The scientific name is different depending on which taxon authority you consult. The U.S. government’s Integrated Taxonomic Information System (ITIS) lists only Bifora americana as an accepted species, and a search for Atrema americanum yields no results (i.e., it doesn’t even exist in ITIS). Plants of the World Online (POWO), on the other hand, regards A. americanum as the accepted name and B. americana as the synonym.

This plant is found mainly in Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. A population also exists in Alabama, though it’s unclear if it is native or introduced to the region.
