Oughh time to redesign the guy ever!

I wanted to put all my thoughts into one place when it came to this redesign so oops all yaps below!! (Plus some extra sketches)

Ok so a lot of my ideas here are from me pushing the same thoughts from my previous Moon design even further! I liked a lot about his last redesign but there were still issues that I hoped to amend within this attempt!

Firstly—colors! I heavily gravitate towards more whimsical vintage celestial aesthetics so I knew the brighter blues of his og look weren’t what I wanted to go with!! But oh my days was it difficult to balance out the colors without making them feel ‘too grey’. Also just streamlining the palette to be more contained without looking limited! The hardest part with this design color wise was honestly the hip/neck ruffle.

Originally, I went for a blue on blue look, but the issue with that is just that it makes the design lack a lot of color diversity. Monochrome palettes are a favorite of mine but with the amount of detail I was going for I really needed to have solid blocks of color to not make him look too busy. I experimented with a more teal-ish dark blue but I felt it started to clash with the purple undertone of his casing and the generally more cool tones of his main fabrics. It was simultaneously  sticking out like a sore thumb while ALSO blending in too much with the rest of his clothing. (Not sure how that even happens) ANYWAYS! I tried out different ideas like using an off white and even tried the more game accurate plum-ish burgundy but I just didn’t feel the vibe no matter how much I tried to push it.

So instead of adding a new color I just decided to implement the highlight color for the darker side of his casing— and it worked! I wasn’t sure about it at first but adding the gold trim really made me enjoy it more!! I also just made the gold within his design more saturated. My previous design tried to go for a ‘cold gold’ but it ended up just being hyper desaturated. I think this look better now!!

As for the actual physical outfit changes— I revisited the split look from before! Though I made each fabric a bit more defined. One thing I always struggled with was getting the stars on his pants to not look… ‘spacey’. (Ironic wording I know) What I mean by that is that I often felt the actual star pattern looked more like a random overlay and not actually sown into his clothing. (Irl patterned fabric may look random but it’s the same repeated placement over and over across a yard of cloth! It has structure in its perceived chaos!)

I think the way I draw stars now greatly contributes to lessening that feeling as I make them more pronounced and sharp! Though speaking of star shapes I decided to go with a mix of 4, 6, and 8 pointed stars! Those are just my favorite shapes and I will overuse them to the ends of the earth LOL! The subtle lines below definitely help with keeping the stars in a set pattern, while also calling back to Sun’s look! (I will redesign him soon.. maybe… eventually!)

Beyond the stars I also limited the slashing to only one of the main fabrics. I think previously the slashing suffocated the starry pattern and took up its space! I also decided to change the more floral inspired print on the arm portions of the leg-of-mutton sleeves to be a textured quilting! What can I say, I like quilting and I’m picky with florals. It also happens to match the grippy texture of his slipper’s soles while also being reminiscent of a quilted blanket! Everything else is more or less a simplification of previous ideas. Slippers became actual slip ons, ribbon designs were reduced to one color with a star at the end, and the waist piece got a more unified pattern. (I also opened up the hip ruffle as before it connected across the top! Now it feels less awkward!)

Uhh last thing to mention would probably be changes to his actual base casing/appearance? Something I kept flip flopping between was the question of “how do I depict his face”. I’ve been wanting to ‘elongate’ his general features more but I was having issues figuring out what I preferred? I went back and forth for a bit and I think I found a good compromise of sharp but not too much so that his face ends up looking more humanoid? He doesn’t have the flat sideways nose that the og dca has but it’s not completely straight out like normal either. It’s at a weird angle lol!

I moved the moon crescents on his shoes and put them on the outer sides of his heels, mirroring the look on the backs of his hands! The hand thing is a pretty common design choice but hey, it looks super cute!! So I see why it’s so well beloved! :] Ofc I also added the hand prints to his chest (which go to his back and hook) as I think it’s a very interesting visual storytelling moment with his design. Same reason he has the scratches on his eye! There are VERY FAINT lines on the DCA’s face in game and I find the headcanon of those being caused by Sun clawing at his face while changing into Moon to be such an interesting idea!!

I think that’s it regarding my notes on his design? I’ve rambled long enough! Instead have some recent doodles of the DCA (however sparse they are)!

[Fractured Empire Vanilla au]

° One too many kidnappings

A bit after the events of Sonic advance 2, the Doctor decided to capture Vanilla and Cream again. Being a bit more discreet about it. But Vanilla was prepared this time. Hiding some hairpins in her dress and fur.

° Divergence

While Sonic was occupied by fighting Metal Sonic. Eggman took Cream and put the bunny inside of a new badnik. Vanilla tried to free herself in time but unfortunately she didn't know she was too late. However, she knew what to do. While Eggman was distracted by the screen. She picked up a nearby pipe from its workshop and jumped high before striking him hard on the head. She wouldn't stop until he wasn't moving anymore. She found an Eggman outfit and put the top on. With the cycle broken, she would need to keep it going for a few more rounds.

° An alien comfort

Shadow was the first on the scene after the act. After a chaos control, he ended up right in front of Eggman's corpse and a bloodied crying mother rabbit holding her daughter. Being the most experienced in grief, he had to help Vanilla come to terms. Even if he would witness her desperation first hand.

° The first to know

Unknowingly from the Doctor, Tails had managed to access the cameras and saw what had unfolded. Being pretty shaken up. He couldn't say to Sonic what had happened for now.

° Desperate mesure

Vanilla tried to bring her daughter back by any means necessary but unfortunately, it didn't work. Robotisation needed a living being and there was no way she would put her daughter in a badnik. Though she did find some plans for Gemerl. Finding some scrapped parts of Metal. She had an idea. Contacting Tails via the Eggnet. Asking him for help. The fox agreed and went to the main base to help a grieving mother.

° Directive change

Metal had managed to stall Sonic for a while. These upgrades came in handy after all. But he wasn't receiving any more input from the doctor. So he flew back to the base. Being damaged and low on battery. He saw the corpse of the Doctor laying in the central command room with Vanilla beside him. He went for the attack but was neutralized via a shutdown command by Vanilla using a pre-recorded audio from Eggman. Metal would be sent to the repair bay with his secondary directive active being the continuation of the Eggman empire. He would later flee the base to follow the directive once he was repaired.

° A new start

Vanilla wouldn't let this empire rust away. In fact, she found the very first design of the amusement park Eggman wanted to make. She would use it as her basis to reform this empire into a force of joy instead of terror. She knew that it would take time but she was determined to do it. Starting with the badniks. Freeing the animals inside and replacing them with electric motors. The animals that were already in bad condition or that couldn't walk or fly were offered to stay in their badniks.

° Same daughter

Tails helped in the creation of Metal Cream. With inputs from Vanilla. She gave it free will and most of her personality. This probably was a bad way of coping but right now it was for the best. She made two models. A replica of Cream and a more metal shaped build to help around. She would be able to switch bodies when on a charging station. Her round extremities could hide claws. Bowties and rubans were tied to her metal body. The smaller version even got dressed in Cream's clothes.

° Clothing modification

Vanilla tailor-made the suit to fit her. Better to be presentable for what would be coming. This would have to do for now. Later versions would have a more Bordeaux color instead of the aggressive bright red of the original suit. (This is your cue for anyone to be inspired to make some designs for her! ^_^)

° New badnik

A rabbit badnik was made using an electric motor and basic functions. It was let loose in the world as a way to hint at a change.

° News announcement

With metal sonic out to reform the Eggman empire. Vanilla contacted Tails so he could gather everyone so she could break the news down to them. Making sure Sonic was away destroying unused Eggman bases. She would take over the Empire and make a giant amusement park in honor of her daughter. As well as a Chao preservation zone. Of course everyone was very sad to learn that Cream was dead. It was bittersweet to learn Eggman was dead. Omega however was quite furious this rabbit stole his kill. To make up for that, Vanilla sent his corpse to him. So he can riddle it with holes.

° House preservation

The original house of Vanilla and Cream was preserved. To keep everything as it was from that fateful day. Large glass panels were put all around. Only friends were allowed inside for now.

° Errands to make

With Sonic still thinking Eggman was alive. Vanilla sent him very far to destroy peripheral bases that would then be stripped down to smelt and recycle for the amusement park project. She and Tails finished the Gemerl program. Making the improved gizoid a bodyguard for Vanilla. Copies of him were made in Cream's dress color scheme. They would become the 'home' guards. Making sure no one would interfere with the mother rabbit's plans.

° First park is open for everyone to see

The public was weary of it but since there wasn't anything nefarious, they enjoyed it! The Eggman faces had been replaced with a Vanilla icon.

Vanilla(ish) DoL AU!

Bailey is a gruff but fair caretaker. He’s not exactly a father figure but he’ll pick you up from soccer games and stuff.

Quinn is the mayor of a poor rural town and there just aren’t enough funds to keep the orphanage running. So the current plan is to shut it down and send the kids to one’s in other cities farther away but that’ll mean splitting them all up and moving away from their hometown.

The orphans aren’t a fan of the idea so they approach Bailey with the idea to start working for their own rent. He’s not a big fan of the idea but their persistence won him over since he was an orphan in the same place.

Eden is as well. He’s a recluse who has Gwylan buy him things from the city that he can’t get himself. He still prefers the seclusion but does enjoy it if you visit him and run errands for him.

Leighton is trickier. He’ll be the headmaster who doesn’t get why the students only respond to corporal punishment.

Darryl is the better version of Briar so they’ll still be rivals but Briar’s security matches his but his club caters to people with harder and unusual kinks.

Remy is concerned about how Alex manages a huge farm by himself so he stops by like a overly concerned neighbor. He appreciates you helping Alex so he’ll give you lessons on farm stuff for free.

Wren is his lazy security guard with a weakness for blackjack. I really feel like he could be Whitney’s older brother or uncle. The one who would let you try alcohol but also make fun of you when you sputter.

Avery is an elite who donates money when he can since he’s part of the same generation as Bailey and Eden. He gets along with Eden just fine but doesn’t really mesh with Bailey. He also has his kinks and you find him on fetlife and make him your sugar daddy who transitions to a dd/lg daddy

November 20, 2014:

  The wooden floors of the decaying tower creaked under the presence of it's inhabitant. A lanky man draped in layers of robes, and sporting a pointed hat made his way between cauldrons, breweries and stacks of chests piled in the corners of the tiny room atop the tower. His hands are shaking as he finishes a batch of redstone soup. Everything was to be put into this project.

He phases through the floors to the rooms below, coming upon the altar that has fueled him for months. The golden symbol under his feet sparks, dimming more each passing day. He places the soup down along with other miscellaneous items needed. He takes colored chalk from his pockets, scribbling symbol after symbol on the floor. The red chalk sparks, and embers fizzle out. The yellow chalk shines like gold. The purple seems to fade in and out of existence.

Gunpowder, crushed bones, tongue of dog, and other offerings are laid out in each colored ring. He pours the soup on the ground in odd movements, "Some soup-" he says. The witch removes a vial from one of his robes, shaking the substance into the palm of his hand.

"And a pinch of vanilla."

The lights dim. The floors shift. A dream catcher rocks on the wall. The man takes out his mystic branch. Cackling is heard from members of his coven, who seem to emerge out of thin air. One puts a thin hand on his shoulder, "Are you ready Mike?" Mike nods his head slowly, using his branch to form patterns in the air.

"Let's get on with it then." she says as Mike finishes out his barrier spell. The coven joins hands, and their seer stone rolls across the floor to the offerings, glistening. They begin...

The seer stones light grows brighter and it rocks on the floor. Then in a flash of light, they were gone.
