Can’t believe I’ve haven’t put this here yet, it’s been months since I finished it. I guess I forgot this blog was for any classic lit and not just Verne novels whoops.
Walter Hartright and Laura Fairlie/the Woman in White from The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins. I picked up this book from a small used bookstore on an island off the coast of my state (back in May I believe), and I’m really glad I did so. Apparently it’s one of the first true mystery novels and is pretty popular, and has inspired much of the future literature in the mystery genre. I had previously never heard of it but I read it and loved it. I loved the character of Marian, and Mr Hartright is such a sweet guy. Definitely recommend.
Oh also there’s a recent BBC miniseries adaptation of it that is pretty well done.

When you didn't have to take a distance from your friends: Ivan's Professor Pesca with his young friend Walter in 'The Woman in White' (2018). 😊👑🌟 Can't wait to hear what filming was like the first time under pandemic conditions! Happy Wayback Wednesday! 😊 . posted on Instagram - https://instagr.am/p/CGm7Y1Qnwhb/
«There, in the middle of the broad bright high-road—there, as if it had that moment sprung out of the earth or dropped from the heaven—stood the figure of a solitary Woman, dressed from head to foot in white garments, her face bent in grave inquiry on mine, her hand pointing to the dark cloud over London, as I faced her.» (from The First Epoch, "The Story Begun by Walter Hartright [of Clement’s Inn, Teacher of Drawing]", IV) ~ «“Resignation is sublime—adopt it. The modest repose of home is eternally fresh—enjoy it. The storms of life pass harmless over the valley of Seclusion—dwell, dear lady, in the valley.”» (The Third Epoch, "The Story Continued by Walter Hartright", IV) ~ #Finished: The Woman in White by #WilkieCollins My rating: 10/10 ~ I knew The Woman in White was a popular novel in its own age, though initially criticized by some critics, as now I see that it is full of unusual techniques and shocking events British novel hasn't even seen before, and the best-known work of Collins. It is one of the earliest examples of mystery novel, and also belongs to a genre called "sensation novel". However, I think this novel is underrated today, I believe that it should be as popular as novels like Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights and Great Expectations, since it has everything they have: a well-structured plot (definitely not an ordinary one), a great love story, gothic elements, retributions, iconic characters, conspirators. It has more: a complex plot, intentional misdirections, twists and turns, action, which I can say that it has some of the most shocking and exciting moments I've ever read. It was definitely an amazing experience and I will miss the characters, especially Marian Halcombe, Count Fosco, Walter Hartright and Laura Fairlie, who felt as if they were real. ~ «My hour for tea is half-past five, and my buttered toast waits for nobody.» (The Third Epoch, The Story continued by Mrs. Catherick) ~ #TheWomanInWhite #WomanInWhite #WalterHartright #MarianHalcombe #SirPercivalGlyde #LauraFairlie #FrederickFairlie #CountFosco #AnneCatherick #ProfessorPesca #sensationnovel #victoriannovel #book #books #bookstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/Bx5OYCkAJ49/?igshid=1te2znqcon583
«This is the story of what a Woman’s patience can endure, and what a Man’s resolution can achieve.» (from the First Epoch, "The Story Begun by Walter Hartright [of Clement’s Inn, Teacher of Drawing]", I) ~ «Our words are giants when they do us an injury, and dwarfs when they do us a service.» (from the First Epoch, "The Story Begun by Walter Hartright [of Clement’s Inn, Teacher of Drawing]", IX) ~ #CurrentlyReading: The Woman in White by #WilkieCollins. And I am loving it... It is so mysterious and gripping! The novel belongs to a subgenre called sensation novel, which was popular in the Victorian era. And it's sensational indeed, partly gothic yet strikingly realistic. It reflects the Victorian era and manners greatly. The fact that the events are narrated from various points of view with each new main chapter is amazing, and it creates a great example of heteroglossia and dialogism, co-existence of multiple voices. The novel proves Collins was a great observer and depicter of human character, as well as English landscapes. The characterizations are incredibly interesting, I found them as remarkable as Dickensian characters. There are many unforgettable characters such as Miss Marian Halcombe, who "has the foresight and the resolution of a man"; the honorable drawing teacher Walter Hartright; annoying hypocondriac Mr. Frederick Fairlie; and most importantly, Count Fosco who outshines them all, even the iconic Woman in White in my opinion. The Count is one of the top three most interesting characters I've ever read, he is salient, funny yet sly, and mysterious. ~ «“... What is the trifling mortification of my pride compared to the dreadful sacrifice of your happiness?”» (from The Second Epoch, "The Story Continued by Marian Halcombe", IV) ~ #TheWomanInWhite #WomanInWhite #WalterHartright #MarianHalcombe #SirPercivalGlyde #LauraFairlie #FrederickFairlie #CountFosco #AnneCatherick #sensationnovel #englishnovel #victoriannovel #book #books #bookstagram #bibliophile #novel #currentread #reading #read #instabook #literature #bookclub #bookworm #booktube #bookaddict #classics #oxfordworldsclassics https://www.instagram.com/p/Bxeq6BcAciJ/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=lznqatv4zrxw
