Expand on the positive and negative traits given in the bio:
+ athletic; Keeping active is something that has always been of interest to Vincent. He enjoys physical pursuits and challenges, and has always been naturally adept at a variety of sports. He is graceful and has always been a choice dance partner at the society Balls if for no other reason than his partners did not have to be frightened that he might spoil their shoes by treading upon their dainty feet (and it was lucky for him considering he often partnered with Clara Tarasova and found himself needing to be agile to avoid her spiky heels). He has always enjoyed keeping active, and never sits still in one place for long. There is an infectious energy about him that almost buzzes, and those that remain in close proximity with him for any length of time might find themselves clicking a pen, or jiggling a knee along with him. Vincent is confident in his athletic prowess, and unafraid of physical challenges – though prefers to avoid anything that might leave him with any sort of physical pain or discomfort.
+ easily amused; Growing up the youngest of four boys, Vincent was often left out of his brother’s games before he was capable of keeping up. Because of this he had to find ways of entertaining himself. He learned to find amusement in even the smallest and most obscure of sources, including, on occasion pulling the wings off of flies. However, because of the ease with which he finds amusement, no single thing ever manages to hold his attention for any great period of time. He jumps from thing to thing, and like a magpie, is attracted to shiny objects. He is always on the search for the next entertainment that will take his fancy. He is impressionable, and is just as easily amused by what others tell him to be amused by as those he finds for himself. Not only is Vincent easily amused, but he is always on the lookout for amusement. He dreads boredom, and will do almost anything to avoid it.
+ generally mellow; Vincent learned at a young age that there was a hard way to do things, and an easy way to do things. And the hard way usually ended with one of his brothers sitting on him until his mother came and demanded they play in a way that Vincent could be a part of as more than a prop. The easy way meant simply going along with the flow. Besides, when everything you have ever wanted seemed to come to you without any real effort on your part, why fight the tide? Vince knows that it is often in his best interest to put his head down and get on with it when faced with difficulties and confrontation.
Aside from this, Vincent has generally developed a thick skin. Being confident and having a strong positive self image (some might say unreasonably so) Vincent is fairly unflappable when it comes to petty comments or insults. His general reaction is to keep his cool and shrug it off rather than let things devolve into a snarky argument – he leaves that sort of thing to his housemates. That’s not to say that a particularly bad slight will not result in retaliation, only that Vincent has an exceptionally high tolerance for what he considers bad enough to necessitate any sort of backlash. It is far more likely that one of his impetuous or tempered friends will step in, affronted by the slight to their friend, while Vincent watches on in amusement – perhaps only joining in for the fun of it.
+ popular; Generally likeable and outgoing, Vincent has never had any issues surrounding himself with swathes of acquaintances. He is generally pleasant to those he meets and has an easy smile. But in large part he could thank his malleable personality for his popularity. He is flexible – able to adapt his whims and entertainments to any situation – and he is always up for a good time. If someone has a plan, Vince is up for it. Want to hit around some bludgers – Vince is in. Want to sneak down to the kitchens past curfew – Vince is your man. Want to hex a third year mudblood – Vince will do that too.
Always having been surrounded by his brothers, Vincent feels the need to be a part of a pack. He feels more secure as a part of a group, no matter how tenuous the connections.
Also, being one of four siblings, Vincent is driven by a desire to strike a chord in the people he meets – to be remembered for himself rather than simply as one of the younger Averys. This has meant that he has learned to develop his ‘people-skills’ and has crafted his own brand of charisma. He is not intentionally insulting and would converse with anyone, should they approach him, even if only for a little while. All of these things help Vincent to get along and play nice with others be generally well liked amongst many spheres of people.
- ignorant; Vincent’s ignorance comes less from a lack of knowledge or understanding, and more from a place of deep uncaring about mostly anything outside of himself. Extraordinarily self-absorbed, until something has a real or tangible impact upon his life he is not particularly interested. This almost-apathy extends beyond current events and certain school subjects that he finds dull, to his interactions with his classmates. On occasion he can be callous or insensitive without realising – ignorant to the offensive off-the-cuff comments that he might make and their effect upon the person with whom he is conversing. Worse, Vincent has no real desire to know things. He is generally happy with what he is told. He has no real sense of curiosity and is instead content with the simplest of answers to a problem and the bare facts of a situation rather than any need to get to the truth or complexities. In fact, if one tries to ply Vince with unwanted information, he is likely to tune it out, half listen, or simply wander away.
- spoiled; Often it is thought that children without siblings are the most spoiled, however being the youngest of four boys certainly had its advantages. Growing up Vincent has had all of the perks of being a male pureblood from a wealthy family in the upper echelons of society without any of the responsibilities that some of his peers may have. Any single thing that he has ever wanted has been handed to him on a gilded plate. Because of this, Vincent has no concept of perseverance, or needing to work for anything – ‘hard work’ is a foreign concept. While he does not necessarily become frustrated or angry when he does not get his way, he is likely to just go on to the next thing that catches his attention. Whilst this may not be an issue in relation to material possessions, it certainly can have an impact on Vincent’s relationships with people. When he doesn’t get his way with a person, or if any individual is too difficult, Vincent is unlikely to stick around for too long. – most people are interchangeable in his view, and there are many who would be happy to be his entertainment. The world is there for his amusement, and if he is not amused, he is not interested.
- vain; Vincent has never met a mirror that he didn’t like. He cares about his appearance more than your average individual and has a detailed regime for looking after his hair and skin. He has impeccably tailored clothing, made in the latest fashions and from the finest cloths. He preens himself constantly, always ensuring that he looks his best. This is somewhat of a preoccupation for Vincent, and he has been known to be late to events and to meet with people if his appearance is not perfect. This interest in his appearance extends to the importance that he places upon how he is viewed by others in all respects – but he is not concerned with the essence of what he is, merely the semblance. Provided that others view him to be a certain way Vincent will be content – provided the way they see him is exactly how he wants to be seen.
History:
Background – General
The Avery’s have long inhabited a townhouse in Kensington Palace Gardens in the heart of London. Whilst they also have a country manor, Clayton Avery had always preferred to be in the city, at the heart of things. And as with all of his decisions, Clayton simply expected that his family would follow suit. His wife, Gwendolyn Yaxley, performed her duties adequately and was a pleasant, if somewhat ditsy woman – but then Clayton had not married her for her brain.
They had their heir, and their spare, twice over – each child born an orderly two years apart. Little Vincent – Vinny to his mother - was the youngest of all. The four boys had much in common – charming, boisterous, and up for almost anything. It was lucky that the world was their playground – little else could contain them. Now the heir continues to live in London, intending to follow in his father’s footsteps into the Wizengamot. The spare has taken up a reputable, though less prestigious position, amongst the Ministry (though no one is quite sure what he does) and the third has disappeared for the time being, travelling into the wilds of South America to find himself before he is due to return and take up a career in curse breaking.
Much of Vincent’s young life was spent in the company of other children who were almost exactly like him. Vincent learned quickly that the children responded well to his outgoing nature, and ability to seem to be interested in any sort of game they could throw at him – even if he was also usually the first to complain of boredom should it drag on even a fraction too long.
These connections followed Vincent into Hogwarts and through his sorting into Slytherin. In the house of his forefathers Vincent continued to find that he did not have to work for much. Room was always made for him to sit by his friends at the table, the school work was easily dealt with (he managed reasonable grades with little effort), and he generally had time to put into his favourite pursuit – amusing himself.
Over the years not much has changed for Vincent. He has picked up a betrothed, and in turn had some higher expectations placed upon him by his father. But he still has little thought for his future, not yet having decided upon a career, and not yet really wanting to. He is content to continue in the carefree, larrikin lifestyle that he has always led, preferring to avoid responsibility and complication for as long as possible.
Family Relationships
Vincent’s father, Clayton, was a stern, but not unkind man. A senior member of the Wizengamot he has a desire to impart justice and fairness – only he has a peculiar personal definition of exactly what justice entails. It is rumoured that for the right price Clayton will be either friend or foe come a trial, and he is yet to falter in providing a logical reason for voting any particular way in any particular case. A bright man, he prefers to twist justice to suit his own ends. It is perhaps because of this outlook that Vincent never really learned the difference between right and wrong, believing them to be relative, rather than absolute, ideas. The more important he deemed a particular child, the more interest Clayton takes in their life – but is primarily interested in their schooling and their career projections rather than trifling matters. Vincent, for many years, was able to slip carefully under his father’s radar (he learned quickly of the fine balance between dutiful and troublesome – it was perfectly acceptable to make mischief, especially if it was an acceptable sort of mischief, provided one was viewed in the correct light by wider society). Clayton has never been swift to punish, but when he deemed it necessary the punishment was harsh, and thorough. Loss of privileges often sat comfortably alongside physical reprimands Generally, Vincent has a pleasant relationship with his father born of mutually low expectations and contentment with absences.
Vincent’s mother, Gwendolyn, is younger than his father by about a decade. She is by and large a simple woman, content with trinkets and parties and with no great desire to be more than what she is. She is a follower in the social scene, rather than a leader, and well liked because of her pleasant and nonthreatening disposition and complacent nature. She has always taken an interest in her children, over indulging them to make up for the many occasions when she was too distracted to remember one or another important event in her children’s lives.
Vincent has always had an amiable relationship with his elder brothers – though there is an undercurrent of competition amongst them (even if it is never spoken of aloud). Similarly to many other pureblood families, there were thought to be two main things that determined the importance of a child: the order in which they were born, and their gender. Vincent at least had one of those things in his favour.
Unfortunately for Vincent his elder brothers were intelligent enough, and handsome enough, and successful enough, to secure themselves good futures and to make their parents proud. Whilst this took the pressure off Vincent in that he did not have to be the one to carry the Avery name, it also meant that no one ever really gave Vincent’s achievements as much recognition as he may have wanted, and for the boy who wanted others to at least believe he was impressive, this was somewhat irksome. It often feels to Vince that no matter what he does, another brother has done it before him – and possibly better. His eldest brother is the responsible one, the most like their father. The second is the intelligent, calm one. The third brother was always the most rebellious and free spirited – the charismatic one. And then there was Vince, the baby – but his mother’s favourite. In truth Vince may have been the handsome one (though he was not that different to his brothers to make much difference) or perhaps the athletic one (though he was not the most athletic in the school, so it hardly seemed to be a worthwhile trait). There was never much that was particularly special to Vincent – at least, not until his betrothal to Andromeda Black.
The Betrothal
It might well be wondered how the youngest son (of four) from a slightly lesser family had ended up betrothed to one of the infamous Black Sisters. In truth, one might be right to wonder just how Vincent and Andromeda came to be betrothed towards the end of Vincent’s fourth year, but it was not through mere happenstance or an oversight of their parents that the mismatched pair were paired up.
For one, the Blacks already had firm ties amongst the families above the Averys in the social hierarchy.
Whilst not officially announced, it was somewhat expected that some day the eldest Black Daughter and the eldest Lestrange Son would be betrothed – it made sense politically and they were, after all, friends. Sirius was, at that stage, betrothed to Alecto Carrow, and though the cracks between Sirius and his family seemed to crumble at the edges with each passing day, nobody had really expected the events that would eventually come to pass. Narcissa was already promised to the Malfoy heir. The betrothal had been announced early and there were rumours that young Malfoy had asked for her himself. The Rosiers and the Blacks were already well acquainted through marriage, and though it had been practice in the past for cousins to marry one another, it had largely gone out of fashion in more modern times (with notable exceptions where it was necessary for the continuation of a family name). Next in line were the Averys, and whilst Vincent may have been the youngest, it was also his happy coincidence that he was the only son not yet engaged.
But there had been other reasons that made Vincent an ideal candidate. For one, he fit with the image of the family. He knew how to present himself to advantage and was generally well liked amongst the social set – even Walburga Black seemed charmed by him – or at least as charmed by him as she ever was by anyone (rumour had it that she had even laughed at one of his jokes once, a stifled, creaky, guffaw that demonstrated amusement – if one ). There wasn’t much that was said against him, in truth, except that he had a tendency towards being irresponsible and distracted, but that was merely seen as a symptom of his age – something he would grow out of.
The other reason was Vincent’s unflappable demeanour. It was no secret that Andromeda Black could, on occasion, be a little difficult. The theory had been that Vincent would be able to weather the storms of dramatics that seemed to constantly swirl around the Blacks – he might, eventually, even learn to calm the tempestuous girl down. And even if not, if the pair would not necessarily be happy at least they might be able to tolerate each other.
The Betrothed
As far as symbolism goes, being betrothed to the middle daughter of the infamous Black family was quite a coup for the youngest Avery. Of course, Vincent had always known that he deserved whatever he wanted, and what he wanted was something that would elevate him amongst his brothers. And there was no way known any of their wives could compare to a Black – even if she wasn’t the eldest. Best of all, Vincent had hardly had to do a thing to secure the betrothal except agree to it and he hasn’t seen reason since to put in much effort.
As a person Vincent often thinks his wife-to-be leaves something to be desired. She is beautiful, but cold, and far too difficult by half. And difficulty is never something that has resonated particularly well with Vincent – he has never felt a strong desire to rise to any challenge – especially not when there are so many other girls out there willing to share their time with him. On occasion he finds himself becoming interested in her again, but other than their few brief tumbles amongst the sheets, he hasn’t felt that she has shown any great interest in him – and there’s only so much Vincent can find interesting in a girl who barely deigns to speak to him unless the mood strikes her – usually when she is dragging him away from someone else, or putting a halt to an antic that he has found amusing.
Unfortunately for Vincent, his betrothal has had some unintended consequences. Because of the importance of his betrothal, and because of the elevation in status Andromeda will provide (there is talk that the Avery’s may surpass the Rosiers once Andromeda joins their ranks) there is an increased pressure upon Vincent to step up and represent the family well – a pressure that he has never previously had to face. He finds the expectations that are being placed upon him, primarily by his father, uncomfortable – much like an ill fitting, scratchy suit. He doesn’t much care for it, but will tolerate it for as long as it helps his image.
As with all things in his life, Vincent does not believe that there is any chance that he will not eventually get what he wants, and without any extraordinary effort on his part. The betrothal, as far as he is concerned, is just another link in the chain of events that will make up his charmed life – nothing he does will change it, so why bother doing anything at all – he would rather spend his time following other, more interesting disputes.
The Best Friends – The Russian Ballerina and the Baby Black
Although he is often surrounded by many friendly faces, Vincent will only make any sort of special effort for two of them: Regulus Black and Clara Tarasova.
Vincent and Clara were destined to be friends. Their fathers had been classmates at Hogwarts, and remained close friends once released again into the wider wizarding world. Clara and Vincent, being of a similar age, were usually pushed together throughout their childhood – in part because their parents believed, perhaps foolishly, that they would keep each other entertained and out of mischief. In their early years, the pairing had largely had the desired effect. The children were presentable, and presented well to society, usually content to sit, quietly mumbling and giggling to each other through the boring parts of speeches, and amuse themselves by dominating the dance floor at other times. As they had matured, and particularly once Clara had begun to rebel, the pair were more inclined to find trouble of a slightly different sort – causing havoc by playing pranks, or sneaking off to share cigarettes and firewhiskey in the garden depending on how the mood struck them.
It wasn’t until the start of their fifth year that Vincent and Clara had the first real test to their friendship. Many momentous announcements – Clara’s career advancement, and parent’s divorce, and Vincent’s betrothal, had pushed the two together, each trying to find some semblance of stability in the presence of the other. Somewhere along the way, that desire to find comfort landed them in bed.
Vincent had been surprised then to see Clara at Hogwarts, looking markedly different, bearing a new attitude, and without a word of warning. She had pushed him away initially, and Vincent had let himself be pushed – not wanting the confrontation – and besides, hadn’t that always been how things had been whenever they had had disagreements in the past? He would wander back, from time to time, over the next few months, always with the same result. Until eventually, Clara had had enough. They had had a huge blowout – one of only a few that Vincent had ever been involved in – and the truth had tumbled out. Clara had been pregnant – that was why she was back. He had asked if it was his, but at the time, the answer had been unclear. He knew it didn’t matter anyway. From that point they were back to how they had been – best of friends, inseparable – almost. Since then hairline cracks have started appearing in their friendship, and while it is far from beyond repair at this point, if neither notices and if steps are not taken to mend them, eventually it will be too late.
Vincent’s other close friend is one Regulus Black, the unexpected heir to the Black Family Mantle. Regulus and Vincent had fallen in together as children. The two, while opposite in many respects, were near inseparable aside from often being pulled in different directions at gatherings by the many Black family members, or Clara. But while their personalities are different, there were several important things that helped bring Vince and Reg together, including that they each know what it is like to live in the shadow of their elder siblings.
They are foils to each other – Regulus is stability to Vincent, when he needs it – a point to come back to and someone that he can share his experiences and amusements with. To Regulus, Vincent is the person that shakes him free of his worries, reminding him to lighten up – they aren’t grown up yet – there is plenty of time to play at being an heir once they have left school.
It is, in fact, lucky for Vince that he is such good friends with the young Black. Not only was it a reason that he gained his betrothal to Andromeda in the first place, but it is an easy avenue to gain information about Andromeda – on the rare occasion that Vincent realizes he requires it. More often than not though, Regulus is forced to be Vincent’s sounding bored when he is frustrated about why his advances to Andromeda seem doomed to be unsuccessful.
Blood Purity – Friendships and Relationships generally
Vincent prefers to choose his friends from a certain set and many of them he has known since childhood. From an early age, as with many of his close peers, Vincent was taught, and subsequently believes, that those pure of blood are simply better than those who are not. For the most part, Vincent does not take an issue with these views and has no reason to doubt them.
For this reason, he would not choose to associate with a person of lesser blood, and for the most part, he has kept largely to his own group of friends being reluctant to step outside his circle. But, being an easily distracted sort, there are times when Vincent finds himself conversing with them. On those occasions there is a 50/50 chance as to whether he will indulge them in a conversation or hex them for sport – with the odds swaying more heavily towards a hexing where the other person is younger, or less able to put up any sort of resistance. Vincent has always found amusement in the hexing of younger students - a continuation from his general amusement at picking the wings off flies as a child.
However, Vincent is wont to forget the importance of blood purity when it comes to pretty girls. Of course he would never fathom starting anything serious with such a girl, but he is certainly liable to amuse himself with one.
Blood Purity – The War
As yet, Vincent has no real conception of the war and what it all means for him and his future. He is aware that his father is involved, as are his eldest two brothers. The third because of his current travels has been kept out of things.
He understands that the purpose of the war is to keep the mudbloods in their place, or maybe the mudbloods were revolting (he isn’t bothered by such trivial details), and somehow it means that it is necessary to preserve his way of life. He views this as important, but struggles to understand the depth or complexity of what is happening, and certainly doesn’t yet fully understand the lengths the Death Eaters will go to in attempting to win.
He is aware, of course, that the attacks have been occurring and is not opposed to the idea of being involved himself one day – after all, the cause is one that he considers to be important, and he has never been adverse to putting a mudblood in their place when required.
But he is not ready yet. He is still at Hogwarts and has every intention of living it up as much as he can until his father sits him down for the talk. As far as he knows, it might never come.

Boggart: Himself, middle aged, balding, overweight, at a boring desk job without any excitement in his life.
Patronus: A peacock. Expect explanation in prompt form.
Extracurricular Activites: Quidditch Beater
Biography (OPTIONAL):
Give me until Sunday. I’ll get around it.
Any changes you wish to make to the bio?
Nope nope.
Who would be wanted more Evan or Vincent? I'd love to do either of them!
Without a doubt, I know we would all really love to have a Vincent Avery. Consider giving his bio a look, please? You’d have a ton of amazing plots to be welcomed into.
Psssss anon- you should apply for Vincent *hint hint*
Our Regulus has spoken! Make all of our day and send in an application for Vincent? He was our most recent MOST WANTED character, and his bio can be found HERE. He is a pureblood sixth year Slytherin, with a Chase Crawford faceclaim and a doomed betrothal to Andromeda Black already in place. Give him a look??
I'm tempted to apply for Avery, but the last/first Vincent was really good and the only other app previous got rejected... not to mention I'm very new to Tumblr Roleplaying.
If you’re unsure, we’re more than willing to let you just send in a para sample or part of the app and we can let you know if you’re on the right track before you complete a full app! We really do encourage you to just go for it and submit and application, though. Even if it isn’t accepted, we’re always able to give feedback on it and let you try again! -Admin Amanda
Clara seems pretty invested in Vincent's future love life.
Hmmm, what are you trying to say? Hm, you don’t think she’s involved with him in any way, do you? He is betrothed. Not that Andromeda seems to show that off much.
thoughts on all the betrothals? do you think they'd do better than the selected choice or no?
These pairs were picked by their parents who it seems, instead of having their children’s best interests at heart, have the interests of maintaing perfect purebloods. Some of them, I think they could work, but some…
Example? Andromeda Black and Vincent Avery. I won’t deny the boy is attractive, but what chemistry do you see between the two— if any? I don’t see enough of these two so I can’t really say but Narcissa and Lucius? Will he really make her happy in the long run? Will she keep him the same?Marlene and Niklaus? Honestly, thank god that turned out how it did, the world does not need their offspring.
Have I missed someone? I know I have. But we are in 1977, and these betrothals are acts of the medieval times. Sometimes, I’m quite glad to have not been born a pureblood.
