i'm rewatching supernatural. this show is like, oedipal levels of unaware how incestuous and sexist it is. it's insane on reflection. great drama, gripping acting, but by g-d the writers had no self-awareness as to their poorly disguised fear and disgust with femininity as a whole (including gay and trans ppl)
women are always supporting characters, rarely live longer than two seasons, and often play into one of a select number of archetypes: the mother, the whore, the temptress, the liberal, the victim. women are placed in sam and dean's lives as pieces on a chessboard. they are often the first to attempt to manipulate men, are usually portrayed as inherently frail and selfish, and more often than not die painful, un-dignified deaths for shock. when they're not screaming for help, they're using the men, they're tricking them, they're plotting and scheming against them behind their backs. women play the role of a cosmic punishment in supernatural. every time a man trusts or embraces a woman (or anyone feminine, really) in their life, they pay dearly for it. the woman is taken for drama. the woman becomes evil and kills the man. the woman manipulates him and ruins his life, through drugs or magic or money. the consequences are always dire for the men as a lesson, a lesson of, "don't get close to women."
the huge popularity of incest shipping within the show makes total sense in this context. the winchesters can, quite literally, only rely on each other for basically anything. trying to reach out to anyone else for literally anything gets that person killed or destroyed or annihilated- even main characters that aren't necessarily feminine like bobby or crowley or castiel. but they become feminine in proximity to sam and dean, the last surviving badass patriarchs, who will destroy the world a million times over just to save each other. they quite literally forsake everyone and everything to keep each other close, and the story rewards it by perpetuating their lives for fifteen seasons. fifteen seasons of over twenty episodes each. the winchesters continue to live despite the stakes of supernatural ramping continuously to the point where they are fighting G-d himself by the end, after raising the antichrist as their own son (which is a whole bag of worms on its own...)
this leads you to ask, what's my takeaway here? supernatural seems to imply that the natural order of power flows from the most masculine man to the next most. john winchester to dean. dean to sam. sam to whatever supporting character is around them that hasn't died yet. and so the brothers turn to each other, their enmeshed relationship based on the individualist, western white-picket-fence nuclear-family ideals of "protecting your family". they say this constantly in the show. they say they need to look after each other, protect each other. and in a world of unimaginable monsters, certainly this is reasonable- the boys both die many times throughout the series! but because they refuse to open up to anyone else completely, they are redeemed, sometimes literally. the moment the brothers begin to set their sights on anything other than each other, they are taken advantage of and killed violently, or inflict this on others. of course people think they want to fuck each other. they can't have any other partners. even dean's love interest castiel, who he was supposed to reciprocate his love for in the finale, was snubbed the final moment of closure because the queerbaiting doesn't even take priority over the winchesters' co-dependence. this is jjba levels of misogyny wrapping around to homosexuality. it's like yaoi world but the men never kiss. i get why teenage girls and cougars like it. it's fujoshi edging. the men get close but never kiss. never. they aren't allowed.
I fuck with this
