Vampire games are one of my weaknesses. Wonderful characters, quite interesting storytelling, cutscenes. Atmospheric soundtracks, colorful locations. (I just love statues in games!)

The year was 1932. A young girl stormed down Royal Street, visibly panicked, her stride broken only by the diligent interception of a police officer. Her story sounded a bit farfetched: tied up by two brothers, along with several other victims, and held captive so the brothers could drink their blood.

The girl claimed that she was only able to escape due to her captors’ carelessness in securing her ropes. Somewhat skeptical, the police agreed to follow her back to the home on the corner of Royal and St. Ann. Once the police and the girl arrived at the home, which was owned by the Carter brothers, they were horrified to find, as the girl had described, four other victims, half-dead, tied to chairs in one of the rooms.

All victims had their wrists wrapped with bandages, moist and stained with blood. Two more bodies wrapped in blankets were tucked away in yet another room. The unmistakable suffocating odor of death permeated the apartment.

It seemed the brothers left early each morning just before daybreak and returned every evening just after dark. Immediately upon their return, they would take the bandages off each of the captive’s wrists and, using a knife, reopen their wounds until blood flowed freely from the victims’ cuts. They caught the blood in cups from which they drank until their hunger was sated. The brothers would then redress the wounds with fresh bandages. They spoke very little and gave no concern for their victims’ well-being. Rather, the kidnapped were no more than a food source headed for certain death.

Unaware that the girl had escaped, John and Wayne Carter went about their routine as usual. Only this time, the police waited for the brothers to return. They were quickly apprehended, and upon their capture, confessed almost immediately, begging to be murdered. The brothers explained to authorities that they were, in fact, vampires and would, if released, have no option but to continue to kill, as their need for drinking blood was beyond their control. It’s said the brothers were tried as serial killers, convicted and eventually executed.

Oh, I found the story about the vampire and the funeral pyre.

It’s a Cossack (Russian/Ukrainian folk north of the Black and Caspian seas) legend.

The story tells of a Cossack man (just referred to as Cossack) traveling to meet up with his regiment. While on his journey, he happened to met with another man traveling to a nearby village, so he joined the stranger.

While the two were offered hospitality at the village, one of the women of the home/inn collapsed. The stranger left, and Cossack, having witnessed something not right, followed the stranger accusing him of being a vampire.

The two then got into a fist fight, with the stranger having the upper hand. The fight ended as roosters began to crow, and the stranger fled into a nearby grave. Cossack returned to the village to report what he saw and led the village men to the grave.

They dug the vampire, who was unable to move due to the light, up, built a funeral pyre, and used pitchforks to throw the vampire into it.

Once the vampire had been reduced to bones by the fire, creatures began to flee from within it. The story lists serpents, lizards, maggots, rats, and scavenger birds as the creatures that emerged. The villagers attempted to crush all of them and throw them back into the fire. This continued until only ashes remained. Now finished, the Cossack continued his journey.

But the story ends with a warning. If any of those creatures survived, the vampire would be able to regain strength and eventually return, but with a different appearance.

Or in Carmilla (1872) where a vampire spends all her time hanging out with a teenage girl and says that she loves her but it is a selfish love that will destroy her and then goes into her room at night to feed on her for months in a metaphorical and abusive lesbian awakening?

Or in Varney the Vampire (1847) where he sucks blood from women’s breasts?

Or maybe in the 1740s poem The Vampyre by Ossenfelder where the nerrator says that if the woman he’s into doesn’t respond to his advances he’s going to go get turned and then come into her room at night and feed on her which he sometimes calls “kissing” her?

Or maybe even in folklore where dead lovers were said to return as vampires and sleep with living women to produce human vampire hybrids?

You mean those times, my dude? Face it, there are many kinds of vampires but there have always been sexy ones.

New Orleans is considered by far one of the most haunted cities in America and of course the centrepiece of vampire myths. We know New Orleans as a vampiric city because of Anne Rice’s Novels and the Originals TV show, however is there some truth behind these myths? I had the pleasure to interview most likely the Crescent City’s most prominent vampire expert Jonathan Weiss. When you meet Jonathan you might recognise him for his cameo on the opening scene TV show the Origins.  He has been a purveyor of macabre history and professional tour guide in the French Quarter for 15+ years and without a doubt one of the most knowledgable people on the vampire legends of NOLA.

S: Thank you for joining us Jonathan, can you tell us why New Orleans is such an iconic city for vampires?

J:  Certainly, it’s the evocative ​writing of Anne Rice, and the others who’ve come after who’ve found the city’s alluring decay to be inspirational and an appropriate background for stories of those who eternally bring death, and yet never die, but I think it’s also the old European nature of our place.  It’s isolation was epic, and it’s dangers can never be fully explained, but even prior to the arrival of the French, the area had a bad reputation with the natives.  

S: What is the tale of John and Wayne Carter?

J: Two mysterious brothers who arrive prior to the Great Depression and find the city the perfect storm of time and place for hunting humans.  Their every act, from where they lived, to what they did for a living, to how they behaved was designed to get people, kill them, consume their blood, and dispose of the bodies afterwards.  ​

S: Tell us about the The Count St. Germain: “The man who knows everything and who never dies.”

J:​ The mysterious Comte de St. Germain...  I don’t know that anyone could TELL you things about le Comte.  They could tell you legends of him, and those go back centuries in recorded European documents, though he Is associated with a vampire killer who lived in the Quarter for more than a year, killed prostitutes, and consumed the blood in front of unsuspecting members of Society.  He vanished in 1903, though I know people who absolutely believe he’s still alive... ​

S: The Urseline Convent is known for its “Casket Girls”, what does that mean?

J:​ It’s a translation of Filles des Cassettes.  This is the name given to some of the early women of New Orleans, girls of good families lured across the ocean to a wretched hive of scum and villainy called La Nouvelle Orleans.  Their legend lives on in some of the oldest European-inspired vampire stories of New Orleans, and the mystery of what Was in the boxes that the court of France issued them so many centuries ago.​

S: Are there any other vampire legends in New Orleans you would like to share?

J: Oh, god, the survivors of the Carter brothers - rather intense and horrific.  Experiences friends of mine have had, that I’ve had, where we can’t remember the appearance of a bizarre stranger, missing time on the streets of the old city, events where All the animals on a street start acting entirely out of their character and together at the same time, murders unsolved that have all the hallmarks of someone very much in the know not only of Catholic symbolism, but also of old vampire folklore, numbers of disappearances very much out of keeping with the small population of our city, and on and on....

S: What is one of the scariest things you have seen in New Orleans?

J: The sheer amount of absolute and sincere fear that many of the old families have for certain locations, certain times, certain weathers.  It’s hard for modern people to wrap their minds about what New Orleans Truly is - it’s something to be experienced, not explained.  But keep in mind, this is not Your world, no matter how boutiqued we’ve been made.  This is a city of masques, remember.  Sometimes what you think is a smile is really just a baring of teeth.​

Nerd Chat: Vampire Legends: The True Story of Kisilova

Time Played: 3 hours

This was a fairly fun puzzle game. I’m new to this style of game and for a first game I could have done worse. 

I chose to play on regular mode because I’m a beginner. Which of course means I probably got through the game much faster as a result of sparkly hints while playing. 

You play as an investigator of some rather intriguing murders. The plot is pretty basic you and your partner explore and walk around until your discover what is going on. 

The puzzles had enough variety and were challenging enough to keep me interested. I had to skip a couple because I got stuck and I didn’t want to stop progressing (that shell one.....IDK). But generally I think the puzzles are pretty beatable. There is a variety of puzzle types: shifting around puzzle pieces, mirrors and light and of course hidden objects. My one issue with the hidden object is there were a couple items that I didn’t know what they were. So, I just ended up clicking random objects in the hope that I would click the right one. 

The voice acting was pretty subpar. But the fact that it did have voice acting was a bit of a surprise for me. 

As far as visuals.....they were fine. Some of the background images were great. Especially in the bonus chapter. Those were just a little spooky especially in contrast to the earlier visuals. 

Honestly the main game was was just fair. But the bonus chapter is where this game got points for me. It was much more entertaining than the original chapter. But there is also less to guide you through the game. 

I don’t think I would recommend it for the 10 dollar price due to it being pretty standard with the plotline and fairly short. But if it was on sale it might be worth picking up to get to the bonus chapter alone.
