i finished my 40th book today!! to celebrate, here’s my official top 6 of 2025, with a bit of commentary and honorable mentions below the cut!

Between Two Fires by Christopher Buehlman - god this was good. a fallen knight, a gay priest, and a little girl who can talk to saints journey across plague-destroyed medieval france to rescue the pope from demons. this will rip your heart out but also heal it, and the horror of the catholic imagery is so well done. best of the year AINEC.

Far from the Madding Crowd by Thomas Hardy - i've read a bunch of hardy but somehow never this one, and this just hit perfectly for me. the man can build a pastoral world; you will learn more about sheep and farming from this book than you'd ever care to know, but it's never tedious or stuffy. it absolutely sinks you into this world: into gabriel oak's suffering, into bathsheba everdene's heartbreak, and all the complex mess between them. it has hands down one of my favorite marriage proposals in all of classic lit, not least because it is (rightfully) turned down. an insta-fave for me, thank you mr. hardy

Sorcery and Small Magics by Maiga Doocy - this was so much fun! this one earned a spot for the sheer grin i had on while absolutely zooming through it. the rivals to lovers aspect was wonderful, the characters felt whole and fully drawn (something that tends to be lacking in books like this, written by authors who likely have a certain account on a certain archive) and the magic system felt fresh and creative. cannot wait for the next book

Intermezzo by Sally Rooney - oh i love books about siblings. every confrontation between ivan and peter was absolutely perfect, just stunning and brutal and exciting. ms. rooney truly knows how to pour out misery and dunk you into it as if it's a too-hot cup of tea; the relationships in this, all a bit fucked up and wrong and absolutely draped in repression and "but what will people say?" will make you crumble, but then she delivers. she always, always delivers. i don't think she's ever written a narrative check she couldn't cash.

The Once and Future Sex by Eleanor Janega - i read the majority of this poolside in sonoma, california at a winery resort and it was a 10/10 experience, thank you feminism. this was just a really fun, witty and fairly broad look at medieval gender roles, with some really good depth to how things originated and the chain of history within misogyny.

Assassin's Apprentice by Robin Hobb - this is to represent the whole series, which absolutely knocked me flat this year, but this was also my fave of the series. man did i love this world, and darling fitz. he is such a marvelous idiot. i only know a few things about robin hobbs: she's amazing at writing terrible villains who constantly fail upwards and she fucking hates fanfiction. i respect this as a lover of foefiction. i do think her hostile attitude towards fandom and fic killed a lot of would-be enthusiasm for this series, but i do recommend ignoring that and getting into this world because it's so rewarding. fitz was invented in a lab to be a tumblr blorbo and so was the fool. you will not regret trying these, and i say that as someone who struggles to get immersed in normie fantasy.

James by Percival Everett - incredible, such a showstopper, but you must know that by now.

The Bright Ages by Matthew Gabriele - zippy, fun medieval history. it felt a bit like a nice sampler plate where you get a taste of a few different dishes, but there were parts i wish i could've feasted on. i love how it emphasized how much travel and intermingling there was between europe/africa/asia, it hammered that point home well.

Wearing the Lion by John Wiswell - i adored this lol. was not expecting to, i'm really over greek myth retellings at this point, but this was a breath of fresh air and so much fun. i love, love hera in this, she is such a cunt in the best way and her relationship with ares wound up being really surprising and fascinating.

The Hymn to Dionysus by Natasha Pulley - okay i know i said i'm over retellings but this is not really a retelling, it's just really good! i'm a pulleyhead, though, and her writing is an acquired taste, but i really enjoyed this and recommend it!

I'm at a local music show for the first time in ages, I've missed this so bad

So I have. Never properly drawn Geno, so I decided to do it in honor of the remake! I needed practice drawing him anyways because I am being dragged down the Genario rabbit hole and I cannot draw it if I cannot draw them both.

Now to spend an ungodly amount of time trying to figure out how to work SMRPG into my timeline.
