Technique Tuesday #singing tips
Can a week really fly by so fast? It seems it can. And today is THE day of the week where I encourage #singers to think about vocal technique issues. I’ve been teaching for a long time; but more importantly, I have been putting myself as a singer to the test all the while. And my journey is not complete. Topics come and topics go - and it is always interesting to me who is really, really still listening.
Technique Tuesday has been a ‘thing’ within my business for some time now. It is often tricky to rustle up fresh thought and new teachings. However, as with many disciplines, learning about #singing revolves around a few must-know-about-basics and today, within my mentoring community, I have been teaching about ‘connection’ and the idea of ‘support’. It can be a Catch22.
The idea or notion of ‘support’ is fundamental to producing a good vocal sound. But - what is it? Strike out words that give the feeling of tension or constriction - what we’re after is something quite different. Ease, flow, engagement.
The kind of vocal sound we make starts with the speaking voice - as do all the little foibles we create along the way. Look to the way you speak for those weaknesses and physical stumbles - take care to know what they are so that they do not leach their way into how you produce your singing sound.
Connection is a feeling, it is not a sound. Good vocal sound is a product of a great physical connection to how it feels to be in the vocal moment, fully engaged and ‘singing on the breath’. Any suggestion of vocal fatigue at the end of an evening of singing is a sure sign that all is not as it should be.
