Today I visited Wakehurst botanical garden in Sussex, the wilder twin sister of my beloved Kew Gardens. They currently have some Henry Moore sculptures on show in the park, and the flowers and trees were gorgeous too.

By this stream side the new fronds of Osmunda regalis (royal fern, flowering fern) were uncurling. This fern is native to Europe, Africa and Asia growing in damp conditions and forming a large clump of bipinnate fronds with separate fertile spore-bearing fronds. The foliage turns an attractive red-brown in autumn.
