Now I'm just laughing at the thought of Adam being in DLS and coming on the castle and seeing Ryou first, going to greet him thinking he's Shiro and Ryou having to acrobat away like ''woah, hey no, wrong Shirogane hun'
Oh my GOD yes. The pure awkwardness.
The group of them arrives together and gives a condensed, Garrison-appropriate explanation of their past couple of years. About at the point of ‘yeah Ryou’s a clone that was meant to spy on us but we fixed it he’s good now’, Ryou starts hovering by the wall next to the door. He gets a bunch of looks like ‘is he trying to escape’ so he starts looking at the ceiling to ignore them, but he can’t really afford to go off on anyone right now, and Shiro’s already glowering like a bear in early spring so he’s just gunna… hang out for a bit.
Which is when he hears running footsteps, and the door bursts open. Adam pushes his way in, breathing a little heavier than normal, eyes wild, as he looks around the room.
And the beacon of white hair and shining white armor catches his eyes first.
It takes a second for Adam to look him over and to see the face, not just the differences. The blank, curious confusion gives way to recognition, and then relief.
“Takashi,” he breathes, then pulls Ryou into a fierce, desperate hug.
Ryou goes stiff, mostly at the name, but then gently pats him on the back. No matter how it ended, this was Shiro’s (his) would-be fiance and he’s so clearly happy to see Shiro back and okay that it would be cruel to push him back.
That is, until Adam, with red-rimmed, desperate eyes, leans up for a kiss.
That’s when Ryou has to get his prosthesis between their mouths, eyes wide. “Woah, there. Hold up.” His eyes dart sideways to the entire room full of military officers, from Lieutenants to Colonels, as well as his team and his brother, who’s watching like he’s turned to stone.
“Oh,” Adam says. He swallows and pulls back. “You’re right. I have no business…”
“I mean, you kinda don’t,” Ryou agrees, then winces. “No, I mean you have the wrong guy. I’m Ryou. Hi.” He gives a little wave, then drops it when Adam just stares at him in pure confusion. So Ryou sighs and points over at Shiro. “That’s the guy you want.”
So Adam looks over and sees a second Shiro, this one wearing black-accented armor, and with half his hair still his natural black. But still in an alien uniform, still with one arm replaced by a metal version, and still with that nasty, gashing scar over his nose.
Adam stares. Blinks. Looks at Ryou again, then back at Shiro. “I see.”
He does not see.
Ryou gently takes his shoulders and leads him to an empty chair, then pushes him till he sits. “Just hang tight for the rest of the explanation, okay? We’ll give you the cliffnotes version after.” He gestures for everyone to keep going.
Shiro is still staring like a deer in the headlights.
A nudge from Keith snaps him back to reality, but Shiro keeps darting glances over when Allura picks up the story.
“He’s alive,” Adam breathes, too quiet for anyone else in the room to hear.
But Ryou hears it.
“Yeah, he’s alive.” Ryou squeezes his shoulder. “Despite everything that was supposed to hurt him. You know Shiro’s too stubborn for that.”
Adam’s breath stutters. He rubs under his eyes like he’s just scratching an itch, but he’s never fooled anyone with that particular move. At least, never Shiro, and now never Ryou. “Yeah.” He swallows hard, then looks at Ryou with a thin, sad smile. “I was an asshole.”
“Yeah, you were.” The wound is old, isn’t even Ryou’s, but it still aches when prodded. “But so’s Shiro, sometimes. If you do a good job apologizing, he’ll forgive you sooner rather than later.”
Adam gives a thin, trembling smile, then nods. He leans over, so his shoulder presses against Ryou’s.
Ryou allows him this, allows him the support. Forgiveness isn’t the same thing as undoing the past, but Adam knows that. Closure is what they both need.
Closure is what Ryou’s getting, in his own little way. Adam was never his, despite the constant tug of his memories. The smell of him is the same, the press of his body familiar. If Ryou closes his eyes, he can recall with perfect clarity how it would feel to run both his hands down Adam’s chest to his hips.
In a way, the abrupt end of the relationship is a boon. It was over, so Ryou never had to give up his hope and future for this man. When he became his own person, Adam was someone he’d already let go of.
Whatever happens next, Ryou’s there to support Shiro through it.
But for now, he can offer Adam a shoulder too. For old time’s sake.
AM I TO LATE.?
