you had lost hope long ago for any chance of escape. with each attempt, you found yourself taking one step forward and two steps back, getting a little closer to freedom, only to get caught and have all the little cracks you tried to slip through in this impenetrable fortress fixed. with each attempt, his trust in you dwindled, and he would be watching you at all hours of the day to ensure that you wouldn’t try to leave his grasp again. with each attempt, you lost the energy and brain power to plot out these escapes which were becoming more elaborate than the last, frazzling your mind until you were too burnt out to string together steps of a coherent plan. 

despite your apparent rebellion, your captor has surprisingly never punished you once. the most he’s ever done was chain you up and lock you in a room. even then, the room had all you needed: a working bathroom with hot water, a drawer full of your favorite snacks and drinks, a bookshelf that took up the majority of the wall with novels of all genres to keep you from getting bored. he really did care for you, didn’t he? in his own special, fucked up, way that drove him to kidnap you and keep you in his home against his will. you’ll never understand him, and you doubt you would ever be able to convince him that his attachment to you is unhealthy or to get professional help or to let you go, but slowly, you find yourself starting to care for him. dare you say you’re starting to spiral into something more as the days go by?

mornings with shu are always lethargic. he never wants to get up before nine after spending most of his young life waking up at six in the morning for school, and always whines like a child if you want to get up. he pulls you closer to him, the addicting scent of your floral shampoo filling his senses, “noooo, don’t leave yet.” despite how calm and clever he usually is, he can certainly be immature when it comes to waking up in the morning.

“i’m bored lying in bed, i wanna do something.”

“just five more minutes… it’s still too early,” he was already on the verge of dozing off again. you don’t even know what he did last night to warrant such exhaustion, but knowing him, he was probably up playing valorant again, even though you’ve been nagging him to go to bed at a reasonable time.

“i’ll make you breakfast?”

“what kind?”

“whatever you want.”

he hummed in thought, moving to place a kiss on your cheek. instead of pulling away like you usually do, you found yourself leaning more into it. this wasn’t as bad as you remember it being. you remember feeling sick to your stomach each time you woke up in his arms, but that feeling has now been replaced with butterflies and a warm, fuzzy sensation that you had forgotten. how strange was that?

“could i have waffles?”

“maybe in five more minutes…”

it’s difficult to remember sometimes that someone as sweet and golden retriever-like as luca (excluding the consideration of all he’s done to you) can be a mafia boss, one whose name strikes terror in the hearts of tens of thousands at that. you’ve never really seen that side of him, and you aren’t sure if you want to. he hides it from you, you can tell. every time you fight back or attempt to escape, you see a dangerous look flash in his eyes before he pushes down his temper and goes back to doing what you can only compare to gentle parenting. 

sometimes, he’ll take you out for business endeavors because he realized he couldn’t bear the thought of being separated from you for too long. he’ll have you dressed up all pretty in an outfit that matches his suit and take you out for meetings with other executives. you never say a word unless he speaks to you, asking you if you were bored or if you wanted anything, and you speculate the others in the room have strict orders not to talk to you. luca will always be more kind when you’re around, but today, one of his men seems to enjoy testing his patience. 

you don’t think he’s just being nice when he compliments how good you look, not when he keeps getting too close to you for comfort and persistently trying to strike up conversation when you’re giving him nothing more than three-word responses at a time. after a while, your distress became apparent to your lover (lover, calling him that sounds strange. when did you consider him to be a romantic partner rather than an abductor?).

the man is visibly nervous when luca makes his way towards the two of you, his gaze flickering to the mafia boss’s arm possessively snaking around your waist with a look on his face that knew he fucked up. 

“is he bothering you?” he looks angry, terrifyingly so. there’s nothing more scary than someone who was all smiles most of the time being so furious. 

“a little bit.” the reply isn’t like you. had it been you from a month or two ago, you would be upset at his jealousy and obvious mindset of you being his possession, but at the moment, none of that seemed to matter to you as you rested your head on the side of his chest. 

with a simple snap of his fingers, two guards in all black escorted him off the premises. at least, that’s what luca told you as he insisted on leaving early and spending the rest of the day elsewhere. you wondered if the man actually got killed for his audacity, but you didn’t really care.

he either creates feasts for you to eat or throws together something and calls it a day, but either way, it’s usually delicious. the weather is nice today, not too sunny with a gentle breeze, so the two of you shared lunch outside in the garden. occasionally a bird would perch nearby and try to steal a piece of bread, but you weren’t really paying it any mind. all of your attention was on ike who was excitedly talking about his new upcoming novel.

it’s cute how animated he becomes when talking about something he was passionate about, waving his hands around and making gestures to match his words, emphasizing some parts of the story that he’s particularly proud of. he’s so creative with his plots and meticulous regarding the details. he truly was born with a talent for writing, and it was so admirable how he didn’t let anything dampen his spirit like deadlines or monetizing his work.  

“i don’t wanna sound too self-centered, but did you base the main character off of me?”

a blooming red suddenly appeared on his pale face, “is it that obvious?”

“well, it’s just that the way you describe her sounds a lot like me.”

he was taken aback. you’ve never listened to him talk about his stories before. you always treated it like it was a mandatory lecture, mind far away from the present, and thinking of nothing other than how much you would rather be free instead. now, you were engaged with him, taking part in the conversation and asking questions.. he was so close to giving up, thinking that he would never be able to develop a normal relationship with you after all he’s done, but his patience has been rewarded, and it made him so happy he could have cried on the spot.

you can’t quite remember the last time you’ve seen the news. you used to watch it every day, every morning with breakfast, and every evening after work, but you haven’t even watched television since you got taken until now, a few months later. vox didn’t want you to have any reminders that you were kidnapped by seeing your name along the others in the missing persons list they often showed, but they probably thought you were dead at this point and moved on, so here you were, sitting in his lap and learning about everything currently happening.

although your mind wasn’t really focused on processing the new information. it’s not like any of it mattered when you were shut away from the rest of the world. you sighed, rolling your head back on the demon’s shoulder, “can we watch something else?”

“really? you used to beg me to see the news.”

“that was weeks ago,” you groaned. “i don’t really see the point of it anymore.”

it’s a surprise to him, but he wasn’t complaining. it meant you had given up on the idea of becoming a part of society again and were content with how things were now. he used to only dream of a defining moment like this, one where it was made clear you were entirely his. he placed a tender kiss on your forehead and patted your hair, “well then, do you want to watch another episode of that show you’re so invested in?”

“yeah… that sounds nice.”

this was all your life was reduced to now, just watching shows and reading books and playing games and spending time with vox, but you realize that you didn’t hate it as much as you used to.

the big city never seems to sleep with its bright lights and never-ceasing traffic, and neither does he despite the fact he’s been working before dawn. while he can be rather careless and inattentive to most things in life, he’s never negligent when it comes to you and his perplexing job as a detective. he rarely shows you anything other than his cheerful and silly side, but in between, when he doesn’t think you’re watching, you notice the heavy bags under his eyes from tedious hours of paperwork and constant yawning. you know he refuses to show weakness around you because a part of him is still wary of you trying to escape again, but tonight, you have no ulterior motives for your concerns. 

“mysta, come to bed,” you call out, watching him work, and reaching out your arm to his side of the bed to feel the cold silk sheets below. 

“just to sleep first,” he answered simply, not turning his head to look at you once, “i’ll be there in a bit.”

it’s a lie you’ve heard so many times, one that you no longer find yourself naively believing in when you spent too many nights slipping away into slumber only to wake up finding him asleep at his desk. you slowly got off the bed and leisurely strolled over to where he sat, placing your hands on his shoulders which stole his attention as he looked up at you with his usually sparkly blue eyes looking more dull than ever. “please? just for tonight?”

he pursed his lips together, clearly hesitant. people are depending on him to crack this case, coming to him as a last resort and accepting his rather high employment costs, knowing he was the only one who could figure it out after it went cold for months. he didn’t want to let anyone down, and he needed all the available time he had dedicated to catching the criminal. 

oh, but you look so worried for him. he’s never seen that before; he’s only ever seen you look at him with contempt, fear, or nothing at all. it’s so different, and he isn’t sure how he feels about the pang in his heart that reminds him that you were truly the one who held the power in the relationship. 

“alright, but i’ll need to get up early tomorrow to finish this.”

“that’s okay, i just need you to take a break. with how much you were flipping the pages around, you were at a dead end anyway. you’ll have a fresh mind and will figure it out when you wake up.”

he was out like a light as soon as he hit the soft mattress, evidence of just how hard he’s been working. you poked at him a few times, planning to tell him to move to a side a bit since he was taking up the majority of the bed, but he didn’t stir in the slightest. 

this was your chance. he didn’t set an alarm or anything, meaning he would likely be asleep until noon tomorrow given how exhausted he is. you could try to escape right now as long as you’re quiet. you’ve been waiting weeks for an opportunity like this, and it was sitting in your lap waiting for you to pick it up. 

yet you didn’t leave. you didn’t have it in you. despite having every right to run away and achieve stolen freedom, you felt like you were abandoning him, the very man who ripped you away from your life to force you to be his lover.

you’re sure that you will regret this at some point in the future, but when you lay down on the bed next to him, pulling yourself closer to his body, you feel a sense of peace that you thought you would never feel again.
