"It’s like this, when he gets quiet, that Matt starts to worry. “One of Tony’s guys?” he asks again to confirm. The nod is all he needs, and Mello doesn’t ask for any more information. Instead, he storms into his room and comes back with a baggie of their supply.
And his toolkit."

@wammyweek
L followed closely behind Watari as they exited the plane. As they walked by the flight attend, she gave him a bright smile as she repeated the same line told to the other passengers when they exited.
“Welcome to New York! Enjoy your stay.”
This was the first time he had been to New York, but not the first time he’d been to America. His father brought him to Tampa, Florida once before on a business trip when he was 6. Even though it was only 3 years ago, it seemed like a distant memory, a memory he can only recall if he allowed himself to fall down the pit of his mind to reach it, and if he did, he doesn’t know if he will come back.
He was pulled out of his own mind by a small pat against his shoulder by Watari.
“Are you doing okay, L?”
L gave a small nod and took his hand as they walked through the airport. The airport was crowded with people, and all L wanted to do was escape. Watari was fully aware of L’s feelings of crowds and quickly lead the way to the Baggage claim and then to the car he arranged to be there.
It took about an hour to arrive at the hotel. L hopped out of the car and shivered at the brisk air. He didn’t notice the cold when they left the airport. It was still only the last week of October, but winter was already showing its face here. He quickened his pace to the warmth of the hotel lobby.
When they finally got to the room they would be staying at, L quickly grabbed his bag and took out some sweets he sneaked in there. Watari smiled kindly at him and stared to pick up the clothes L threw to the side.
“Hey L, Do you know what tomorrow is?”
“Monday, October 31st, 1988. Why?”
“Yes, October 31st. Which is a very special day.”
L frowned when Watari repeated the day. He was aware that tomorrow was his birthday, but he hasn’t celebrated his birth for years, not after his parent’s death. He had only been in Watari’s care for 8 months, he didn’t expect him to even know about his Birthday.
Watari watched the change of L’s expression and sighed. L was a very troubled child, and he understood some things that were special for other kids, L was not as excited for. But he sat down next to him and gave him a sweet smile.
“Tomorrow is Halloween. Do you know what that is?”
L tilted his head at Watari, bringing his thumb to his lip, a common tell showing when L was thinking hard about something.
“Halloween? No I don’t.”
“Halloween isn’t really celebrated much in England. But here in America, there is a tradition many children take part in.”
L was now interested, bringing his knees to his chest as Watari continued with his explanation.
“Children will dress up in all different sorts of costumes, and in the evening, they will go door to door and-“
L cuts him off. “Get abducted? That seems like a very easy way to get kidnapped.”
Watari pauses for a moment before chuckling.
“There will be adult’s to watch over them, but as I was saying, they go door to door and say ‘Trick or Treat’. And the residence will give all the kids candy.”
L’s eyes widened at the mention of candy. “Really?! They just give out candy?”
Watari nods. “Yep! So what do you say? Would you like to participate?”
L looks down at the sweets he has in his bag for a moment, before deciding.
“Yes, please.”

The next morning, Watari brought L to a local Halloween shop to get his costume. Since it was the day of Halloween there wasn’t much of a selection left.
Between a red crayon, a wizard and a pumpkin; L chose a pumpkin. Mostly because when he wore it, he could crouch down and still be comfortable.
Watari was glad to see how excited L seemed to be as the day went by. He was asked multiple times when they can start trick or treating. It was good to see L act, well, childish.
Finally Watari told him to put on his costume. L took no time at all to throw the pumpkin costume over his normal white baggy shirt and jeans.
Watari led L to a neighborhood, already filled with kids knocking on doors. L stayed close to Watari as they walked to the first house.
“It’s okay L. Go ahead and knock.”
L frowned and slowly approached the door and gave a soft knock, before running back to Watari’s side.
Watari crouched down to his level as they heard footsteps approach the door.
“When they open the door, say ‘Trick or Treat’, okay?”
L nods and as the door opens, he shyly repeated the words to the couple.
The couple smiles sweetly at him, reaching in a huge bowl of candy that L was eyeing and gaves him a few pieces.
L grins at the sweets and was about to run off but Watari gave him a look and he quickly remembered what he was told to say earlier that day.
“Thank you very much.”
The rest of the night L was led house to house, receiving more sweets.
Watari was pleased to see the boy who almost never smiled, grinning from ear to ear.
Eventually they walked back to the hotel and L surrounded himself with piles of candy from his adventure.
“Watari, Look how many sweets I got!”
“I see. Oh, it looks like your missing one though.”
L looked up at Watari, only to see a cupcake with a candle being lowered to his height by Watari.
“Happy Birthday, L.”
L looked at the cupcake with wide excited eyes before closing them to make a wish. After a few seconds, he blew the candle out.
“So what did you wish f-.”
Watari was cut off by L hugging him, an action the boy never had done willingly before.
“I wished for everyday birthday to be like this one!”

For @wammyweek [Secret crush and/or Secrets]
Beyond always knew when L was planning to visit Wammy’s House because a padlock would appear on the second refrigerator in the kitchen (not that the kids were supposed to be rummaging in either of them). A day or so later, a green Aston Martin would roll up the long, oak-lined driveway in the dead of night, headlights off and practically invisible. Not to Beyond, though; his strange eyes had always seen more than others could, even when he didn’t want to see it. Names and distant things; an antique car in the darkness or the date someone will die.
