VJB in Kenwood Ca is a family friendly environment. Wonderful wines, appealing Italian deli, fire roasted pizzas from an outdoor kitchen, Boutique Wine Truffle shop, all encased in a Tuscan style courtyard...what else can you ask for? Sonoma Surprises

And so the dossier proclaimed thou shalt start the week in Sonoma. This smaller sibling of Napa doesn’t wear its personality on its sleeve and needs a little conversation to open up. So we started off easy – Chateau St. Jean played the ice-breaker role. Trustworthy wines as always… the pleasantries had now been exchanged and it was time to go a bit deeper.

VJB was unfamiliar territory but eased us in with an unassuming hybrid tasting/coffee bar, walk-in simplicity and a friendly host named Bill. He took us through some Italian-inspired wines that impressed so much we joined the club. We really enjoyed the side-by-side Zinfandel/Primitivo tasting. He introduced us to one of the owners, Henry, and gave us some tips that proved spot-on later in the week.

Tom had prepped us ahead of time with a suggestion to hit Enkidu, admittedly a name easier to dismiss than to visit. Enkidu had a handmade “Back in 30″ sticky on the door, and since we didn’t know if we were on the front or back end of that 30, we stepped in another tasting bar, conveniently located immediately next door. Turns out Ty Caton is a real treat we might never have known had it not been for that Enkidu yellow sticky. Great wines… we took a 2008 Barracks as a memento and reminder to keep him on our radar.

We got back on track with Enkidu and it was worth the wait. Maggie was waiting at the bar as Tom predicted and she lead us through a knowledgeable and very fun tasting of several delicious wines. Unusual and consistent across the board. We had brought a case pack with us which required rationing our purchases, so only buying one Enkidu was tough.

Beyond the pleasant surprises of very eclectic wines (ie, Italians), the other lesson learned in Sonoma (and a lesson that would be confirmed throughout the trip) is not to look down your nose at the “strip mall” tasting rooms. Tree-lined driveways, lush gardens and majestic houses are one of the reasons to visit the Napa Valley, but great wine can be waiting for you in less ostentatious digs. VJB, Ty Caton and Enkidu are all roadside about 10 feet from highway 161 and 30 paces from each other, but that just means you can efficiently park and taste great wine. In fact, Cafe Ceci is between them, so that makes lunch easy (get the polenta bolognese as an app)!
