new take on kent's character (with a splash of patater bc i'm a whore)

so there seems to be a consensus that when kent went to the 2014 epikegster, he did it because he was still in love with jack. he missed him, they were known to be in a relationship, kent wanted him on the aces so they could go back to being the parson-zimmermann duo they used to be. and that's isn't a bad take. it's a perfectly valid and reasonable one, and i don't have a problem with it. but sometimes i like to turn things on their heads, and i want to do that with this idea that kent is still hopelessly in love with jack.

if you were to ask kent in 2010 if he was still in love with jack, he would say yes without hesitation. of course he's still in love. jack was the only stability he had in their constantly changing world, the only constant in an ocean of unknowns. and when that crumbled, kent was left adrift. he no longer had that stability, and he craved it. he wanted it back so badly. and that need became an obsession: restore parson-zimmermann, kent-and-jack, and he would find that stability again.

if you asked kent in 2015 if he was still in love with jack, he would say no. because he's been through a lot of things and he's learned a thing or two, and while it may once have been love, it hasn't been that in a long time. he's gotten therapy, which had taken a long time to understand he needed in the first place, and found a new family. and he'd found someone else — and he's learned from his mistakes, he won't idolize alexei like he idolized jack, and he won't let him become the center of his world.

and he can see now that he's proud of jack, and that he no longer craves the stability he'd lost. he hadn't been adrift for a while, but it had taken until now to realize that. while he can't tell jack that, because jack has been alright for a while now, and telling him would only be for kent's benefit, he can tell bittle. and he does, and he feels more stable for it. he can close that chapter of his life. maybe their paths will cross again. if (when) that time comes, kent won't be the hot-headed, aching 19-year-old he used to be. he's found new stability.
