Linktober Day 09: Desert🏜 Riju and Link ☉ Breath of the Wild

MGB Part 1

This is trash. Link grew up Gerudo and is very comfortable with who he is. Zelda is not comfortable with who he is.

There was a line of knights bearing torches every ten feet lighting the pathway and, of course, a queue of men waiting for their turn at the sword. Link kept himself busy with his sharp dagger and a pocketful of apples. He had apples and a hunk of bread and a small cache of roasted acorns. By the time the forest softened from wretched to bountiful he only had a small handful of wildberries left.

"Pull it hard!"

Someone ahead was cheering on each attempt. The words cut through the chatter and Link strained to hear.

"Come on, get a good grip and give it a tug!"

"Maybe it's just thicker than you're used to!"

"Don't tease, just give it a good yank!"

The words got raunchier the longer it went on and Link was hard-pressed to keep his laughter off his face. The other soldiers were putting on a good show of ignoring the shouter. No doubt he would be caught eventually and face some type of punishment. Hylians could be so easily offended sometimes. The smallest mention of intimacy would send them running, you couldn't compliment a woman on anything other than her face which is easily the most boring part of a pretty girl, and worst of all, you had to wear these ridiculous clothes that covered from collarbone to ankle.

Link pulled idly at his collar as the thought of clothing re-emerged in his mind. The line was thankfully moving quickly as soldier after soldier flopped on the ground in exhaustion. The shouter was continuing his jokes ("Maybe give it a twist at the top!") and the current pull-er was keeping an admirably focused look on his face.

"Harder! Harder! So close!"

Then Link was next. A burly man that was likely just below the age limit set by the King gasped in a breath and clutched at his chest dramatically before falling to his knees. Link stepped up and examined the sword for a moment. It was clean and polished, but there was dirt near the ground where the sword was plunged into the stone as if the soldiers had done their best to clean it but couldn't get any deeper into the ground. The rare purple dyes decorating the hilt looked new, though they were likely to be as old as the sword. It was sharp too, and that seemed to be true all the way into the ground.

"Come on now soldier, you look like you have some experience in yanking on a sword."

The comment was whispered in Link's ear and he looked around suspiciously at the surrounding soldiers. None of them looked guilty. He planted his feet firmly on the ground and whispered a small prayer to the seven that he wouldn't faint as many of the men had done. Careful not to overdo it - it would be equally embarrassing to pull his shoulder out of socket - Link placed his hands on the grip and gave it a gentle testing tug.

It pulled smoothly out of the ground and seemed to almost lift his hand to the sky.

"Ah, excellent, Master. I thought you might have a good hand for jerking a handle."

Link's eyes widened comically where he was looking up at the glowing sword. It had been the shouter. He had an inappropriate sword. He turned his head to the other soldiers and none seemed to have made the connection yet.

"Shhh!" he whispered furtively. "You'll get us in trouble."

"Don't be ridiculous!" The sword's voice rang out in the clearing, "This is a solo adventure, my friend. No one will hear us go at it!"
