(At least for my rewrite)

After Katelyn becomes part of the Jury of Nine, her family moves to O'hkasis and is brought up in the world. Wanting to be like his sister and help support the family, Kacey goes through the guard program and eventually is recruited into O'khasis' guard. Maybe he's a normal guard, maybe he's a specialized guard, regardless, he's around the Ro'meave family.

This leads him to be around the prevalent Vylad Ro'meave, and they end up getting along decently well. The pair end up spending time together, with Vylad kind of taking Kacey under his wing initially. They both have heavy expectations on them, (Vylad to make himself useful as the bastard Ro'meave child, and Kacey to live up to the expectations Katelyn set) and they bond over that, over how there's no pressure or expectations between them. They sneak out of O'hkasis together, train together (with Kacey tending to take more of the mentor role, as he has proper training), and, to the best of their ability, protect each other. They become something of each other's safe space, and maybe even have a secret relationship. At the very least, there are definitely feelings there.

Eventually though, Kacey ends up being sent away from O'hkasis for multiple days. Maybe for a specialized mission from Garte, maybe to get more guard training. Either way, when he comes back, he learns of Vylad's death, and it destroys him. He blames himself, but still, he continues on as a guard of O'hkasis.

Perhaps by serving Vylad's family, he will still be serving him in spirit. Even if, by serving them, he's losing himself in the process.
