I'm not the biggest fan of breaking dawn, but I do like the movies and my favorite part (I'm watching part 2 on HBO right now) is when in Alice's vision that Aro sees his brother/friend/really not sure about the relationship there still LOL- is like "finally..." When they kill him LOL. Favorite fuckin part hands down
It’s pretty great. Poor Marcus just wants out of his lonely, pointless vampire life so badly.
I still kind of feel bad for the Romanians though, since they wanted to kill the Volturi more than anyone and they only got to take out the one who actually wanted to die. Like in a way they were being NICE to Marcus. It was sort of a mercy killing, I mean that’s kind of a hollow victory, right? Although in my head, if the battle had been real, the Romanians would have told the story differently:"He had the strength of 5 vampires.""No, 10!""Yes, 10! And yet Stefan and I—""—we killed him. Ripped off his arms and tore him in half—""-as he begged for his pathetic life!"And everyone else is like, uh huh, yeah, riiiiiiight.
What do you think of Jane & Alec Volturi? Also which did you prefer - the meeting with the Volturi in the book or did you prefer the movie version?
A couple posts about Jane and AlecTheir relationshipIf they had a different creatorAs tragic figurestl;dr: I don’t think they were ‘evil’ as humans—they were neutral, neither good nor bad. Their experience being burned at the stake and then being ‘raised’ by the likes of Caius and Aro is what, IMO, made them what they are. They had the potential for good, but it was squashed. As for the ending, I think I like the movie ending better, but it would never have worked in the book. A trick like that only works in a visual medium, you couldn’t ‘fool’ the audience the same way in the book. And I’ve said before, it’s not the ending I take issue with. There is absolutely nothing wrong with a peaceful resolution or a ‘mental chess game” ending. Those are totally valid choices and I understand why SM went that route (although I still say the ending isn’t really resolved because Aro is still in power, but). It’s definitely in keeping with the Cullens’ (or, well, let’s be honest—mostly just Carlisle’s) philosophy. The issue was the set up. She set up for this balls-to-the-wall badass battle where beloved characters were going to die. She had Bella going on and on about how they would all fight and all die, how they had so little time left to be together, how this was the end of the Cullens and her and Edward. And this is BELLA who has been optimistic about everything else (Edward won’t hurt me, he’s not bad, we can have sex and he won’t kill me, this baby is a good thing, I won’t regret becoming a vampire). Bella planned an escape for Renesmee. Bella and the others trained for the fight. The various allied vampires called dibs on who they wanted to kill. SM built up all this tension and then… . nothing. It was like the air being let out of a balloon rather than a sudden, dramatic POP. If she had set it up like the Cullens were expecting a trial that might turn into a battle rather than OMG THERE WILL DEFINITELY BE BATTLE!! I think it would have worked better and wouldn’t have been such a let down to so many readers. Climaxes set in a courtroom can be fantastically tense and exciting, but when you're setting up for a battle, when the enemy literally marches halfway across the world to come and kill you, and then you just stand there and chat, it doesn't work that well. If the Cullens had been summoned to Volterra for a trial, collecting their 'witnesses' on the way, I think it would have worked better. With the movie ending we got that POP we were expecting, and then we got the peaceful ending SM wanted, so I think it worked better. It’s very in keeping with the whole “have your cake and eat it too” fantasy of Twilight; Bella getting to keep both Edward and Jacob in her life and getting to be a vamp without any of the drawbacks the others faced all play into this fantasy too.
What are your opinions on the battle in Breaking Dawn Part 2 and have you thought of different endings - the Volturi over-powering the Cullen's or changes to who died?
I don’t really have any significant problems with the vision (other than that Alice shouldn’t have been able to see it because of the wolves and Renesmee, but I recnogize that as a creative decision it was the right way to go even if it borked the mythology a bit). A lot of people get upset about Jasper dying because he has such experience in battle but it doesn’t really bother me because of the Jane factor. She probably singled him out BECAUSE he was so deadly and dangerous and wanted to neutralize that threat right off the bat. The Volturi, like Jasper, are hardened, trained fighters. Jasper fans should take heart that it took THREE of the Volturi’s most powerful and deadly (Felix, Demetri and Jane) to take him out.
I think the Carlisle/Aro thing was a little clumsy, but basically if Carlisle had to die, I’m glad that Aro was the one to do it. It’s fitting. I think in the back of their minds they’ve always kind of known that one of them would eventually have to kill the other, and given Carlisle’s pacifism, it probably wasn’t going to be Carlisle who did the killing. As for alternate endings, I still think Zafrina, Benjamin and the wolves could have ended the whole thing in like 30 seconds. lol. Zafrina blinds the Volturi, the wolves leap in and tear them all to pieces, and then Benjamin lights ‘em up. Done and done! Maybe Aro would survive this because Renata and her shield would keep the wolves from touching him, but Aro by himself is not much of a threat—Bella wouldn’t be affected by Renata’s shield and she could probably kill the docile Renata who has never had to learn to fight, leaving Aro exposed. The Volturi were going to be hindered by Bella’s shield, since Alec couldn’t just paralyze everyone like they are used to. But if the battle started before Zafrina, Benjamin and the wolves could do their thing, I think ultimately the Volturi would probably win just on numbers alone. It would be long, drawn-out and brutal, but they’ve got overwhelming force and centuries of experience on their side.
How do you think the Cullen family would have carried on if Alice's vision had actually happened in BD part II; everyone but particularly Esme and Alice?
I wrote a little bit about what it might have been like here. For me, personally, I think painting suicide as romantic is very dangerous. I don’t want Alice and Esme to kill themselves. That’s not a good message to send. I was pissed at Edward in New Moon for trying to kill himself when he thought Bella was dead. He couldn’t bear the pain of losing her for even 24 hours, but he was going to kill himself and inflict a similar pain on the rest of his family for all eternity. (Not to mention he did it in Volterra and shared all the family secrets with Aro first—if he hadn’t let Aro see his thoughts, Aro wouldn’t have known about his gift, and Alice’s, and Bella’s potential, and then maybe the Volturi actually would have cleaned up Victoria’s newborns in Eclipse like they were supposed to, and the Breaking Dawn confrontation wouldn’t have happened at all. Nice going, Edward lol). Carlisle attempted suicide when he first became a vampire, but that’s a different kettle of fish. He was a vampire hunter who had become a vampire—he thought he needed to be destroyed before he hurt someone. Once he found another option (animal blood), he stopped trying to kill himself; that is, once he realize he could exist without hurting anyone, he accepted his fate and moved on. Esme attempted suicide when her son died, but I sort of think of think that was a ‘cry for help’ and a snap decision more than anything. She didn’t plan anything out like Edward did in traveling to Volterra and throwing away his phone. And Esme learned from the experience, she didn’t give up and let herself be destroyed during the battle. She fought to hang on as she dangled on the edge of a cliff! Carlisle was already dead at that point. She was choosing to live. Leah died saving Esme—Esme, as a mother who had lost a child, would understand the pain Sue Clearwater would be in and wouldn’t let Leah’s death be in vain. If Esme kills herself, Leah died for nothing, and if ALICE kills herself, Carlisle died for nothing. He died trying to save her. So no, I don’t think either of them would kill themselves. People say oh but a vampire has ‘no choice’ when a mate dies, they either go insane with revenge or they kill themselves but there is always a choice. If Alice and Esme killed themselves who would be left? Rosalie and Emmett with Renesmee? (Bella and Edward were killed right after they killed Aro). No, they’d carry on to keep Jasper and Carlisle’s memories alive and to keep what was left of their family together. Unlike most vampires they DO have strong bonds outside of the mate bond. They can help each other cope, Rosalie and Emmett can help them cope. Depending on how much of the Volturi was left (in the movie Felix was still alive, as well as-as far as we know—most of the book!Volturi like Chelsea, Corin, Renata, Afton, the wives. It would be kind of awesome if Sulpicia and Athenodora turned out to be total badasses and rebuilt their husbands’ empire. Of Chelsea could—she could make whoever remained loyal to her), they might either want revenge and hunt the remaining Cullens down, or a new government might need to be formed. If the first, I think Alice would become obsessed with tracking them via her visions to distract herself and keep what was left of her family safe. If the later, Esme might wish to become involved in the vampire government in hopes that she could keep Carlisle’s ‘vision’ alive.
Waiting Room
Following his beheading and immolation at the hands of Edward and Bella, Aro found himself in what he knew from the memories of countless humans as a 'waiting room.' The walls were painted a dull sea-green, the floor was faded linoleum tile, and rows of uncomfortable chairs filled the space (along with a few end tables piled haphazardly with magazines). At the front of the room was a desk where a bored middle aged woman sat. Aro noted that several of his departed dear ones already occupied many of the chairs. Demetri was there, drumming his fingers on his leg impatiently. Alec was comforting a clearly incensed Jane. Caius looked equally enraged, while Marcus sat with a serene smile on his face. It was only then that he noticed, sitting in a chair near the front desk, the figure of his dear friend whom he had murdered not a half hour ago. “My, this is awkward,” Aro said.
Alice's Vision?
How big of a factor to you think it was that Alice saw Jasper die in her vision? If she hadn't seen him die, do you think she would have still tried to stop the fight, or just let it happen? The Cullens seem to have won, after all--all the major Volturi other than Felix were killed. Or would the loss of Carlisle (and the Clearwaters, and possibly Edward, Bella & Rosalie) have been too great a loss for her, even if she, Jasper, and the other survivors would live out their eternity free of the Volturi?
Do you know a thing that annoys me? The fact that in BD Pt. 2 they never showed Esme running. They've just killed HER husband, for God's sake! They should have show her running to kill that murderers to protect her family and Carlisle's legacy! We know she's not the fighting type, but according to all the "mating" thing, she should be seeking revenge! If she couldn't resist her thirst for human blood in the past, she wouldn't be able to resist her thirst for revenge after Carlisle's death, IMO.
Yeah I mean as much as Esme is not really the violent type, it would have been nice to have least seen her do SOMETHING badass in the fight. We see her horrified/grief-stricken reaction and then we don’t see her again until Leah saves her from falling into the pit and that’s it. Well in some background shots you can see her fighting with on of the Volturi’s witnesses, Yvette from the deleted scene with the French coven or something. I do understand that in all the previous movies, when she has fought it has been with Carlisle, as a team. They were a team in Eclipse and again in BD1 when the wolves showed up at the house—they knocked Sam off Edward together. So the idea that she now has to fight alone is an extra level of sadness. It would have been cool if she helped Edward and Bella kill Aro somehow at least! Alice got her revenge for Jasper, but we don’t know if Esme even survived the fight (I sort of doubt that she would, sadly).
