Seung-Hui Cho (조승희) was born on January 18, 1984 in Asan, South Korea. He had medical problems as a baby. At three years old, Cho had to have a cardiac procedure which seemingly led to his dislike of being touched. It is said that this procedure was rather traumatizing for cho.

He lived in Seoul, South Korea until he was 8 years old. He moved to the United States of America in 1992. Cho would be a legal permanent resident of the United States, but he was not a United States citizen. Cho lived in several different places before they eventually moved to Fairfax County, Virginia. Cho was a pretty quiet boy growing up. He did not talk much at all, he was eventually diagnosed with selective mutism by the eighth grade. He would not make eye contact and was unaffectionate. Cho worried many people because of his behaviors. He was not only like this at home, he was like this towards everyone. At school, he would stay by himself. He was very good in academics. He did not seem to like school very much as a young child, but he eventually got better about going to school, no longer having meltdowns about attending.

Cho attended: Poplar Tree Elementary School, Ormond Stone Middle School, and Westfield High School, and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.

During high school, specifically his freshman year (9th grade or year 10), the Columbine Highschool Massacre occurred. Cho would write a school assignment about “wanting to emulate columbine”.This obviously caused concern and led to Cho going to a psychiatrist. It is said that Cho was bullied over a multitude of things, anything from his behaviors to his race. Since Cho had selective mutism, he would receive accommodations at school around 2001. He had an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) which allowed for Cho to not have to participate in anything orally. This means that cho did not have to speak in class, discuss with classmates, and he could receive alternative assignments to meet requirements necessary to pass the class. Cho graduated from Westfield Highschool in 2003. He then chose to attend Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University also known as Virginia Tech. Cho was told that this university may not be a good fit for him, but cho did not care and decided to enroll. It was believed it may not be a good fit for him because of the school's size. Cho was originally a business information technology major but he would change to an english major in order to become a writer. He made this shift during his sophomore year (2nd year) at the college. It is to be noted that Virginia Tech was unaware of his mental health problems and Cho was not receiving treatment for his diagnosed issues at this time. He was evaluated once and I will detail that later. During his time at the college, he took many writing courses. Several of his stories and poems have been archived. In October of 2005, he was in class and overheard some students talking about eating animals. Cho found it disturbing and decided to write an essay detailing his dissatisfaction. Cho would then apparently read this essay in front of the class. The essay was responded to with a letter from professor Nikki Giovanni, who taught the creative writing class that this incident happened in.

In college, cho had many problems with classmates. He behaved oddly towards female students, he would act angrily towards others. He had done many things that caused students to think he was strange. A lot of students called him question mark kid since he had signed his name as “?” on a sheet. He just could not fit in, but he was not trying very hard to improve on behaviors that could be perceived as odd. Cho would still have people to talk to, roommates, and he would go to parties, where he would not behave the best.

Why Cho was evaluated: Cho was reported over comments that he made that lead to a friend believing he may be suicidal. This happened the same day that Cho was reported by a female student over unwanted messages, December 12th, 2005. Cho was evaluated at New River Community Services and then was sent to Carilion St. Alban's Behavioral Health Center. He was still able to buy a gun after this.

Other facts about Cho: he sold and bought rubber ducks on ebay

he liked the song Shine by Collective Soul

he wrote a story called Mr. Brownstone that was inspired by the song by guns n roses

His photos sent to the news were recreated by the perpetrator in the realengo massacre, and he cited cho as inspiring him.

Many girls on campus complained about cho being creepy towards them.

He wrote a story called “The Adventure of Spanky” by Spanky I. In the story there is a girl named Jelly who Seung-hui would allegedly tell people was his girlfriend at parties.

His guns were legally obtained. They were a .22-caliber Walther P22 (bought from a gun shop) and a 9mm Glock 19(bought online) .

He was 23 at the time of the shooting, a senior at Virginia Tech.

Gun laws became stricter after this.

April 16th, 2007: Seung-Hui Cho is seen at his computer at 5 am by his roommate. He starts his day as he would regularly. He gets dressed and leaves around 5:30 am. He stands outside the West Ambler Johnston hall at 6:47 am. At 7:02 am, Emily Hilscher arrives after her boyfriend dropped her off. She heads up to her room. Cho would kill her and Ryan Clark (the RA) in her dorm room at 7:15 am. At 7:17, Cho was back at the Harper hall, where he lived. During this time, police were called because of the noise. It was believed a student, Emily Hilscher, fell from a loft bed and was injured. The police arrived 4 minutes after the call occurred. The call was made at 7:20 am and an officer was on the scene at 7:24 am. The students were found and more police were sent out to the college. 7:25 am, cho’s email account and files were wiped and a minute later, additional police arrive at the college and they go to Emily's room. An investigation is opened and the school is notified. Emily’s boyfriend became a suspect since he had dropped her off. Nobody saw Cho or any person who could be a suspect in the murder. At 8:25, they discuss telling students about the murders. Cho went and dropped off a package at the post office at 9:01 am. The package was meant to go to nbc new york and it was his manifesto, photos of himself, and video tapes. Classes began at 8:00 am and the second period started at 9:05 am. Around 9:24 am, the police found Karl Thornhill , Emily's boyfriend, off campus. At 9:26, an email was sent out about the shooting of Emily and Ryan. At 9:40 am, Cho arrived at the morris hall and he chained the doors shut, placing a note on a door that implied a bomb threat. It was found soon after. At 9:46, the shooting continued. Cho went into a class teaching advanced hydrology engineering and began to shoot at everyone inside. He killed 9 students and a professor. He leaves and shoots at 4 people while he was in the hallway. He headed into a German classroom and he began to shoot, killing 4 students and the professor and injuring 6 students. Classes were barricaded. 2 more professors were shot while trying to investigate the noises. He entered a French class and killed 11 students and the professor after he had broken through the barricade. 6 students were injured. He then left and went back to the first classroom he attacked. He killed an already injured student and then returned to the German classroom, where nobody was killed because of the barricaded door. He attempts to enter another classroom, where he is unable to make it in because the door was being blocked. Students jumped from the window and when cho made it in, he shot and killed a professor and student by shooting them in the head. He then shot and injured 2 more students and went back to the first classroom. He went back to the French classroom soon after. This is when the SWAT team got through the chains. They moved in and it was easy to hear them. Cho shot himself in the head and ended his life instantly. The shooting ended around 10:08 am. He killed 32 people and injured 17 before taking his own life. 6 others were injured while fleeing through a window.
