What about antiquity is a red flag? Doesn’t that usually refer to interest in history much further back (i.e. Greco-Roman history)?
It should be very well known by now that many fascists and especially the ones that focus on ‘trad’ subculture have a fetish for a conceptual prelapsarian society-- they look backwards “before the fall of Man.”
Put simply, they think that ancient human cultures were unspoiled by what they consider modern ‘degeneracy.’ Back when Men were Men, Women were Women, and all world populations Stayed in Their Places, etc.
Sad white people alienated by a lack of success in their current surroundings are easily swayed by calls back to some Ancient Significance, to be a part of something ‘greater’ than their routine of work-buy shit-party-sleep-die. The weird obsession with genealogy or ‘ancestral way of life’ is related to this, and many budding fascists cloak their opinions in “study of antiquities” or “looking for their roots.”
Even the historical nazis absolutely hated modern art and architecture, instead coveting and actively looting artifacts from the renaissance, the Roman Empire, classical sculpture, Fine Art(tm), etc. They’d burn a Picasso but exalt the Mona Lisa-- they both had to be hidden for different reasons. Today, ‘postmodernism’ (that has nothing to do with actual postmodern movements in philosophy and art) is their buzzword for art and culture artifacts that do not fit their favored aesthetic of ancestral white power and glory.
Other than images of beauty (especially the White Female beauty) they are drawn to ancient warlike iconography and will endlessly portray themselves as Crusaders, Spartans, Legionnaires ready to fight against the barbaric hordes, etc.
Most historians that specialize in roman, greek classical, and other ancient histories encounter and are repulsed by modern fascists lurking in their field. It’s a real problem. There are many indigenous european cultures that have been suppressed by dominant ones, and it is incredibly hard to study like... roman period basque coins or 5th century bretons with the fash winking slyly around every corner like “hey just looking for proof we’re the master race , dtf?”
Most adult people interested in the ancient world clearly state what they are interested in and why, and do not couch their interest in “antiquities.”
If you want to learn more about Nazi dog whistles and the motivations behind them, here’s a good and fun place to start.
