In this herbaceous border at Hampton Court Palace, Surrey, the Helenium 'Moerheim Beauty' (sneezeweed) was flowering. This plant has nectar and pollen rich flowers that are popular with insects including bees, butterflies and moths, later there are seeds that attract bird species.

Hakonechloa macra (Japanese forest grass, hakone grass, ornamental grass) forms clumps of elegant arching foliage and grows well in moist, humus-rich soil in cool shade. It works well edging a path, underplanting shrubs or in containers.

The compact, clump-forming perennial Liatris spicata ‘Kobold’ (button snakewort) has narrow, grass-like foliage and these erect spikes of feathery flowers. It is useful for the front of a border and is popular with pollinators.

Primrose Hall Peonies put on a stunning display at the Royal Horticultural Society Hampton Court Flower Show. Paeonia plants can live for decades in a garden and are low maintenance. The Primrose Hall nursery suggested there were 3 rules to planting herbaceous peonies:
* Plant in full sun or part shade in a sheltered position
* A fertile soil that is free draining
* Plant herbaceous peonies with the crown (top of the root) no more than 5cm below the ground. With container grown plants, place them at the same level they are in the pot.

In summer Lythrum virgatum 'Dropmore Purple’ (wand loosestrife) has purple flower spikes which are popular with pollinators. However, in winter the brown erect stems of this clump-forming perennial still provide a display and shelter for insects. This plant thrives in moist soil in either sun or partial shade.

It seemed that these Persicaria bistorta 'Superba' (common bistort, red bistort) flowers were all perfect the day I saw them and were humming with the local bee population. This is a vigorous clump-forming herbaceous perennial that will grow in sun or semi shade.
