In honor of the holidays, I'm posting a holiday break-up song. The song isn't just about Christmas time. It's about how the holidays and wanting someone to be with you can really keep you stuck. There isn't a "good" time to break up until St. Patrick's Day.
I remember when the first guy to break my heart dumped me the day before my thesis defense. I was appalled by his disregard for what was about to happen. I was more appalled by the fact that he changed our Facebook status so then I had to address that drama amidst preparing. People still say, "He could've waited a week!" However, I wouldn't have wanted him to fake it. He had been thinking about doing it for about a week. He could've done it a day earlier was what I thought.
As great as love, and even intense like, is, you can find yourself in a rut. You're not 100% happy but you don't want to break up around the holidays. You're miserable but you've been together for so long. You really want to tell her that thing x bothers you every time, but you don't want to hurt her feelings and instead sink down yourself (the disastrous communication rut). Consideration can become masochism. Looking for "the right time" leaves us still looking as we stomp our feet in frustration.
Ruts are not necessarily apocalyptic to a relationship. Given you have a partner that is ready to work with you and not quit because it was too hard (We're talking after the first month.), a couple can climb back up and have a bit more strength at the tail end of the matter. Show off those muscles successful couples (and use your words)!
So...
Happy holidays!
Happy Wailing Wednesday!
I'm not waiting until St. Patrick's Day.
Jamie Cullum released Momentum this summer. He has been an artist that has added meaning and comfort to my listening experience.
I chose this song because it is

The last point is relevant because I was talking with a friend yesterday. She was into the comfort level of sad songs, and I recommended she needed to switch things up, if even by one song. I need to switch things up from time to time, so that's what I'm doing. You'll understand more about this choice tomorrow.
Happy Wailing Wednesday from a wannabe master of suspense.
Break ups happen on various levels. The Civil Wars are getting ready to release an album that they wrote after canceling tour dates due to rising tensions. Reportedly, Joy and John Paul are not speaking. Now, The Civil Wars is not the first band to write amidst dramatic tensions (see the story behind Rumours and other similar tales) but nevertheless, the songs on the record are noted as speaking to this break-up.
Here is the second single that talks about those lonely feelings that settle in when something needs to see an end as well as underlying anger (e.g. "It's not your right.")
To quote John Paul, "Are you sad yet?"
Welcome to the Misheard Lyrics Edition of Wailing Wednesday!
I have been a fan of this song since I heard it on the Paste Valentine's Day Sampler. However, up until last night, I heard the line "take the weakest thing in you and beat the b***ards with it" as something different on each listen. Nevertheless, I decided this was the jaded lovers anthem; build that wall to protect yourself.
That's what I thought until I looked at the lyrics to confirm what I had been misunderstanding. Yep, I confirmed my brain was confuddled in terms of that line, but I also became confuddled in terms of what this song was all about. Here are the lyrics:
There's been a lot of talk of love But that don't amount to nothing You can evoke the stars above But that doesn't make it something And the only way to last And the only way to live it Is to hold on when you get love, And let go when you give it... give it. It's a pretty melody It might help you through the night time But it doesn't make it easy To leave the party at the right time If I'm frightened, if I'm high It's my weakness. please forgive it At least I hold on when I get love, And I let go when I give it... give it... give it What do I do when I get lonely? What do I do? Hold on when you get love, What do I do when I get lonely? What do I do? Hold on when you get love, What do I do when I get lonely? What do I do? Let go when you give it. What do I do? The world wont listen to this song And the radio wont play it But if you like it sing along Sing 'cause you don't know how to say it Take the weakest thing in you And then beat the bastards with it And always hold on when you get love, So you can let go when you give it. Take the weakest thing in you And then beat the bastards with it And always hold on when you get love, So you can let go when you give it. What do I do when I get lonely? What do I do? Hold on when you get love What do I do when I get lonely? What do I do? Let go when you give it. What do I do? What do I do when I get lonely? What do I do? Hold on when you get love What do I do? I know it's true, at least I think I do Nothing that you say or do will make you love me Forget the song, life will go on I keep sayin' it from the dark, nothing above me I know it's true, at least I think I do Nothing that you say or do will make you love me Forget the song, life will go on I keep sayin' it from the dark, nothing above me Take the weakest thing in you And then beat the bastards with it And always hold on when you get love, So you can let go when you give it. Give it.. give it.. give it.. give it.. give it.. give it.
So what do you think?
I found a possible suggestion for the chorus which means this, in fact, is not the jaded lover's anthem but an anthem suggesting a good way to love as one moves past hurt:
"Letting go of love when you give it = you don't expect anything in return. Hold on when you get love = receive the gift and let it make you a bigger person You have to be complete / confident / self-assured enough (by receiving love) in order to be able to give love without needing anything in return. Both sound easy, but they're hard in real life."
I think I need this person to write a post or five.
