen the Mechanic had sent him to all have two things in common: they keep out intruders, and Sirius has been there. He’s seen--no, experienced firsthand--the methods used to safeguard valuables, falling victim to them more times than he’d like to admit. And so, believing everyone’s lives to be valuable, he hatches a plan. He’ll use anything at his disposal to make their living situation impregnable. It may be in a sorry state, and he may only have the tins they eat from to work with, but Sirius is nothing if not scrappy. 

Firm hands fasten a collection of discarded cans to a rope. They serve as the base’s alarm system--clanging themselves together whenever someone walks over the tripwire set at the entrance. Creativity is not one of his strong suits, so the system is in plain sight once someone steps inside, but the hope is that it won’t be seen until it’s already been set off.

“Professor Cecilia,” he calls, his fingers pulling tight on the string and letting the cans hang, “how are you faring? I understand this was a... Strange request, but I can assure you, the threat of being attacked has been made all too real.” 

Recent events have noticeably shaken him. He is acting with greater caution, trusting their situation less and less. When control and foresight begin to slip from one’s fingers, it is often too late.

He stands now, walking from the alarms to the opposite side of the door. Doing a test run reveals that as soon as Sirius moves indoors, the cans are pulled together and their hollow, metal bodies sing. A soft smile creeps on his face at the result of his handiwork, before fading into something more apologetic when he turns to the professor--understanding that he interrupted her response.

What a fun dream!

T’is reminiscent of his foray into the world of books, teammates materializing with strange weapons and outfits, each looking about as clueless as the next. Azama can’t blame them. If he thinks they are unenlightened in the waking world, he very much doubts his subconscious mind will better vouch for their poor souls.

Another cursory look reveals he is blessed with familiar faces, it seems. (Mostly.)

Although he had berated his friends for their manners the last time, this time, well, it’s just a dream so it doesn’t matter! He foregoes introductions in favour of sidling up to his favourite student and his dear ol’ husband.

“Here we go again, eh, my love?” Leaning his head on Python’s shoulder, he sighs. “If only we could have met anew under more pleasant circumstances...”

He smiles blithely at miss Katarina - oh, she’s not off the hook, no - and, well.

Their opponent finds them before they find it. And it announces its arrival into the coliseum with a bitter wave of cold - and a seeming predetermined grudge, if the way it misses everyone but the monk is of any indication.

Well that’s incredibly rude. Azama (-2HP ->10/12HP) decides to return the favour, even if this is only a dream.

Closing the distance with his trusty axe, he gives a hearty swing (get it?) and wham! Connects solidly, though the beast seems more annoyed than hurt as it whips around and spits a freezing cold gust right in his face. Yeow!

"Remain vigilant, soldier!" Cecilia announces her arrival in a firm, authoritative tone, using the inflection she often did when commanding her troops. But if Forsyth were to turn over his shoulder, he would see the teasing smile playing on her features, the mage general humming lightly as she moves around to his front.

Gently, she taps his shoulder. "At ease. This mission is an important one indeed, but do remember to take breaks where you can. You mustn't grow so taut that you'll snap."

"Yes ma'am!" Forsyth straightens his posture, saluting vigilantly before his visitor reveals her identity and game. He's fallen right into it, really, and he's loathe to admit she may be right. "Ah...Lady Cecilia--erm, Cecilia. I shall do my best."

It's hard to remove honorifics from someone who's earned them, but at this point, Forsyth is failing this test so poorly he can imagine the red writing on his report card in vivid detail. He swallows, willing his muscles to loosen a bit.

"Vigilance is a virtue, but I can see what you are getting at." Steady breathing, now. Allow his posture to relax, his muscles no longer holding his shoulders up high. "I do appreciate your tutelage on the subject matter."

   “i hear you’re a fine teacher, and well, it would be a great help if you wouldn’t mind helping me understand some things about magic.” he at least seemed to grab her interest, which was more than he could say for others he’d approached. he had first tried to inquire with a teacher of the blue lions, but they had told him to stick to what he was good at. swinging a sword was all well and good, at least until you were met at the wrong end of a nasty spell. this he could attest to, eating several nasty blows from loptous followers. they couldn’t quite stop him, but it was a unique experience to feel the life drain from your body, or to feel the grip of the dead around your neck.

   perhaps he was never meant to pick up a tome, or even wield a magic weapon, but he couldn’t know without trying. with that in mind, he moved on from that professor and to onto one that had high praise from several students. if anyone could bring out his latent magic talent, it was sure to be her. “you see, it would be a great boon to be able to at least use a wind sword... that way i wouldn’t need to rely on mages or other archers to get the job done.” scáthach pulled out a worn wind sword from a scabbard, showing it to the woman for inspection.

   “this was given to me by a friend, but i haven’t ever been able to activate it... and so it’s something of a burden.” to further demonstrate, he held it high like he had seen patty and so many others do back home. only instead of fierce winds, there was empty expectations and disappointing nothingness. he huffed a sigh of defeat, placing the sword back in it’s scabbard and off to the side. despite knowing the outcome, it was no less disappointing to know he was so inept at something. 

   if he could do at least this much, he would be even more of an asset to lord seliph and his friends. no more would he be helpless against those scoundrels, no more would he have to feel the sting of their magic... no, like this, he would send it right back at them!

Wall-E Looks Different Than I Remember [Team 7 Iron Round]

It’s like in the moment that he blinks, they are suddenly within another arena, though slightly different from the last. More metallic, more confining. And the enemies across the way are giant beasts of metal, unlike anything Kurthnaga has ever seen before. Certainly, he has seen things this large, but never any behemoths of metal, of bolts and steels.

He still has his trusty hammer within his hands - he has grown quite used to the bulky weapon and would have been sad to see it part any time soon - but another axe has found itself attached to his hip. And...

Oh.

Oh. His knees feel rather weak as he realises the type of mount that he has now. The creature seems fairly content with the situation, compared to what he’d heard about- no, it was too painful to think about. With a shaky hand, he carefully runs his fingers along the beast’s scales, allowing a moment to get used to his new mount. He fiddles with his second axe, carefully not to scrape his fingers against its purple tinted edge. It seems to be inflicted with poison of some sort. He wasn’t sure if poison worked against these robots, but it was worth a shot. Anything was worth a shot to escape whatever sort of nightmare this was becoming.

Gripping the reins with pale knuckles, he speeds over to the largest robot of the bunch, the one that seems to be their leading. He stands, patting his dragon on top of the head, a silent communication between the two of them as some sort of kin, telling it to stay put for the moment as he leaps from its back to slam his axe into the giant metal beast’s head.

Kurthnaga activates Smash using Venin Axe! Roll 1d20+3= 10! Hit! Critical Damage! (6-3=3) | Alloy Arsenal: Bipedal HP= 17/20.

Stunned!

As he falls after his attack, he lands safely back on his mount’s back, and he gives it a soft, nervous pat as a reward for catching him. He glances up, realising the metal beast has been sent into some sort of state of being stunned and turns to his teammates, calling out his advice - though he couldn’t be certain how sound it was with no knowledge of these sorts of giant metal creatures.

“It seems to be stunned for the time being! I’d try to attack it now while it can’t attack back, and quickly! Who knows how much time we will have!”
