yuri!!! on Ice fanart in the year of our lord 2024 anyone??

Do you ever just think about conservatory student, Ketty Abelashvili, an acquaintance from the past, who, after exchanging a few emails with Yuuri Katsuki, sits down and writes the most beautiful love theme of all time? 

Obviously in those e-mails Yuuri opens up to her. He tells us this himself.

And, obviously, Ketty must be a good listener, but how does that explain how she writes the entirety of Yuuri and Victor's Grand Prix season before it even happens?

By the time Yuuri contacts Ketty about rewriting her previously discarded demo, Victor has only been in Hasetsu for maybe two months, so how is it that into this 3 minute, 40 second piece she writes everything that happens after:  Yuuri' declaration of love in front of an international audience, his quad flip at the Cup of China, the kiss, both of their marriage proposals, their mingling heartbeats, their back and forth, their surge and swell, Viktor's newfound freedom and inspiration, and Yuuri's ultimate triumph?  It's all there in every note and phrase!

So, this anniversary week, I'm thinking of Ketty, a character with only a few seconds of screentime (and it's only the back of her head!) and a single line of dialog who, while obviously a highly gifted conservatory student, must also be a seer, a clairvoyant composer who can predict the future OR, maybe, a musical witch so powerful her melody can conjure hopes and dreams into existence OR, most likely, even after just those few e-mails, is a Victurri-shipping fan more certain of Yuuri and Victor's future than they are themselves. 

We owe her so much!

Me, a Yuri On Ice fan, when I read fics describing Ilya Rozanov as an octopus in bed during the night, being overall unhinged when he can love Shane openly, and running into one fic that had him putting a finger to his lip while contemplating doing something mischievous:

I love Yuri on Ice so much because it's just a silly little sports anime, the whole thing is really unserious and relatively nothing bad happens in the entire show it's such a breath of fresh air.

I love how it handles mental health, and sexuality, and gender expression, all while still being a funny silly show and without it feeling like the jokes are about those topics. It was very important representation for a lot of young people at the time, myself included, and even today it's something that makes me really happy to see. A world where homophobia truly doesn't exist, a public relationship between and Japanese man and a Russian man (both countrys where same sex marriage is still illegal) where the only commentary on the relationship are loudly proclaimed congratulations. It's refressing. I like a homophobia/internalized homophobia tag as much as the next person, but I like to think of a world where that's only a fantasy and not reality.

I also like that their relationship is more ambiguous, the themes of the season being "Love" and "Live" and how both Yuri and Victor were burnt out needed to find something to love that would help them live. Rekindling their love for skating while also creating new important relationships. The theme being love and not making it explicitly romantic, sexual, or platonic. It's just love, and that's all it needs to be. Makes me really happy.

I love seeing the group of skaters who are competeing against eachother all being friends with eachother, and how even the most annoying character (JJ) has humanizing qualitys, and for me at least, moments where you root for him as well. Plus his theme song is kind of a banger. I have very strong feelings about fictional characters, and I do have hate in my heart. I much prefer to give it to said characters rather than let it flood my real life and relationships, but there is genuinly no character in Yuri on Ice that I would say I hate, or even dislike. Every single character gives something to the show, and without them it wouldn't be the same.

It's also just really funny, it doesn't take itself too seriously. The balancing act between the emotional scenes and the comedic aspects is done beautifully. I love jokes, I love laughing, and I really really love this show for it's comedy. I know the main theme and what it's advertized as isn't comedy, but genuinely the biggest thing I say when reccomending the show is that it's funny.

I'm usually more into shows that have an overaching story with lots of world building and character lore, fantasy aspects, the whole shibang. It's not my style at all but Yuri on Ice is tied with aot for first in my top anime list, and it's up there in my favorite tv shows of all time. Lives were changed.
