When we think about Greece, usually we think about crystal clear water, the islands, the infinite blue and white colours...., well this time we decided to discover the Greece hinterland and it was unreal.

Forget about the crowd, it was very quiet every where. People was extremely friendly and welcoming and the nature was beyond beautiful. If you want to have a real vacation, disconnect from the city stress and spend some quality time with your loved ones, I highly recommend this trip.

We visited the Greece hinterland in one week in April and we mainly spent our time in two areas: the Meteora and the Vikos Aoos National Park. We stayed 3 nights in each area and I think it was the perfect timing.

The Meteora area is very touristic but in April the other visitors are mainly groups of local students or local families. It’s an amazing site where you can find some monasteries built on rocks and very nice hiking tracks. MUST DO: if you visit this area, you’ll most probably visit the biggest monastery Megalo Meteoro. The monastery itself is worth a visit but the hiking track near it has unbelievable views. You will not find any sign to find this track. If you are in the parking area and the monastery is in front of you on your left side, the hiking path is on your right side on the hill, on the opposite side from the monastery. It’s a pleasant and easy hiking, you can do it even with young kids.

Vikos Aoös is a lovely national park and definitely worth the travel (a few hours drive from the Meteora). It’s the perfect place to do some adventure and outdoor activities. The nature is incredibly beautiful and well preserved. We did the rafting in the Voidomatis, the most beautiful river in the area and one of the cleanest rivers in Europe. The water is so clean you can drink directly from the river. Even though the water was cold (it’s fresh mountain water so the temperature of the water is around 8 to 10 degrees Celcius all year round) the whole family jumped into the water and it was a lot of fun. Highly recommended !

We stayed in a very nice boutique hotel in Vikos Aoös : Aristi Mountain Resort. Their price is very reasonable for European standard and the quality of services that you get there is really exceptional. Luxury but simple and unpretentious. 

Can’t wait to come back to this region again !
