Canon Powershot SX730 HS ⁣ Taken on 16/06/2019.⁣ ⁣ One of the most medieval Romanesque complexes in Piemonte can be found among the gentle rolling hills and vibrant vineyards in the province of Asti: "l'Abbazia di Vezzolano" ("Vezzolano Abbey").⁣ ⁣ What made this Abbey stand out from the rest for me at first was the fact it wasn't immediately visible. As a matter of fact, I was walking down from Albugnano, a hilltop village just 2km from Vezzolano Abbey, when I thought I'd gone the wrong way. In fact, I did go down the right path and eventually saw the sombre bell tower – built in the 12th century – poking out of the elegantly-shaped trees. ⁣ ⁣ Every single part of the Abbey was utterly stunning. First is the façade (2nd photo) that is wonderfully decorated with statues capitals – the top part of columns – and boasting beautiful bas-reliefs (a type of sculpture attached to a solid background).⁣ ⁣ Then, as soon as you enter the Abbey, there's a finely decorated central nave called a 'pontile' ('pier'), an architectural structure that is rare to find in Italy as they can be mainly found in the Alps. ⁣ ⁣ The most fascinating part of the Abbey for me was the cloister, which contains fantastic 13th—15th-century frescoes that have been magnificently preserved given their age as well as pointed arches that alternate between stone columns and cylindrical pillars made of 'opera mista' (a Roman building technique that involved using a combination of brick and stone). ⁣ ⁣ To think that is hidden medieval gem is free to enter! To get there, take a bus from Asti to Castelnuovo Don Bosco ('Vigobus' route nr 34), then take another to Albugnano on the Castelnuovo Don Bosco–Chieri line ('Vigobus' route nr 171).
