"i didn't know putting in a catheter would feel that nerve-racking."
amber shook her head with a small laugh.
the two of you sat side by side in the nurses' office, finally taking your much-awaited lunch break.
you were absolutely starving. the first bite of your meal disappeared almost embarrassingly fast. you had come in for your shift on an empty stomach, unable to bring yourself to eat that morning.
every time you tried, your appetite vanished. your mind kept wandering back to that night. to the party, to the conversation at the bar, to the way varka had looked at you.
it turned out emotional exhaustion was just as effective as any diet. unfortunately, your stomach had decided it was done paying the price for your overthinking.
"it's different every time," you replied. "there's a difference between inserting one for a male patient and a female patient. it's different when the patient is conscious... and different again when they're unconscious."
amber nodded enthusiastically, quickly scribbling your words into the little notebook she always carried around to keep track of patient vitals, reminders, and the countless things she learned during each shift.
you couldn't help but smile to yourself. you weren't entirely sure anything you'd said was worth writing down. then again, you remembered being exactly like her when you were still a student.
every tip from your seniors felt like something you'd never find in a textbook, and every piece of advice seemed worth holding onto.
"i don't know if it's rude to ask, but... how was your day off? i was here the day before yesterday, but my instructor said it's your day off."
amber looked at you expectantly before taking another bite of her lunch.
you paused for a moment, thinking about how to answer.
"it was..." a small smile found its way onto your face. "...eventful."
"good eventful or bad eventful?"
you let out a quiet laugh. "...both, i guess."
you’d rather not dwell on the details. not when just thinking about them was enough to make your chest feel heavy all over again.
amber seemed to notice the subtle change in your expression. she simply nodded, deciding not to pry any further.
“that’s fair,” she said with a small smile. “as long as you had fun.”
you returned the smile, grateful she didn’t press the subject.
apparently, fun was an understatement.
there were awkward moments, sure. moments where you and varka happened to be standing in the same room and suddenly found the ceiling, the floor, or literally anything else more interesting than each other.
there were stolen glances, too. ones you pretended not to notice. ones he probably pretended not to take.
but somehow, despite all of that, you actually had fun.
you laughed with your friends until your cheeks hurt. you listened to lisa ramble about some book you’d probably never read. you watched rosaria absolutely destroy everyone at pool. you even let navia drag you around the house to admire every ridiculously expensive thing wriothesley owned.
for a few hours, you forgot about everything.
the years you’d spent apart.
or, at least, you tried to.
because the night had been going perfectly well… until it wasn’t. there were things that happened that night that none of you had planned for.
things that weren’t supposed to happen. things that certainly weren’t part of wriothesley’s little welcome-home party.
and somehow, you had a feeling that whatever happened next was going to make avoiding varka a whole lot harder.
“what was that about?” it was jean who asked the moment you reached the couch where she and lisa were sitting.
both of them looked at you with matching expressions of concern. it didn’t take a genius to figure out why.
from where they were seated, they’d had a perfect view of your entire interaction with varka. from the moment he sat beside you to the moment you walked away.
you let out a quiet sigh as you sank into the empty spot beside them.
“i’m not sure.” it was the only honest answer you could give.
lisa exchanged a knowing glance with jean before gently bumping your shoulder.
“he talked to you first, didn’t he?”
you stared ahead, watching the guests mingle across the room.
you laughed softly, though there wasn’t much humor in it.
“the usual..” and by usual you meant the conversations that circled around the truth without ever daring to touch it, the stolen glances that lingered a second too long, the awkward silences that somehow said more than words ever could, the questions neither of you had the courage to answer honestly.
pretending everything was fine, pretending years of hurt could be buried beneath polite smiles and meaningless small talk.
pretending the two of you hadn’t once meant the world to each other. at least.. to you.
neither lisa nor jean had a response to that.
because they both knew the truth. beneath all the avoidance and the years you’d spent convincing everyone—including yourself—that you’d gotten over your silly little crush on him.
you still cared. perhaps far more than you’d ever allow yourself to admit.
jean lightly nudged lisa with her elbow after the latter leaned in to whisper something into her ear.
lisa pulled back with an innocent look, blinking at jean as if she couldn’t understand what was wrong.
jean only gave her a pointed look. lisa frowned, clearly convinced her idea wasn’t nearly as outrageous as jean was making it out to be.
despite jean’s look of disapproval, lisa asked you what was on her mind right away.
“(name)… can i ask you something?”
lisa’s voice had lost its usual playful tone. the sudden seriousness in it caught you off guard.
without realizing it, you straightened your posture and shifted on the couch, giving her your full attention. your eyes flickered between her and jean, who sat shoulder to shoulder beside her.
jean offered you a small, reassuring smile, though it did little to ease the growing curiosity in your chest.
“uhhh.. sure,” you answered cautiously. “what is it?”
lisa crossed one leg over the other before narrowing her eyes at you, looking far too serious for someone who was probably about to ask something ridiculous.
“we’ve all been friends for a long time now.”
she motioned between herself, jean, and you.
“we’ve seen every side of each other.”
you quietly nodded, waiting for her point.
“for instance…” she began, counting on her fingers.
“you’ve witnessed my countless relationships and my equally countless breakups.”
you let out a small laugh.
“you’ve seen navia get sent to the principal’s office for violating the school dress code.”
“i still think the skirt wasn’t that short,” navia defended from across the room.
her voice carried over the music just as she made her way back toward the couch, drink in hand and an unapologetic grin on her face.
the three of you burst into laughter.
“it was definitely that short,” lisa shot back, pointing an accusing finger at her.
navia gasped dramatically. “i was expressing myself!”
“you were expressing the school’s dress code violations,” jean deadpanned.
lisa continued as though she hadn’t heard her.
“you’ve seen jean and her ex-boyfriend being all smoochy in the hallway—ow!”
jean jabbed her in the side with her elbow.
“okay, calm down!” lisa laughed, rubbing the offended spot before continuing.
“and you’ve seen rosaria have a full-blown existential crisis after finding out she wasn’t graduating with us.”
you remembered sitting with rosaria until nearly dawn that night, reminding her that graduating a little later didn’t make her any less capable.
thinking back now… those memories almost felt like they belonged to another lifetime.
“i feel as if you’re all backstabbing me.”
she had wandered back from the game room as she looked between the four of you with narrowed eyes.
“i leave for, what, fifteen minutes?” she raised an eyebrow.
“and suddenly i’m the topic of conversation?”
lisa smiled innocently. “we’re reminiscing.”
“you’re exposing us,” rosaria corrected dryly, dropping onto the armrest of the couch beside you.
“it’s called character development,” lisa argued.
that earned another round of laughter from everyone, even rosaria, whose lips betrayed her with the smallest hint of a smile before she took a sip from her drink.
“as i was saying…” lisa turned her attention back to you, crossing one leg over the other as she studied you with that suspicious little smile of hers.
“you’ve seen almost every part of us, (name).” she gestured toward the others as if presenting evidence in court.
“you’ve seen us at our worst, our most embarrassing, our most pathetic…”
“what? i’m making a point.”
you couldn’t help but laugh quietly. but then lisa’s expression softened.
“but when do we get to see at least a little bit of you?”
the laughter slowly died down.
she leaned closer, resting her chin against her palm.
“you always listen to everyone else’s problems. you always know what’s happening in our lives. you remember the little things.”
her eyes narrowed playfully.
“but whenever someone asks about you?” she pointed directly at you.
“you give us the most boring answer known to mankind.”
navia nodded beside you. “she’s not wrong.”
“traitors,” you muttered.
you looked between the four of them, suddenly feeling far more exposed than you had expected.
for once, you didn’t know what to say.
no witty comeback. no excuse. not even a simple “i’m fine.”
you just sat there, staring at them as the weight of their question slowly settled over you.
maybe not tonight, maybe not in this exact way, but you knew it was bound to happen eventually.
you’d spent years letting your friends into every little corner of your life while keeping your own doors firmly shut. you listened to their stories—their heartbreaks, their stupid decisions, their dreams and fears and everything in between.
and whenever it was your turn?
you’d change the subject. you’d laugh it off. you’d tell them you were tired. you’d tell them work was keeping you busy.
anything that meant you didn’t have to talk about what was really going on. and suddenly, sitting there with all four of them looking at you with nothing but concern in their eyes.
you realized how unfair it had been.
they’d always made room for you.
maybe it was time you finally did the same for them.
“ladies! you all having fun?”
and, as if the universe itself had decided you had said enough for one night, wriothesley suddenly appeared beside the couch.
everyone turned their attention toward him, some greeting him with smiles and a few laughs.
everyone except lisa. she was still looking at you, her expression hadn’t changed in the slightest.
if anything, she looked even more determined now.
you could practically hear what she was saying without her having to open her mouth.
you gave her a tiny shake of your head.
lisa only raised an eyebrow, “we’ll talk later.”
you sighed quietly and turned your attention toward wriothesley, hoping he’d somehow rescue you from the interrogation.
“is the dance floor open already?” navia asked, her eyes lighting up at the thought.
“it is, actually. just opened a few minutes ago.”
navia’s face immediately brightened. “finally!”
she stood from the couch and reached for jean’s hand, practically pulling her up with her.
“come on! we’re wasting precious dancing time.”
jean laughed, stumbling slightly as she got to her feet.
“navia, we haven’t even finished our drinks.”
“you can drink later. dance first.”
rosaria shook her head from her spot on the couch.
“you’re going to regret that in ten minutes.”
“then i’ll regret it while dancing.”
lisa laughed, finally tearing her eyes away from you.
she stood and stretched her arms above her head before looking at you.
before you could protest, navia had already grabbed one of your hands.
and just like that, whatever answer you’d been trying to give lisa was forgotten.
the dance floor was packed.
people filled every inch of the space, moving along to the music beneath the warm glow of the hanging lights. the bass thumped through the floor, loud enough that you could feel it in your chest.
navia, of course, looked completely at home. she grabbed your hands and pulled you further into the crowd, laughing as jean and lisa followed behind.
“come on!” navia shouted over the music.
you laughed, barely able to keep up with her. for once, you didn’t think about work or what will happen tomorrow.
and, most importantly, you didn’t think about varka.
at least, that was what you told yourself.
because somewhere across the crowded room, a familiar pair of eyes had already found you.
you decided to let yourself loose a little. just for tonight.
varka shouldn’t be the reason you couldn’t have fun.
you’d spent years letting him take up space in your head, even when he wasn’t there.
you weren’t going to let him ruin this, too.
so you stopped overthinking.
you laughed louder, you moved with the music, you let navia drag you around the dance floor while lisa and jean cheered you on.
for a few precious minutes, you actually forgot.
forgot about the awkward conversation at the bar.
forgot about the woman in the ivory dress.
forgot about the way varka had looked at you when you walked away.
but even as you tried to lose yourself in the music, one thought stubbornly remained.
you hated how he could still cloud your mind after all these years. how, no matter how hard you tried to move on, some part of you was still looking for him in every crowded room.
and what better way to drown out those thoughts than to drown yourself in alcohol?
you had barely stepped away from the dance floor when wriothesley appeared beside you, a glass already in his hand.
“you look like you need this.”
you eyed the drink before looking at him, “what is it?”
“something that’ll make you stop thinking for a while.”
you couldn’t help but laugh, “you know me that well?”
“not really,” he admitted, offering you the glass. “but i’ve seen that look before.”
you hesitated for a moment before taking it from him, “thanks, wrio.”
one drink became two, two became three and.. ten? you lost count.
you just wanted your head to be quiet. you wanted, even for a few hours, to stop thinking about him.
about what he’d said, about what he hadn’t.
“dance with me.” you suddenly blurted out before thinking.
before he could say anything else, you grabbed his hand and pulled him toward the dance floor.
the song playing was upbeat and ridiculously catchy, the kind that made it impossible to stand still. the crowd was already bouncing along to the beat, lights flashing across the room as everyone shouted over the music.
wriothesley laughed as you started dancing beside him.
“i thought you were supposed to be the shy one.”
“you’re doing a terrible job proving that.”
you rolled your eyes, laughing as you moved closer.
he followed your rhythm easily, one hand finding your waist as the two of you danced together. it wasn’t some graceful, perfectly coordinated routine.
you didn’t care who saw the two of you.
you knew wriothesley wouldn’t make a move on you. so you let yourself enjoy it.
you laughed as he matched your movements, the two of you moving with the beat as the music blared through the room.
lisa and jean were dancing together nearby, laughing as they tried to keep up with each other’s ridiculous moves.
rosaria had already disappeared toward the game room again, probably intent on finishing whatever pool match she’d abandoned earlier.
and navia was somewhere in the middle of a group of people, dancing like she owned the entire floor.
you turned back to wriothesley, raising your glass with a grin.
“this is what my dad meant.”
wriothesley laughed. “i have no idea what you’re talking about.”
you laughed again, letting the music carry you along.
you didn’t notice the figure standing across the room.
watching, a little too closely.
but wriothesley noticed him. his eyes briefly wandered past your shoulder, landing on a familiar face across the dance floor.
varka. his friend. his comrade.
and judging by the look on his face, he wasn’t exactly enjoying the view.
wriothesley almost laughed. the man was practically burning holes through him with his stare.
his brows were drawn together, his jaw set, and the hand holding his whiskey looked just a little too tense.
and every time wriothesley’s hand settled at your waist, varka’s expression somehow got worse.
well. that was interesting.
wriothesley looked back at you.
you were completely oblivious.
you were smiling, laughing, moving to the music like you hadn’t spent years carrying some invisible weight on your shoulders. you looked happy.
and perhaps that was exactly what bothered varka the most.
wriothesley caught varka’s eyes again. for a second, neither of them looked away.
there was no need for words. varka’s glare said enough.
wriothesley’s lips twitched. he wasn’t even doing anything.
well… not intentionally, anyway.
still, there was something almost amusing about watching his usually jolly and composed friend look like he was one bad song away from marching straight across the dance floor.
wriothesley finally broke eye contact, turning his attention back to you.
“you’re having fun, huh?”
you grinned. “is it obvious?.”
“yeah,” he chuckled. “can i ask you something though?”
you groaned. “what’s with everyone asking me questions today?”
you narrowed your eyes at him, already suspicious.
"are you and varka..." he trailed off, glancing past you for just a second.
you didn't need to follow his gaze to know who he was looking at. "why are you bringing him up?"
he shrugged, playing it off. "thought you two were close, is all."
you let out a small laugh, though there wasn't much humor behind it.
your eyes dropped to the drink in your hand. then, almost too casually, you added, "he has a girlfriend already."
wriothesley's brows lifted. there was something about the way you said it that made him pause. like you'd already convinced yourself that whatever the two of you once were had no place in your life anymore.
you nodded, taking another sip.
"yeah." you smiled, turning your attention back to the music.
"so there's really nothing to talk about."
wriothesley didn't answer.
because across the dance floor, varka was still staring at the two of you.
and judging by the look on his face...
you were drunk as the gods of greek mythology your mother used to tell you about when you were young—reckless, untouchable, and far too lost in the moment to remember what consequences waited for you when the night was over.
you didn't know what came over you. maybe it was the alcohol. maybe it was the music pounding through your chest, the warmth of the crowded room, or the way everything seemed a little softer around the edges.
or maybe you were simply tired of thinking.
tired of remembering. tired of carrying the same person around in your head like some cruel little secret you could never quite get rid of.
you finished the last drop in your glass and set it somewhere behind you, completely forgetting where you'd put it almost immediately.
you wrapped your arms around wriothesley's neck.
wriothesley visibly froze. his eyes widened for half a second before his hands instinctively found your waist, holding you steady as you swayed with the music.
you weren't seducing him, nor were you trying to make him think anything. you just wanted to forget. wanted to get varka out of your head, even if only for one night.
you thought maybe the alcohol would do it.
you thought maybe the music would.
and apparently, even having wriothesley this close couldn't chase the thoughts away.
because there you were, arms around his neck, cheek nearly brushing his shoulder, and somehow—your mind still found its way back to him.
you let out a quiet, frustrated breath. wriothesley's grip tightened slightly, just enough to keep you from stumbling.
varka had been trying not to look. trust me, he really had.
he'd spent the last several minutes pretending to listen to the conversation beside him, nursing the same glass of whiskey while his eyes kept betraying him.
your arms were wrapped around his neck, your body swaying slightly with the music as wriothesley's hands rested firmly around your waist, keeping you from losing your balance.
something in varka's chest tightened. his jaw clenched.
he knew he wouldn't take advantage of you, especially when you were clearly drunk. but that didn't make the sight any easier to swallow.
he set his glass down. then he walked across the room. wriothesley noticed him before you did.
his eyes flicked toward varka, and for a moment, the two men simply stared at each other.
there was something unspoken in the silence.
perhaps even a challenge.
varka's gaze eventually dropped to you.
you looked completely exhausted, your eyes half-lidded from the alcohol.
you lifted your head slightly.
wriothesley's brows rose. "you sure?"
"yeah." his answer came too quickly.
wriothesley looked between the two of you, seemingly weighing the situation. then he glanced down at you.
"do you want him to take you home?"
you stared at varka for a moment, trying to make sense of the question through the haze in your head.
for once, there was no teasing smile, no confident expression. just something strangely careful in his eyes.
you didn't get to finish when varka stepped a little closer, though he stopped himself before reaching for you.
"you've had enough for tonight." his voice was gentle. hearing him say it made your chest ache.
he sighed quietly and finally stepped back. "alright."
his eyes met varka's. "get her home safe."
and as wriothesley released his hold on you, you felt the sudden absence of warmth around your waist.
you remembered varka’s hand finding yours as he guided you through the crowd. everything felt hazy.
the music, the lights, the voices blending together until they became nothing more than distant noise.
your friends called your name somewhere behind you. you turned your head slightly, trying to see them through the blur.
“i’ve got her,” you heard varka say. his voice was steady. certain.
the kind of voice you remembered from years ago, back when hearing him say those words had made you feel safe without even having to think about it.
his fingers tightened gently around yours as he led you through the crowd.
you didn’t know where he was taking you. you didn’t ask. you simply followed.
stepping outside of wrio’s home, the cool night air brushed against your skin, making you shiver.
varka opened the passenger door of his volvo v60 for you.
you frowned at him, trying to focus. “i’m not that drunk.”
he gave you a look as he did your seatbelt, catching the faint smell of his perfume.
you immediately looked away.
he made sure you were settled before closing the door and walking up to the driver’s seat.
the ride to your house was quiet. not that you were expecting anything different.
the only sounds filling the car were the low hum of the engine, the tires brushing against the pavement, and the occasional turn signal breaking through the silence.
you rested your head against the window, watching the city lights blur past your eyes.
everything felt hazy, dreamlike.
but even through the alcohol clouding your thoughts, you could still feel it.
it sat between the two of you like an unwelcome third passenger.
you could feel it every time varka’s hands tightened around the steering wheel.
every time you caught him glancing at you from the corner of his eye.
every time you almost said something and swallowed it back.
you shifted in your seat, pulling the jacket you didn’t know when he placed on you, a little closer around yourself.
“you okay?” you finally asked. your voice was quiet.
another stretch of silence.
then, almost under your breath, you murmured,
his grip on the steering wheel tightened. “so are you.”
the question slipped out quietly, almost swallowed by the hum of the engine.
varka’s eyes remained on the road. for a moment, he didn’t answer.
you watched the side of his face, trying to read something—anything—from his expression.
you frowned. “you’re lying.”
a quiet breath left him, almost a laugh, but there was nothing amused about it.
“then why are you so quiet?”
his fingers tightened around the steering wheel. because how was he supposed to explain it?
that he’d spent the entire night watching you laugh with everyone else.
that he’d watched you dance with wriothesley.
that he’d seen your arms around his friend’s neck and had to convince himself he had no right to feel anything about it.
instead, he simply shook his head.
you stared at him for a few seconds, then laughed sarcastically.
“you always say that. classic varka excuse.”
that made him glance at you.
your eyes were heavy with alcohol, but there was something painfully familiar in the way you looked at him.
for a second, neither of you spoke. then you looked away.
varka’s hands went still against the steering wheel.
you probably didn’t even realize you’d said it. but he did.
the words came out slurred, barely louder than a whisper.
your head was still resting against the window, eyes half-lidded, your thoughts tangled somewhere between the alcohol and the memories you’d spent years trying to bury.
“why’d you leave?” you repeated, slower this time.
there was something almost childlike about the question, but it wasn’t childish. varka knew you had every reason to ask him that.
like the years had fallen away, leaving behind the girl who had once trusted him with everything.
varka looked back at the road.
he’d imagined this conversation a hundred times.
never with you drunk beside him, your voice trembling with questions you’d probably regret asking in the morning.
the car fell silent again.
you turned your head toward him, studying his profile through blurry eyes.
“you didn’t even say goodbye.”
varka’s expression faltered. “…i know.”
“and you never came back.”
his grip on the wheel tightened until his knuckles paled.
you blinked. “…then why didn’t you?”
varka didn’t answer immediately.
the city lights passed over his face, illuminating it for a second before leaving him in shadow again.
when he finally spoke, his voice was barely above a whisper.
you didn’t even realize you were crying. the tears had slipped down your cheeks so quietly that you only noticed when one reached the corner of your lips.
you wiped it away lazily, almost confused by the dampness beneath your fingertips.
of course he didn’t. he never did.
even after all these years, he still had a way of standing right in front of the questions without ever giving you an answer.
you let out a small, shaky laugh.
“you didn’t even answer me.”
his eyes flickered toward you before returning to the road.
you stared at him through tear-blurred eyes. “then why are you apologizing?”
you turned your face toward the window again, watching the city lights smear into golden streaks.
“i waited for you, you know…”
your voice cracked. “and you never came back.”
his hands tightened around the steering wheel as he fought to keep his eyes on the road. because he had no excuse that would make those years disappear.
so all he could give you was the one thing he’d been carrying with him for years.
and that only made you cry harder.
varka’s chest tightened when he realized you’d fallen asleep crying.
your breathing had evened out, but the tear stains remained on your cheeks, quiet evidence of everything you’d tried so hard to keep buried.
he stared at you for a moment, guilt settling heavily in his chest.
hated that after all these years, he was still somehow the reason you cried.
carefully, he reached over and brushed a stray strand of hair away from your face.
“i’m sorry,” he whispered again, though you were already asleep.
when he finally pulled into your driveway, he turned off the engine and sat there for a moment, looking at you.
then he sighed. “come on.”
he carefully unbuckled your seatbelt before lifting you from the passenger seat.
you barely stirred, instinctively curling closer to the warmth of his chest.
varka froze for half a second.
then he adjusted his hold and carried you toward the house.
the front door opened before he could knock.
your parents stood there. your mother looked surprised. your father looked… amused.
both of them stared at varka carrying their grown daughter through the doorway in the middle of the night.
“well,” your father said slowly.
varka gave him an awkward look, “she’s drunk.”
“i can perfectly see that.”
your mother stepped closer, concern replacing her amusement when she noticed the tear stains on your face.
varka’s expression fell. “…yeah.”
neither parent said anything for a moment.
then your father stepped aside.
“please take her upstairs.”
he carried you through the familiar halls, each step strangely reminiscent of a time when he had walked through this house without hesitation.
when he had belonged here, when he had belonged beside you.
he reached your bedroom and carefully lowered you onto the mattress. you shifted slightly, mumbling something he couldn’t quite make out. varka pulled the blanket over you and stood there for a moment.
he looked at you—at the girl he’d left behind. the girl he’d somehow managed to hurt even after all these years.
he wondered if coming home had been the cruelest thing he could have done to you.
because now that he was here, he wasn’t sure he could leave you again.
