Though collecting quotations could be considered as merely an ironic mimetism—victimless collecting, as it were—this should not be taken to mean that Benjamin disapproved of, or did not indulge in, the real thing. For it was Benjamin's conviction that reality itself invited—and vindicated—the once heedless, inevitably destructive ministrations of the collector. In a world that is well on its way to becoming one vast quarry, the collector becomes someone engaged in a pious work of salvage. The course of modern history having already sapped the traditions and shattered the living wholes in which precious objects once found their place, the collector may now in good conscience go about excavating the choicer, more emblematic fragments.

Confession 2: Its a Wednesday night and I've just got back from youth group. I am a leader in this group, but I will be honest I do not feel like one. Its not because of the kids, and it's not because of any authority (but my head tells me differently). I confess I am not the best leader and I do not claim to be. I try with everything to do what is needed and what I know God wants me to do for and with these kids. I confess I slip up and struggle a bit to get going to be who I need to be for them, but as a leader who has been through a thing or two just like them, I will not lie to them, as no leader should. But that isn't what I am confessing to. I am saying I am not a victim. Yes, life happens and the enemy bombards me everyday with my freshly desires and it is everything to hold on for dear life. I confess that I am not the victim because that is not who God has created me to be. He made me to be a fierce warrior, who fights for Him and people who do not know him. I confess that I make myself be the victim in some situations, but mostly I claim to be victimless which is just prideful. I confess that I make myself stronger and prouder than I am, push myself to sky and then tear myself down to the deepest trenches. I confess I am "Not all that and a bag of chips." I am not a victim. I am not someone who is pushed around. I am not forgotten. Because in Jesus Christ I am not victim, and neither are you. Why? Because we are his, and no one else's. #victimless #confession #self
