Chipotle’s Scarecrow Ad: Greenwashing or Subtle Push for a Plant-Based Diet? by Jo Tyler

"Could a corporation which profits from selling animal flesh really be sending a subtle (and truthful) message that the best solution to animal cruelty and the environmental crisis is to adopt a plant-based diet?  After all, the company has made encouraging moves to offer more veg-friendly options. Could the absence of animals in the idealized ending be a sign that Chipotle is trying to distance themselves not only from factory farming, but from all forms of animal agriculture?

Or is this just another attempt to convince increasingly concerned and informed consumers that the animal products sold at Chipotle are obtained “humanely” and “sustainably”? Positioning themselves as the good guys in order to increase profits and attract “conscientious carnivores”? Is the decision to omit visual reference to animals or animal-based foods in the video’s solution an attempt to encourage us to forget they are there? (Chicken tacos grow on vines, don’t they?)

Is Chipotle’s Scarecrow ad just a masterful bait and switch? A “deceptive attempt to appropriate the morality of vegetarianism and ascribe it to meat-based business” as this interesting article suggests?

One thing is for sure, The Scarecrow has hit a nerve."
