The Importance of Good Localization (aka: I, an Adam Metroid Fan, don't know who he is anymore)
a very hinged post by volt voltoise
Hi chat. So as an addendum to last week's slightly (very) ramble-y liveblogging over the Japanese script of Other M, I've come to realize that they just didn't know what they were suppose to localize Adam Malkovich as huh?
This all started when I made the mistake of going on TV Tropes, known waster of all time of my time, and seeing these under Adam's page:
So that was interesting already. I decided to confirm this (which prompted the four hours of tumblr analysis on Other M. Fun things to do on a ??? night.) And uh. Yeah TV Tropes is sorta right! I wouldn't have described the English dub quite like that (mostly the ironic part about "Lady", and also Samus does mention the parental figure thing in Japanese but less).
Adam in the original script is blunt and gruff, but also less antagonistic to Samus. He also has a bit of snark, which lines up with Dread, and shockingly the manga. In the localization, he's softer, except not really towards Samus because he's colder to her. This is because the localization sucks and also makes Samus more dependent on Adam's opinion. (That's a rant for 3 months ago in an audio recording. that zero suit video is coming i swear.)
As a metroid fan who's brain chemistry was irreversibly changed by Other M in middle school (for better or worse), I've been more familiar with Localized Adam. Contextually, this made sense with the rest of the series given That One Scene, aka Sector Zero, aka the one I memorized in middle school. Fusion's ending makes sense in that context.
That said, I always found it intriguing that AI Adam is a lot more blunt than (Localized) Adam. My headcanon was that he's just less restricted in what he can say when he's not Being Professional. However, Original Script Adam aligns MUCH better with both Fusion and Other M, so suddenly, him being more sarcastic and blunt is in character.
So case closed, I can adapt to the "canon" version, it's whatever, he's still very strange like why his office like that. wh what have you seen it?
Is this another visual metaphor? Because I don't actually care, this is funnier if it's real.
Anyway, adapting to canon blah blah he's more blunt that he is/less explictly soft as his localized counterpart yeah I can vibe with it.
Except then there's parts of the manga.
Now, normally, he's in line with the original script!
Here's Adam walking away when Chief Hardy is in a yelling match (iconic, he just Simply Leaves), and Adam bluntly, but sympathetically, giving Samus time to try to save the Chozo on Zebes.
also Adam and Samus staring silently while the yelling match is going on is peak neurodivergent communication/POS
There's also the Best Adam Moment Ever™ where he restates an insult back to Kreatz but completely deadpan.
he's iconic.
So that's normal! That's good! And then they drop these lines on us in the last manga chapters.
why did he say that first page??? is he stupid????/HJJJJJJ
So this feels more in-line with Localized Adam, right? Like. Like that's a weird thing to say out of nowhere for Original Script Adam, right??? Not to be all "he would not say that", because he just did, and I don't think he's trying to be misogynistic I think this is a chivalry/"this is definitely a good normal thing to say" moment. But this and the fact that in original script Fusion/Other M, Samus doesn't like the Lady nickname. What? Huh?
Uh so. Anyway.
TLDR: what??? huh??? do they just not know how to write this guy consistantly??? also how will this effect the trout population.
Prime 4 Samus voice SFX dropped and uh oh
Alright I don't have any problems with new tagalong characters in Prime 4. Let the series try something different, let Samus interact with people. However I HAVE discovered something to nitpick about the voice direction.
Here's the new damage sfx for Samus in Prime 4. (If you're wondering how I even found this, I was looking to see if there was new game over footage. I'm hoping that the demo one was a placeholder because I'm in denial). Do you notice something off? Because I do. And OH BOY it's bothering me.
This is in no way an insult to whoever voices Samus in Prime 4, but rather a critique of the direction. And that is, hey why is her voice that high and that... I don't know, scream-y? In the original prime trilogy, Dread, and heck, even Other M, Samus has consistently had a voice in the middle range. Furthermore, her damage sfx in the trilogy are subdued to a degree. For reference:
Samus, here, is obviously reacting to getting shot with Massive Laser Beam. I'm not faulting her for that. But she's reacting as if she's pushing through the pain, or even trying to brush off the hit as if it's routine.
We even get a number of death screams, see video above or Other M's game over. In Dread we get full lines from Samus, and more importantly, her screaming in rage for like 10 seconds straight:
And it is no where NEAR the voice in Prime 4. I don't have the words to describe what's off about Prime 4's rendition other than it's too high? Too screechy? I can accept the first clip in the video for angst reasons, but the other two sound like someone who's never been in combat before.
I guess this doesn't really matter, but I think the misdirection in Samus' Prime 4 voice might take me out of the game a bit. Anyway that's me over-nitpicking the voice of a quiet protagonist. If she has any full lines in Prime 4, we'll see if the chosen VA does Samus justice there. And if not, please do not harass the VA. It's not their fault. Don't harass the vocal director either. Anyway.
Casual reminder that Ford encounters the grim reaper twice in Journal 3. The first time he just casually outruns it, and the second, his immediate reaction is to shine a blacklight on him.
And yes I know he mentions that the Grim Reaper is less deadly than other category ten's, but from at least a symbolic point, Ford outruns/avoid "death" twice before the portal incident. At least in the show's timeline, it's kind of an indication of what he'll end up doing for the next thirty years.
Ok so the life-size Gardevoir plush is like objectively a mistake (not for the company, oh they're gonna make MONEY off of it), but I maintain that the ideal audience for this plush is like 6 to 10 year olds.
Like, there is some kid out there who's favorite Pokémon is Gardevoir who would adore a 5' 3" Gardevoir plush that they can play dress up with. Guys you don't understand you could put a HAT on it!! A HAT.
Unfortunately, the plush is $450 and the only people buying Gardevoir for that price are adults. Luckily I'm sure that some of those Gardevoirs are going to homes where they will be surrounded by other Pokémon-or-other plushies and treated like (plushie) royalty.
Alright you know what time it is
That's right it's the time that I make a prompt list and the name is just tradition at this point. Rules blah blah have fun, don't burn out, and tag me maybe or don't
