Calling all Disney lovers! Did you know the Disney family owns a winery in Napa Valley? Silverado Vineyards was established in 1981 with the help of Lillian Disney (Walt Disney’s wife) and Diane and Ron Miller (Walt’s daughter and husband). Prior to this time they sold fruits to neighboring wineries. . . Present day the winery offers spectacular views of the Stags Leap District. My favorite wine was the Oakville Station Cabernet Sauvignon but I loved every wine I tried. All tastings are by appointment only so make sure to plan accordingly. Why is that wine bottle crying? Tears of joy that my favorite Napa restaurant is making food again. An email popped up early this week from Torc in downtown Napa announcing a bbq pop-up and I couldn’t resist. The smoked ribs were amazing as were all of Chef Sean’s salads. And to cap it off, they were offering this luscious Melka CJ Cabernet Sauvignon at a very reasonable price. The 2016 was luscious and ready to be consumed. Cathy Corison is one of the best winemakers in Napa Valley. Her well-known and highly-regraded Corison Winery produces some of the most elegant, structured, balanced Cabs you can get in Napa. She has a real respect for the grape, and the terroir, and her wines are always a great expression of both. We have tasted it and winery before, and on that occasion stumbled upon a rare wine for her: a Syrah. Our previous tasting of this Helios Syrah was a 2008. For the Fourth of July, our friends brought a magnum of the 2003. It was such a splendid wine. It was showing absolutely no effects of age. Aromatically still very powerful, and super fresh on the palate. It was a little tight at the beginning, but opened up beautifully over the next 15 to 20 minutes. So much fruit, so much acid, nice tannins. She doesn’t make Syrah any longer but you should visit the winery to taste some of the region’s best Cabernet Sauvignon. As a bonus, you’ll get to find out about one of California’s first female winemakers, one of the first (the first?) woman to have her own name on a wine label in California.
