Lance McClain so flirts by putting his arm around the back of someone’s chair

Ok, once and for all, this is how it goes:

Lance is super insecure. Like he does not believe in himself. Hes full of imposter syndrome. Why is he at this school? Why is he in the fighter pilot class? Surely it’s just dumb luck. He manipulated his way in here. For sure.

Then the blue lion picks him and he lets himself get his hopes up that he was picked for a reason. But then he hears Allura explain what all the other lions are for and all he can do is imagine her saying “and the blue lion picks whoever’s left over” so he jokes it away. He let himself think he was special for a moment. Cant let that happen again. At least now he knows for sure he’s the leftovers.

Then Shiro disappears. And everyone breaks. Hunk just cooks, constantly, and doesnt stop. He has blisters on his hands. He says it’s for everyone else, to make sure they’re fed, but Lance sees through it. Pidge is locked in their workshop trying to track down Shiro. Everyone else silently hopes theyre right and lets them continue, but Lance doesnt even care if they’re right. Either way, this will be the death of them. Obsessing like that isnt healthy. Allura just stays in her room most of the time. You’d think this was a good thing, since shes finally taking a break, but Lance knows her. This is unprecedented. She wouldn’t stop fighting unless it was really bad. And Keith? Hes crying. As in, actually crying. Like, tears. Yeah.

And then on top of that they still have shit to fight. So Lance helps Hunk with his stress-cooking. Doing all the things that are hard on your hands. Hes not very good at following instructions but at least he can make Hunk laugh. He sits with Pidge and asks them what they’re doing. It’s starts with mildly annoyed one word answered, but soon he has them monologuing about some component he can’t even pronounce the name of. He challenges Keith to fights again, and he refuses at first, but Lance simply drags him to the training deck and chucks a sword at him and starts sparring. Keith is committed to the nonchalant bit and keeps blocking his attacks while remaining as impassive as possible. Doesn’t work for long tho. Soon theyre sparring like old times. And Keith’s gotten some physical activity in. And Allura? Lance just gives her one big, long hug. And then another. And another. Whatever free time he has after everyone else he just spends watching altean romcoms in her room, letting her cry on his shoulder.

All this is just about enough to get everyone in the common room to have The Conversation. Who takes the black lion? Everyone argues. Pidge says they should have it. Hunk says he should do it. Allura thinks she should lead for real. Lance wants it too, because despite how hard of a time everyone’s having he still needs the validation. Maybe once hes black paladin, he’ll finally stop feeling like a fraud. But alas,

God, he feels so sorry for Keith. The one person who didnt wanna do this. But Shiro said so, so maybe Lance should have some faith. Keith will live up to the role eventually. Surely.

Oh well. He knew he would never be black paladin. At least he still has blue, right?

*blowing dust off the headcanon lists*

Well, guess who’s back with the Voltron brain juice! Sometimes I wish people included more tidbits about what the VLD characters would miss about home (*cough cough* Me, I need to start doing more of that *cough*) So! To make up for it, here are things I think each member of the cast would miss about their homes while in space or living post-war :]

Starting with Keith, my beloved. I think most of the fandom has agreed he’s some flavor of Southern, so I think he would miss certain aspects of life in the South. He’d probably miss his dad’s homemade cornbread because that’s the only thing his dad made that tasted perfect and wasn’t burnt. He’d miss being able to go outside and catch tons of freaky critters like spiky lizards, massive grasshoppers/locusts, geckos, and the occasional snake. He’d miss the wood grain in his cabin’s floorboards and how they would thunk and creak satisfyingly when he walked over them. He’d probably miss the nighttime crickets and fireflies the most, though. Falling asleep to chirping during the spring and summer just hits different. Bonus points if you’re in a hammock and there’s a warm, gentle breeze.

Lance obviously misses the beach, his family, and his mom’s garlic knots, but I also think he misses all the people. He misses the hustle and bustle of humans and the sound of human voices chattering. He misses the before-rain smell and after-rain smell on Earth, where everything smells distinctly fresh and earthy. He misses how the humidity and salt of the coast would make his hair fluff up and curl without any need for product or water. My boy probably misses fruit desperately, too. Bananas, cherries, mangoes, oranges, pears, you name it, he probably misses it. He misses Earth animals like dogs, cats, birds, chickens, cows. I think he’d be really good with the domesticated animals back on Earth. Kaltenecker helps some, but the feeling never goes away completely. Waking up without birdsong makes his heart ache with homesickness after a while.

Going with the headcanon that Pidge is Italian, or at least partially Italian, I imagine she’d miss her mom’s ravioli and the ravioli specifically because the texture of the pasta was never right when any restaurants or other people made it. She probably misses the outrageous soda flavors companies would come out with and trying the ones that sound vaguely good and interesting. She misses tricking Matt into drinking the horrible flavors just to see the shock and disgust spread across his face. She misses the security and comfort of her mom’s hugs and when her dad would teasingly ruffle her hair. She misses pulling all-nighters and looking up from her computer with mild shock to see the sun rising through her window. She’d probably also miss all the Earth spices. As hard as Hunk tries to recreate food from Earth using their space resources, it just never tastes quite right and it bugs her to no end.

Similarly with Hunk, I think it pisses him off that nothing ever tastes quite right while he’s recreating Earth food in space. He falls into spirals once or twice worrying that maybe he’ll forget what the food back home tastes like. He also misses his family’s voices and worries about forgetting those too. He freaks out when he realizes he can’t quite remember his mom’s laugh and spends a few hours one night trying to get it perfect. He most definitely misses baking with his mom and tasting the batter when she wasn’t looking. Hunk misses being able to sprawl out on the ground outside and feel the sun tanning his face. The suns of other planets are either too cold or too hot to perfectly match what Earth’s feels like. He probably misses the feeling of paper and pencil from Earth. Just the texture of the items. Other planets have similar kinds, but their manufacturing processes are always slightly to the left no matter how close to Earth paper it looks and he doesn’t like it.

Shiro misses the sunsets from Earth—especially the ones in the desert. He always thought they were beautiful, and while he’s seen plenty of beautiful sunsets across the universe, the ones from back home came with a sense of security he no longer has and he desperately wants it back. I feel like he also misses the smell of his car. There’s something about how when a space belongs to someone, it gains their scent alongside the scent of whatever else they bring into that space. Shiro’s car definitely smelled like him, but it also smelled faintly like Adam’s cologne and tools from all the times Shiro had to fix something on the fly (Shiro seems like the type to own a dinosaur of a truck, that thing definitely needed repairs). There’s also a small burn mark from the first few months after he first met Keith from Keith fucking around with a… borrowed lighter and being a tiny pyromaniac, giving Shiro a near heart attack.

Allura obviously misses a lot about Altea, but I think her family, the planet itself, and the security of the place are what get to her the most. She misses the juniberries and the yelmors and the mountains. She even misses their fucked up boiling rock rain. She misses the massive oceans that covered her planet’s surface and their endless depths that positively teemed with life. She misses feeling secure, like she has a place in the universe, like she’s tethered to something. Out in space ten thousand years after the decimation of her home, she is always an interloper. The universe has no need for an Altean queen when there are no Alteans to rule. She is only as good as what she can provide to these people who moved on without her for literal millennia. She misses having parents who could definitively reassure her that she was making the right decisions, that her people loved and admired her, that she was doing amazing with her studies and would become an excellent monarch. As much as she loves Coran, needs him as a parental figure, clings to him as her last living tie to home, he’s not her father. He’s not her mother. He’s not Altea. There is a planet-sized hole in Allura’s chest that, when touched, whispers echoes of deep blue oceans and rolling waves of green juniberry leaves.

I think Coran misses the people themselves and their planet’s history more than Allura did. Like obviously Allura misses her family and friends and losing your entire planet after being told you’d be taking care of those people your entire life is devastating, but I think she wasn’t as in-tune with the people as Coran might’ve been. Coran seems like the type of guy to stop by the neighborhood open air market and make small talk with the vendors, catching up with them and getting genuinely invested in their lives. I think he was far more intwined with the lives of those around him, and that the loss might’ve hit him more because he had a greater scope of everything they lost. So yeah, he misses the people. He misses the baker and his wife and their newest child. He misses the elderly woman selling her crafts at the market who just got a third grandchild. He misses the gaggle of teens that always hung out in a crystal shop on the corner but never bought anything, and how the shop owner was exasperatedly fond of all of them. He misses the thousands of years of Altean history that got burned to a crisp—millions of intricate details about different Altean cultures wiped out in a flash. The castle’s achieves don’t measure up to even a fraction of what once was. Coran make sure to add whatever he can remember to the archives so at least some version of what he spent a good portion of his life studying is preserved.

Woah, this got long. Did not expect to delve into the Alteans as much as I did, but I’m honestly kind of glad I did? We get so little info about Altea in the show that I have a tendency to neglect them TvT
