#3269 - Eucalyptus wandoo - Wandoo

AKA dooto, warrnt, wornt and white gum.

First described in 1934 by the Australian botanist William Faris Blakely in his book A Key to the Eucalypts.

Jarrah forest dominate where the rain gets up to 600ml a year - where it tends to be drier (and they haven't been cut down yet) you get Wandoo forest. It's also moderately salt tolerant. They don't grow as tall as the Jarrah, rarely exceeding 30m. Ages seem comparable, however.

One of Australia's hardest timbers, and formerly felled in huge quantities for railway sleepers and other uses. Any remaining Wandoo forests are in protected catchments and reserves. The Noongar peoples used steamed Wandoo leaves and poultices to relieve congestion. The dried gum was ground up as an ointment. Additionally, the outer parts of the roots are juicy and sweet and the flowers soaked in water to produce a sweet drink.

Resistant to the Phytophthora cinnamomi dieback, but highly susceptible to root rot caused by the Armillaria luteobubalina fungus.

A magnificent Menzies' Banksia or Bulgalla, also known as Firewood Banksia, grows to 10m tall. The delicious nectar attracts an array of animals and birds and the Beeloo Whadjug Noongar people also used it in sweet drinks.
